Good cricket trivia question on one of the quiz shows today (Tenable)

Can you name the 10 ways in which a batsman can be given out in cricket

No need to post the answers here cause they'r easily googled, just something to get you thinking

Fwiw, got 8 before I had to cheat Cry

They recently changed the rules to amalgamate two forms of dismissal.
Report detraveller December 26, 2018 11:22 PM GMT
I only have nine at the moment.
Report detraveller December 26, 2018 11:24 PM GMT
Ok I had 8 only. Had to google the remaining two.
Report Cauthenmeister December 30, 2018 5:25 PM GMT
I managed nine without looking up the last one. Interesting fact that three players managed to be dismissed in seven of the ten ways in their test careers, another good question.

I got nine but not sure if I made one up. Still thinking.
Report Charlie December 30, 2018 5:57 PM GMT
Think I've got the ten now. I should have wrote them down somewhere!
Report Charlie December 30, 2018 6:07 PM GMT
Wrote them down and got 11 ways.

You made at least one up!

Bowled
Caught
Lbw
Stumped
Run out
Hit wicket
Obstructing the field (includes handled ball now)
Hit ball twice
Timed out

Is all I have. Haven’t touched google. Took me days to remember hit wicket!

I also got 9 without google. I surprised myself. But when I googled I realized two of them were the same which is why I posted that I had 8.

Maybe he has the 'out by backing overs' dismissal noted down as well.

Report Whisperingdeath December 31, 2018 2:55 PM GMT
Wtf!

What is the tenth?
Report Fatslogger December 31, 2018 11:44 PM GMT
You can be retired out too, I think. Bit questionable that one.
Report Charlie January 1, 2019 1:04 PM GMT
As you can tell I didn't Google, these were my 11:

Bowled
Caught
Stumped
Run out
LBW
Hit wicket
Hand ball
Obstruction
Timed out
Dangerous play
Hitting the ball twice

I don't know if dangerous play exists but it should. If not just go around the pitch whacking fielders with your bat.
Report Fatslogger January 1, 2019 8:21 PM GMT
You can’t be out for dangerous play, although you can certainly be fined and banned for it. Not sure what the umps would do in Charlie’s scenario.
Report Whisperingdeath January 2, 2019 4:54 AM GMT
Dangerous Play?!
Report currant bun January 2, 2019 6:05 AM GMT
I got 9 straightaway, and I think that is all there are now, given handling the ball was incorporated into obstructing the field in the recent Law changes

It really did take me days to remember hit wicket. The others were all in readily avaIlable bits of memory.

came up with these and 2 tell you the truth i don't think i've ever seen the other '4' forms of dismissal ever been given out ...not in my experience, anyhow, and i ain't no spring chicken
Report mafeking January 2, 2019 3:46 PM GMT
couple of relatively recent handled the balls i can remember. graham gooch against australia in 1993 flicked the ball away with his hand cos it going near the stumps and michael vaughan more bizarrely picked it up in 2001

think there have been players given for obstructing the field. can't think of any specific examples though
Report johnnythebull January 2, 2019 4:14 PM GMT
'relatively recent'- 1993 and 2001..mafe..compared to early 1900s or before i guess they areGrinWink
Report Fatslogger January 2, 2019 5:17 PM GMT
You old timers! I remember the Vaughan ball handling incident. He’d got about 70, I think and just picked the thing up to throw it back for some reason. Was a bit unsporting to appeal, really but he was out by the letter of the law.
Report currant bun January 2, 2019 5:57 PM GMT
I remember Andrew Hilditch, Ozzie opener , compulsive hooker and I believe an Oz selector later, being given out for handling the ball

And Rameez Raja for obstructing the field

Can't think of any for hitting the ball 2x or timed out - I suspect these are much rather than the other two, at least in modern times
Report detraveller January 2, 2019 9:57 PM GMT
I don't remember the Vaughan handling the ball incident, though I have vague memory of Steve Waugh or some other australian being given out that way in the 2000s? Or maybe not.

I do remember Inzamam's two dismissals. Once where Harmison threw the ball back at him, Inzi jumped a bit, ball hit the stumps and he was given out because his feet were in the air(the law was later adjusted for this). next series, probably against India, the bowler thew the ball back at Inzi, who straight batted it back to the bowler while being out of the crease. Obviously was given out. He said after the press conference 'When I hit the ball I am out when i don't hit the ball i am out. I don't understand'

Mankadding may one day be a mode of dismissal as well, once more teams try to do it and it needs to be brought into law.
Report Fatslogger January 2, 2019 10:20 PM GMT
The Mankad is just a run out, really.

Report donny osmond March 11, 2019 9:11 PM GMT
dangerous play could be obstructing the field if hes attacking fielders ?
