Gonna be fun, either way...

Was nervous about having gone in with three spinners (& Root) but turn inside first hour is encouraging...
|

Good start by England.
I have to say I am a little disappointed we left a man behind. That was wrong. God bless Jon Arlott! |

Hi Apt

Morning, WD.
Good session. Pope looked extremely skittish but Duckett and these two have batted well... A couple have turned square and kept low already. Interesting to see if it flattens our or, more likely, continues on a spinny trajectory. |
By:
I like Duckett, we've found an opener.
|
By:
Can't play that, corking delivery.
|
By:
Yes tough to call these pitches. Shirley can’t flatten out. This is regarded as a good batting ground.
|
By:
Under 247.5
Pleased with that wicket. I think the sweep shot is the right way to play. The extra bounce is obviously a problem. I prefer black soil pitches to red clay |
By:
Bumrah bowling spin now
|
By:
Stokes gotta go with two left. One of his wonder half-hours could be invaluable on this deck.
|
By:
Who knows how our young spinners settle but feels like we're well in the game if we give up fewer than 30-40 on first innings
|

Hand-picked total, WD

Mission keep-them-as-many-under-300-as-possible.
How Hartley - with his height and bounce - does on debut is key. If they take to him or Rehan, we're down to 2/3 bowlers |

Well, joins a presumably small club of having first delivery in Test cricket smoked over the boundary. |
By:
Trying not to over-react but this is going about as badly as it could be.
Shades of Simon Kerrigan so far |
By:
bit harsh asking him to bowl with the brand new ball up front (presumably he said he was fine with it...but he would)..
|
By:
246 probably not so far under a competitive score given the conditions but a massive ask of this attack to defend it...Ashwin, Jadeja, Axar all proven class in these conditions...we have Leachy a solid but limited spinner, Hartley on debut and Ahmed playing his 2nd test...
considering Root's efforts on the last tour with the ball I think I'd have preferred another seam option especially as Wood can only bowl in shortish spells but Anderson not an easy selection on the back of his ashes series and Robinson bowling his 2nd and third spells at 75 mph may not have been such a great option.. |
By:
Yep difficult task for England. Thought they did quite well. The bowling was always going to be the issue and unfortunately we are going to come up short.
One would hope our young players can gain invaluable experience from this tour particularly young Ahmed and they embrace the challenge facing them. I fell asleep …….. under 247.5…… never in doubt |
By:
Anderson would not have gone for 63 in 7 overs.
Hope Pope can get his act together. 1/10 India now. Listened in on talk sport, Gough, Harmison and KP did ok. |
By:
Hartley takes first Test Wicket.
India 167/3. |
By:
Hartley should not be playing Test Cricket imho. Ahmed has something but needs to refine his craft. Root is decent, Leach should stop under cutting and try and get some bounce.
This is a fools errand for Engerland. Such a shame Brook went home. Ahmed’s younger brother bowls off spin. Good! |
By:
Dreadful from Iyer
I am a big fan of his but am not sure Test Cricket is his forum. It could be but plenty of others deserve a chance. Rehab Ahmed has something but should not be playing Test Cricket yet. I hope he learns this winter, huge talent. |

Can't decide if our spinners essentially bowl seam-up or whether the pitch is more docile now, albeit with a little up n down.
Been a slog today. Always the way after a second successive 3:30am start at beginning of series. Could've done with fireworks. Anyway, worry for our chances of avoiding a shellacking in this series. On this evidence, we don't have even one effective bowler for these conditions. I hoped our batting (approach) could even things up if they prepared minefields but if India didn't know before this... ...England's only hope of taking twenty wickets is a fiery pitch so they'll be minded to serve up nothingness and we could be out of each game before it begins. |
By:
plenty there when it's been in the right areas..Root pick of the spinners to this point would be the issue I suspect..
|
By:
Ashwin did say there was moisture in the pitch early on. Commentators do not get it or explain how the pitch is changing. It looked far more docile today but Indian spinners and coaches have said our lads have serious issues with their grip and seam. I don’t get it. These are supposed to be the best professionals we have. Something not right.
Tbf Induan spinners are extra special. Not England’s fault the cupboard is bare. |
By:
India 1/25.
A few wickets chucked away as well. 5-0 on the cards. |
By:
Leach carrying an injury now apparently...hardly surprising as first 'first class' game he'd played since June..
prep not been great again...obvs has to be limited these days but surely a couple of 2 day warm up matches (max overs batting) in India would have made a bit more sense than rocking up from the UAE - pitches there generally aren't very similar to India even apart from being on the slow side.. |
By:
*sounds a though the Leach issue was an impact injury to be fair (bumped his knee) but still think a lot being asked of some of these..
|
By:
Boy, this will be difficult for our guys.
A bucketload of skidders and our sweeping will not marry well. Using the feet imperative now. Expecting a lie-in tomorrow... |
By:
What do I know? Never seen two openers look more comfortable
Not even a hoick in sight, just guiding it where they want like peak-Lara. |

By:
So reliable.
|
By:
The last time a visiting team scored 40+ opening stands in both innings of a Test in India was Alastair Cook & Haseeb Hameed in Rajkot in Nov 2016.
certainly managed to effect the bowlers with their positivity... |
By:
should credit cricbuzz.com for that.
|
By:
It's just brilliant to watch England.
I'll repeat what I said the other day, we have also found an opener at last |
By:
Yes, we're extremely likely to lose.
Indian spinners are *so* many leagues better than ours that it is barely quantifiable but we have what we have and for me at least, our approach to batting absolutely maximises our chances. We should not have a hope of a match in this series, yet I would not be surprised (nay, I may even expect it) to see us trading odds on somewhere. |
By:
Another forty minutes and we have a market
|
By:
Harmison think this wicket would get docked 15 points in England……. How many did India score?
Goes to show some people talk absolute sheite at times although he is trying to cover himself now. |
