I think Holding has a point. I would not want to give the ball up on this certainly on the first morning with fresh grass!
But yeah. I'd like to see England score 3 singles an over off Lyon. Try and milk him out of the attack and put the mileage on the Aussie bowlers this series. They basically have the 3 main men. Lyon is kwality true but they batter the batting side first. Take away that freshness. Work them overs 30-80. |

His nick of a wide one through the slip cordon whilst his entire body was still a foot outside leg stump may be the worst shot I have ever seen from a Test batsmen
I might suggest you watch the first ball of the match ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() That was an awful looking shot though! |
By:
Good!
But Labuschagne is a tough South African! I think they are going to have to hit Lyon square. |
By:
This kid made a good start to his test career but didn't take a wicket. Bowls fast enough though.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I thought he nicked it! |
By:
looking quite good these two..ball losing it's hardness..gotta get around 250 though to stay in it you'd think...
|
By:
Green isn't good enough for me as yet and Mitch Marsh should feel aggrieved.
Reminds me of a very young Flintoff when Flinotff wasn't anywhere near good enough to warrant a place in England's Test team. |
By:
a bit of an investment isn't it rob - agree he's not really good enough yet but Marsh largely proven not test class especially with bat which was the bigger requirement in the Oz side..
|
By:
Yep. Think that's spot on Brentford. Far more potential (particularly the extra pace with the ball) but if I were asked to pick an all rounder to help win this Test match today I'd pick Marsh.

Well done England!
We haven't lost The Ashes yet! Agreed about Green but they need a 6 so he plays. But that is where Engerland need to counter attack. Him and Lyon. Make the Aussie trio bowl! They need to look at how to score against Lyon. They should have had plans for this but you wonder if they do! |
By:
Hameed has played a blinder (the wild swipe aside) and Pope looks very comfortable against their pace, much less so v Lyon. Australia have been impeccable.
Above 200 and don't think we're dead but much will rest on how well we shackle Smith and Labuschagne (here and entire series), the rest could just as easily fold as come off. |
By:
Agree we can't allow Lyon to bowl one end for 30 overs a day.
|
By:
Yep
If they bat day 2 and 3 we could be looking at them scoring 450 on this deck. Just have to hope the overheads maintain. Really cannot see Engerland escaping from this without rain. 250 would represent a great recovery but 200 odd behind starting day 4 is not a good position to be in. Of course the Aussie batting is not great but this is their home. They have a great 3 and 4. |

I've gone for a Chianti btw!
Fine beans, asparagus fried in butter, chesnut mushrooms and peppers with chunky chips! |
By:
I'm quite impressed WD

Just as the sun has come out and he had the hard work done. I don't rate Butler at this level but if they think he is going to come out and play his shots they are mistaken! 250 is looking a long way off right now. I would take it! |
By:
We’ll struggle to make 300 all series so we need to bribe the groundsman for wicket fests
|
By:
Buttler to channel his Gilchrist
|
By:
Wood is at least quick and offers something similar to Cummins
|
By:
Butler certainly not short of confidence!
I prefer this from England. Not wild batting, just positive. Should bring the best out of Pope too. Our new Sherminator! |
By:
The pitch has certainly not been a Headingly green top!

Graham: "Getting flashbacks when the India middle order tore us apart at the Gabba...not good"
|
By:
I like Shane Warne and Kerry O'Keefe. I think Isha Guha is ok too!
|
By:
and that is why I like Shane Warne! Well said.
|
By:
I am not sure 250 is still in the game. I think it is not losing inside 3 and a half days....hopefully at least!
|
By:
shot son!
and I am not his biggest fan but the boi has talent let it not be said he doesn't! |
By:
and I am green!
Should really cash out and call it quits but I cannot help myself! |
By:
classy shot through extra from the Butler... beginning to look a pretty good deck for batting which is a bit of a mixed blessing with this score ...
|
By:
This is ashley a great batting wicket despite what Engerland have shown us!
|
By:
This is quite slow for The Gabba!
|
By:
quicker day 2 and 3 innit if the sun stays out...don't often see as much green tinge there as this morning..
|
By:
done well to dodge some of the heavy stuff weather wise so far...
|
By:
Its not exactly zipping around. Even this morning. Sure we lost wickets but it was more about us than them! Could still be a good toss to win except for we lost 5 wickets for nix!
Oh FFS I just gone and done it again! |
By:
Back in the red!
|
By:
The way this is going it is not going to be a draw despite the weather threat!
|
By:
I don't think the Aussie batsmen are going to nick off against anything going over stump height!
|
By:
Pope needs to learn to find the gaps!
|
By:
Oh FFS!
That was shocking from Pope! |
By:
Just when you think Englerland should exploit the situation!
|
By:
Pope doing what Pope does..
|
By:
Aussie have also been very lucky today. Everything has gone their way. Englerland cannot be this bad for the whole series!
