Still opening the bowling for Kent, 20 wickets in 4 matches including 2 five-fors and contributes with the bat with middle order runs. Just earned another one year contract extension, a tribute to his fitness and ability. Has to be one of the best county cricketers of all time.

Totally agree.
A few late 30 somethings carry on for the T20 cash, and batsmen like Gooch and Close can play in their 40s ,
but to still be playing 4 day cricket at 44 as a competitive all rounder is phenomenal.

doing very well to be still taking wickets regularly in his mid 40s but really doesn't say much for the standard of batting in the championship. been a few very one sided games with div 1 heavyweights up against some of the weaker div 2 sides in the last month

He's actually some way short of being the oldest bowler to take five in an innings in the Championship: Warwickshire's Willie Quaife claimed three in 1926, when he was 54 years old. The oldest to take a five-for in any first-class match was William Lillywhite, who was 58 when he took six for Over-36 against Under-36 at Lord's in 1850.

I think the last 50-year-old to take five wickets in a Championship innings was Tom Goddard, the Gloucestershire offspinner, who did it three times in 1952 at the age of 51.

used to be a couple of aul lads that played Sunday League 40 over matches in the late 80s, always spinners

Flat Jack Simmons for Lancashire
Norman Gifford - was it Warwickshire?

Had to be hidden in the field and couldn't bat for toffee

but bowled their overs economically

Top innings from Miguel Cummins it has to be said. Batted for two hours, faced 61 balls and scored 1 run in the stand with Stevens. The stand produced 166 runs in 28.1 overs. Magnificent effort from Cummins. Shame Darren let him down and hit out before Cummins could reach his centuryWink

Cupwinkcook : Jack Simmons was a half decent bat down the order. He scored over nine thousand runs in first class cricket at 22.52 and also averaged 18.19 in one day cricket. Agreed he was a liability in the field although I seem to remember he wasn't a bad slip. Played until he was 48.

Norman Gifford, Fred Titmus. Easier for spinners. There is no reason why a man of 45 should not play first class cricket. it is not boxing. What he loses in reflex and athleticism he makes up for with muscle memory and experience. It is quite extraordinary though to want it so much at that age.
