Newlands, and the dramatic backdrop of Table Mountain, is the setting for a Test match with plenty at stake. South Africa must defeat England to draw level, while the visitors are one win away from a memorable series victory.

That's what always gets me mate -- see and hear people at cricket grounds listening to football and wearing football shirts and singing football songs -- don't ever see the reverse.
Dreading the World Cup.

I think to say they were put in this morning in bowling friendly conditions that 245-6 a pretty even day
Report Lix January 3, 2010 2:16 PM GMT
SA in a great position if they can bowl us out for under 350. Pitch has played pretty well this session though.
Report H99 January 3, 2010 2:19 PM GMT
fancy some new ball success already in Eng price here
Report dougydougy. January 3, 2010 2:20 PM GMT
This session has been painful, if england aren't careful SA will get away from them here.

Gloomy out there, not sure why Strauss doesn't just bring his quicks on and constantly bounce steyne, not like England have to chase the game, and it's not as if thi period of play is to their advantage.
Report Lix January 3, 2010 2:21 PM GMT
Steyn will get bored soon. expect new ball fireworks.
Report bigpoppapump January 3, 2010 2:22 PM GMT

Report timmy2988 January 3, 2010 2:31 PM GMT
England surprisingly have gone very flat.

Surely the sight of Steyn strolling out at number 8 would have excited all the bowlers but Strauss has eased the pressure by bowling KP and handed Kallis his centiry on a plate!

Report d13phe January 3, 2010 2:52 PM GMT
no he wasnt worcester but he is getting fitter by the minute

in the last test ntini release all pressure with his bowling

will be a tough ask this time imo
Report oitoitoi January 3, 2010 2:52 PM GMT
being put in id take 279-6 at the end of day 1

not good for me, never back england... i broke one of my rules today....:(
Report worcester sauce January 3, 2010 2:52 PM GMT
agreed jt but lets remember
just how many wickets did england lose last test
Report johnterry 26 January 3, 2010 2:56 PM GMT
they lost 10 last test yes, but they also llost 19 in the 1st test, I laid SA 1st test in the absence of Steyn, with Ntini gone and replaced by de Wet I don't fancy doing the same here.
Report worcester sauce January 3, 2010 3:03 PM GMT
just think that with englands batting
and more importantly saffas attack
steyn just back from injury
morkel bowls well 1nce in blue moon
de wet good debut but unproven
harris not turning the ball
on what seems to be a pretty good batting pitch
when theres no cloud cover
that 2.42 on saffas is very poor value
just my opinion of course
Report mittheimp January 3, 2010 3:07 PM GMT
SA are a decent side that have played badly so far. Steyn is no.1 for a reason, if he finds form England in trouble.

Test is favored pretty equally now - and after England won a very advantageous toss, shows SA will be the happier after the days play.
Report Max and Paddy January 3, 2010 3:09 PM GMT
