1.  If you cant score from a ball , leave it alone .

2.  Unless a ball is heading for stumps , no need to defend it .

3.  Score off the bad balls .

4.  Don't "fish " outside off stump .

5.  Where possible hit the ball down , not up .

Sure there are others , all additions welcome .

I see guys getting out all the time to balls which are not going to hit the stumps .

Bradman hit only 6 sixes in a 20 year plus stellar test career , the modern obsession with sixes may be partly due to batsmen growing up playing T20 and one day stuff.

Tests are different , but batsmen in particular do not seem to be able to adjust to "staying in " .  South Africa at present are just throwing away their wickets for example .  Little wonder that some average bowlers have figures better than they deserve .

They don't have the patience, the desire or the moxy most of the time..

Obviously the short game and the money are at play.

Kelly, i don't see the connection with betting rules, two separate entities.

The punter can control one but not the other.

However i see where you are coming from, it's been discussed often on test threads..

Just have to look at one West Indian 6 hitting lower order bat who cost myself and others quite few quid..

You most probably know what i refer to.

7. Ignore these if I'm backing against you.
8. If you're not good enough you shouldn't be playing (should be Rule 1)

I think we have to assume the thread was supposed to be called "Simple Test match batting rules."

Yes VV that surely must be it.

It had struck me that Kelly would not be confusing or ambiguous but not what you point out, which for my part is a little concerning Grin
