http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/sport/simonbriggs/100004511/that-ian-bell-dismissal-to-paul-harris-and-the-worst-england-howlers/

Briggs, in the Telegraph... asked for a bit of help from his readers to add to his short list of inept dismissals.

Didn't get much help there.... maybe the forum can help him.

The first that springs to my mind is Boycott, at Lords, probably early seventies, hooking in the last over of the day, and being caught at Long Leg - don't remember v who, but I can imagine what he'd've had to say about it as a commentator!

Any more?

The biggest howler ever has to be by the England selectors....by including Bell in the team at every opportunity.Whenever Bell plays England, effectively, are playing with 10 men.

Let's not be so narrow minded and extend the list world-wide.

Inzy falling on his stumps and wasn't he run out jumping in the air once?
Too many Aussies to list all shouldering arms in 2005
Murali run out walking dow the wicket to shake his ptr's hand (who'd have thought the saintly kiwis would have even appealed??)
Steve Waugh was run out on 99 once or twice, that was pretty funny.
Steve Waugh giving Stewie McGill the strike in the MCG test 1998

Yes, Inzy was given out jumping in the air, but of course he shouldn't have been....the laws provide that this is not out, provided he has made his ground and was taken evasive action.

Ineptitude certainly, but on the part of the umpires....plus ca change :|

wasnt younis khan sent packing when being run out for a similar type of thing. at the non strikers end. jumped in the air and was subsequently out??
Report Max and Paddy December 22, 2009 10:56 AM GMT
Not only was Inzamam given run out when he jumped in the air, but a few weeks later he was given out obstructing the field for standing his ground!

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7291827629213340346#

He said something like, "I was out when I jumped out of the way, and now I am out for not jumping out of the way. What am I meant to do?"

can't remember against who but remember michael clarke padding upto a straight one in an odi, then realising started shaking his head in a 'what the fck am i doing expression' before the umpire gave him out.

gibbs tossing the ball up in celebration after catching waugh
Report GrimReaper December 22, 2009 11:41 AM GMT
Len Hutton the only man out obstructing the field in test matches.

The incident you are referring to is Ramiz Raja, who, when on 99 in a OD, hit the ball from fielders whilst trying to run a single

One that came to me in the night, as the England skipper said to the barmaid ;) , was that series where Gatting was out lbw [perhaps it was bowled?] without playing a shot, I seem to remember 3 or 4 times, certainly twice in one match.

Ok, a bit of dust off the old Wisden, it was Lords 1984...

http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/63376.html

The Gowar declaration match - I remember going to bed hopeful the night before ;) (mug!).

There was a serious danger it'd end his test career... as it was his 30th test, still no tons, 1114 at 24 ... got dropped...

Given every one else got murdered in the next 3 game she somehow made it on to the tour to India (good player of spin and all that).. made a ton....

Played 49 tests in all after Lords, averaged 43, with 10 hundreds and 12 50's.... pretty useful.

Somehow, I don't see Bell has the same guts.
