I'm with you Slippy, no matter what Aus say I'd expect there to be a drop off in intensity at the end of a tough tour, England have a point to prove etc. Could be some PTSD too for their bowlers after going round the park last time. Surprised to see them shorten this morning on no obvious news unless I missed some.

Oz finally win toss and get to bowl in favourable conditions...lot of overnight rain and plenty of cloud around so might do a bit in the first session though pitch looks a decent surface...
|
By:
Yes Brentford, it's completely overcast but the sun is trying to burst through and it's quite warm, I'd say about 21C so it could be a very tricky morning for us in store.
|
By:
you a Surrey fan, Slippy ?
|
By:
England shortening despite toss loss...
|
By:
Yes, Surrey man all my life and seen many of the greats at the Oval since late 70's onwards.
Roger Knight, former Surrey captain and President of the M.C.C. for awhile was my French teacher at school! |
By:
The draw pushed out to 5.4 in light of the conditions.
|
By:
yep, had some players there..
looking good for you in the Championship... |
By:
I fancy Starc on this

Blimey, that was close

looks a decent toss to lose so far ...Oval drainage playing it's part I guess but not done much at all to this point...
|
By:
True do not want to be batting last but lacquer is coming off now
|
By:
england batsmen back to normal
|
By:
Big turnaround as the ball ages.
|
By:
leg side strangle, leading edge and a chop on...no need for conventional wicket taking this morning...
Duckett unlucky really...other two less so...way too close for the shot (Root) and always a possibility of leading edges when you work to leg as much as Zak tends to... another drop from Oz..could catch us up at this rate... Carey not quite as polished as he was... |
By:
I have been a little surprised with the England price this morning. I also got to lay under 421.5 and under 391.5. England layed at 2.2 hoping to lay Aus at well under odds on.
|
By:
All very well to get off to a flying start but their job is to bat 20 overs, maybe 30 on the first day in these conditions. We are 3 down and still half an hour to lunch with our best batsman in the hutch and second best just been dropped and looking vulnerable.
|
By:
Ali has hardly laid a bat on ball for the last 2 overs while Brook is living very dangerously. Either the wicket is harder than it looks or England are batting really poorly.
|
By:
Brook's game is not currently suited to playing the moving ball. The conditions are making the pitch a little tricky. Can't see Brook lasting long. On the plus side Anderson finally get a pitch to bowl on. Clouds over next 5 days too. Going to be easier to bat tomorrow as long as clouds don't give too much help to our bowlers. If England get around 300 I think they will be very much in the game still. Not sure I can call this but will be laying under evens as I think fortunes will swing as well as the ball.

Nothing to do with this final Test but...
Saud Shakeel has had an obscene start to his Test career. Tiny sample but one ton, one double, yet to be dismissed for less than 20 and averaging in the 80s. |

I don't know if the commentators have mentioned it but it is extremely humid a.t.m.
I've got the windows open and it's very muggy. England now as low as 2.16 which I have to say looks short enough. |
By:
Ali so close to an edge there, fraction out.
|
By:
Definitely humid, will swing particularly later in the day imho even with an older ball.

I have no words for some of these shots from Brook!
He can only get better too! |
By:
What a session!
|
By:
It was a very entertaining and interesting session, one of Brook's 6's was outrageous.

By:
The sun is trying to burst through and 30 - 40% chance of light showers mid afternoon.
The draw pushed out to 5.8 now, that's looking increasingly unlikely you'd have to think. |
By:
humidity around 80%, 68F
Brook looking like the key wicket despite what I said about him earlier. Don't think Aus have bowled well save Cummins spell. I think if England get above 350 they will go on to win the game. |
By:
Done his groin and looks in trouble. Lucky that Root is an effective bowler and this pitch will help him.

19 from the over, jobsagoodun.

Odd shot, 6, after 11 off 38.
Great game. |

looks in trouble

I'm with Butch, he should retire hurt for now.
He can always come back, granted without his eye in, and hit out later if he must. However, England scored 50+ 'run' runs in the first session. We do not want Brook having to alter his game to accommodate newly forced lack of rotation. All of the focus is on the boundary count with England these days but arguably our greatest point of difference/advantage over Australia this series has been running between wickets/rotation... |
By:
Maybe Ali should come off, his injury appears to be quite bad.
