Report Birchola December 22, 2009 10:44 AM GMT
I'd have the likes of Lee, Aamer, Afridi in there going on the last 12 months alone.
Report Jan1ne December 22, 2009 10:49 AM GMT
good point, stocks pretty low at the moment

you know things are bad when you can make a case for martin guptill making the top 10
Report Jan1ne December 22, 2009 10:53 AM GMT
zaheer, anderson, swann, johnson, siddle, steyn, ajmal, murali, harbhajan + 1 other possible top 10, in no particular order, going roughly on recent form and ability

Report Jan1ne December 22, 2009 11:28 AM GMT
steyn could be the last bowler to finish his career with an average of under 30

lol birch

p.s. you forgot stuart clark...
Report mafeking December 22, 2009 10:45 PM GMT
how can strauss be 17th ? been absolutely magnificent last year or so ? has to be in the top 5. ludicrous.
Report TopTier December 23, 2009 2:08 AM GMT
Struass one of the best batsmen over the last 18 months but ratings aren't for the best Batman/bowler atm but who is the best over a significent period. Johnson has been much for the last 7 months but can't blow him out just because some a few bowlers have had a purple pahse. If that was the case the Mendis bandwagen would have had him in the top 3 and it is obvious now he needs a lot of work if he can claim a top 10 spot. If Struass continues in the form he is in then he will soon be in the top 10 and might stay there even after a poor series.
Report Smalltime Punter December 23, 2009 7:59 AM GMT
It seems that it takes a while for you to work your way up the rankings (e.g. Strauss), but once you're there, it takes a long time to slide back down again - e.g. Stuart Clark. Nothing against him, but when did he even last play??
Report Lies, DamnLies, and Statistics December 23, 2009 8:09 AM GMT
s clark played 2 tests in last year

would have dropped off the list if he played any more - he is finnish
Report Deadly Earnest December 23, 2009 9:33 AM GMT
I suspect these rankings are being skewed a lot by the nature of Aisan pitches in some recent matches. Leaving Asif(who has only played in NZ recently) aside there is not an Aisan seamer to be seen.

And the batting top ten is totally dominated by Asian batsmen, some of whom have done little of note in Australia, England, NZ or South Africa.

Looks like the asian domination is well and truely under way as far as batting goes .... the bowlers to follow by the end of 2010 i reckon ;)
Report bigjoe December 23, 2009 5:33 PM GMT
DE ... did india play against themselves on those pitches .. or did the aussie , english and saffer batsmen also have a go to boost their averages on those luvly jubly batting paradises in india ;)

By the way .. in tests in india in 2008 and 2009 ..there were 5 draws in 12 matches .... india drew more games overseas then at home in last 3 years ... maybe your looking at the wrong place for flat roads these days ;)
Report 04/09-04/10 another 100k December 23, 2009 6:40 PM GMT
We all know M Asif is the best out there... just a pity he had Shoaib Akhter as his mentor for a couple years...

followed by:

Steyn
Anderson
Lee
Johnson
Zaheer

As for the batting well, you can have about 4-7 players at number 1..........
Report Lies, DamnLies, and Statistics December 24, 2009 6:02 AM GMT
for those who are interested, spanky roebuck's test team of the year, with some criteria that took into account career as well as just this year's form

Sehwag
Strauss
Sangakarra
Tendulkar
AB Devilliers
MS Dhoni
Vettori
Mighty Mitch
Swann
Asif
Steyn
Samaraweera (12th)
Report Lix December 24, 2009 9:57 AM GMT
Has Asif really done that much this year? or even throughout his career?
Report Lies, DamnLies, and Statistics December 24, 2009 10:00 AM GMT
that was the strange part - asif played 3 tests this year - steyn has only played 4, and averaging over 30 - don't think there was much competition there
Report The Great Daylami December 24, 2009 4:46 PM GMT
These ratings certainly stood up today.
