Eng are once again well skinny relying on a useful stand here primarily..in fact imho the price they are now is reflecting a forward position of about 30 runs and then expecting contributions from others

Their batsmen have failed them. SImple as that. You can't win tests when you can't even bat out a day!

It comes from the skipper. He talks of being bold, aggressive and positive. No appreciation of the history of the game, conditions and what is required in different situations. Root is a one size fits all captain.

Bayliss is a bystander. I doubt he has any influence at all.

So it was Moeen that was holding the draw price down to sub 50.

I'd get Bell on board, not to play obviously, they discarded him too early for course.

My dad always used to say, if your top 6 aren't doing the job, an extra batsman won't help. That is probably in today's cricket not as true as it used to be, but this England side is a perfect example. Bat till 10 but can't survive a whole day's play!

Of the top 6 the only batting spot nailed down is the captains at number 4, the openers are on trial as no one knows if they are good enough, Johnny is batting at 3 because there isn't anyone else and he should be at 5 or 6, the whole batting line up and mentality is a total mess

If anything, this is generous to the England batting line up:

Burns - I’d stick with him for now but overall he’s been rubbish
Denly - joke pick to tour SL because he bowls some leg spin, inexplicably retained for this tour, not a test batsman in a million years, let alone as opener
Bairstow - agree with you
Root - class, I get he’s not scored runs this tour but anyone can get a few very decent balls in a row
Buttler - I remain unconvinced, as although he’s actually been pretty decent since recall, could easily regress to his mean
Stokes - not actually very good. I know this is a bit heretical but his batting has been outright bad for a while and his overall record is not that of a test number 6
Ali - okay at 7
Foakes - early days. One of our better players, probably
Curran - err, a very good number 9, good number 8, not a very good bowler
Broad - doesn’t bat any more. Should be best test number 10 ever
Anderson - a number 11

seems incredible to think i might actually have seen england play better than this in that absolute shambles of a performance in bridgetown. feel sorry for the poor sods who had to endure both. for some of them may be a once in a lifetime experience

WI played better than anyone expected this series, I think. Credit to them but obviously England’s batting has been awful. But then it is pretty awful.

easier to recover from 50 for 3 at home and 300 in england certainly in recent years is a match winning score. still expect to demolish australia in the summer. england are formidable at home despite the odd lapse and australia's batting is much worse than england's certainly away from home like most sides

you couldn't have got that more wrong!

I didn't see Foakes get out in second innings but from  what I've seen so far he has a good a technique against the quicks as any one and better than most.
stick with Burns for a bit, Denley- not good enough, Bairstow a must but out of position, Root- as someone said is class but looks like a rabbit in headlamps , Buttler -show pony one day slogger, Moen-mod bowler, gets a score every 12 innings,(bit like scenario with I Bell),Sam Curran- send him home, Stokes - disagree with earlier opinions, is a must for me, . That's quite harsh. He showed a few tests ago, don't know which, where he scored a hundred under pressure. I do rate him slightly above your rating since then.

buttler has scored the most runs since he got back in the team. root's not been in the best form of late

They need to go back to basics with a balanced team at the very least the top 5 specialist batsmen and 3 specialist bowlers at 9,10,11 with 6,7 and 8 being all rounders no 6 batting/bowling like Stokes/ Woakes  no 7 wicketkeeper/batsman choice of 3 and finally no 8 spin bowler/batsman currently Moeen as we are unlikely to require 2 spinners for quite a while then Roots cavalier attitude needs drastic moderation to play the conditions and not we play attacking cricket whatever.

That’s largely the side we’re playing, apart from the fact that we are approaching batting stupidly aggressively. Bairstow and Buttler are playing as batsmen in the top 5 and probably justifiably, even though both would be better suited to lower down the order. Currans is the only one not following that pattern and I’d replace him with Woakes, who’s just as good a batsman but is also a better bowler.

Root is trying to redefine test match batting and make it more akin to the 50 over stuff. JB, Root, Stokes, Buttler and Mo all play both formats.

The unwillingness to see the need to adapt styles for test cricket has to change.

apparently bairstow has the worst percentage of bowled dismissals this century. saturday's latest beggared belief. no top order batsman should ever get out like that

Was patient and jumped on Windies above evens. Went 1660 green Windies but always expected a fight back and was also a bit nervous with Windies batting against The Magician and the Enforcer on this wicket.

I think I listened too much or was corrupted by perceived wisdom. Maybe I was right to be cautious. I walked away with 675 which I was not unhappy about tbh. Could have been 4 figures if I had layed back the draw around 10 or 11 but I was greedy.

I think you have to say fair play West Indies and well done. Largely imho Journeymen Internationals, Has been's, could be's and some little talent.

I thought they were well marshalled and had good game plans as I said before and executed.

The batters lost the game again let us be clear. My initial focus is on the bowling. Our 3 seamers without doubt are better than theirs......except of course of the evidence of what we saw.

I had a running row with Slogger I think, about The Enforcer. He did look fantastic and did bowl well but imho handsome is and handsome does.

The batting, where to start? We are at sixes and sevens because we have too many sixes and sevens simples. My solution is to say

Foakes is the best keeper and he bats 7

Stokes is THE all rounder and he bats 6

Bstard must fight with Butler for no. 5

If Root wants to bat 4 let him but the argument for him at 3 is strong.

As a stop gap for The Ashes I might place Bell at 3 if he can show he still has it.

Burns has shown enough to continue.

My other opener would be Roy or Hales again for the summer and eventually give way to Haseeb Hameed. I have said this before, the boy has it! Get Giles back on him and persevere even if it just with the Lions. He is half the answer, the question is when and maybe how!

With regard to the bowling I think Moen at 8

Archer at 9

Woakes, Broad, Curran at 10 ( Leach ).

and the Burnley Lara at 11

Not the best XL in the World but good enough to challenge South Africa or India and Australia

Got back on Eng at 1.90 with £500 not taking 1 or 2 ticks with this one as I reckon Eng are heading shorter, dead rubber Holder out.

WD, Broad could have bowled them out for 150 almost on his own, with competent catching and a bit more luck. Also, Hasib Hameed is a lot more likely to give up cricket in the next couple of years than get back into the England side, in my view. Three tests of decent batting on flat wickets doesn’t outweigh a couple of county seasons of not being nearly good enough for the FC game.

If Hameed has another season like the last one i cannot see Lancs giving him another contract.

I heard that too but I also heard he had his good season with Giles so am just hopeful.

Coulda shoulda woulda. Cummins and Starc bowled a similar length as Broad and kept beating Indian batsmen and the point of that is? Indian bowlers bowled fuller, risked getting driven and won the series.

Okay, I know that you have and that actually you’re fairly sensible on there but your case here would have a lot more to recommend it if Broad has actually bowled too short. He didn’t. His pitch map was mostly good length and lots of the approximately a million times he beat the bat were from full balls, as were the two drops, neither of which were especially difficult. So he’d have taken five wickets just from the catching being adequate, without even needing to postulate that he was very unlucky not to get more edges, although he clearly was.
