He's got to be up there with Dan Vettori at the moment and he's definitely the best England has had for as long as I can remember.

how many tons?
Report mittheimp December 18, 2009 1:52 PM GMT
however, i'd say quite possibly englands best cricketer at the moment! certainly in the top 3.
Report Howdi December 18, 2009 1:55 PM GMT
great knock this credit to him played for the team.
Report Beer and Skittles December 18, 2009 1:57 PM GMT
Well my recent memory is of the likes of Tuffers who couldnt bat, Gilo who couldnt bowl and Monty who couldnt bat or bowl or field. Not much for him to beat in all honesty.

in terms of spinners who could bat you'd have to go back to Emburey

England's player of the year, by a short head from Strauss. Cert for Wisden if he hasn't got that already (don't think he has).
Report mittheimp December 18, 2009 2:04 PM GMT
emberry was a slow bowler, not a spinner.

are we just comparing with england players?

Warne could bat a bit

sobers could bowl spin a bit
Report fundamentalist December 18, 2009 2:04 PM GMT
i nearly corrected myself to slow bowler mit lol
Report bigpoppapump December 18, 2009 3:35 PM GMT
Swann's a better bat then Embury. for me.

and clearly a better bowler.

and he's not a ****

only one person spelt the old goat's name correctly - that would annoy him :)
Report cricnut December 18, 2009 3:52 PM GMT
best spin bowler/batsman we have had since Ray Illingworth
Report Mellor December 18, 2009 4:27 PM GMT
er, Al Hasan is better than both
Report Birchola December 18, 2009 4:36 PM GMT
Swann has never been a number 9. Bats much higher for Notts (sometimes opens if I'm not mistaken?)

Goes to show the strength of the current England tail.

agreed, vettori's better than swann too.
Report Lix December 18, 2009 4:57 PM GMT
Vettori aint a match winner though with the ball. never seems to get the 4/5 wkt hauls that win games.
maybe thats cos NZ are sh1t and dont have the runs on the board or maybe its cos he plays half his games on unfriendly spin tracks but Swann and other spinners do more to win games imo.

most of you youngsters wouldn't remember ray illingworth, one of englands finest. but good cricketer this swann. embers not in the same street

complete no brainer.
Al Hasan
Vettori
Swann

Swann is pretty good but way too premature to be drawing conclusions like the ones above

Best test spinner of 2009 without a doubt - he's outbowled vettori, murali, harbhajan, etc.

And he's done it without a doosra or 'elbow deformity' :)
Report brentford December 18, 2009 5:57 PM GMT
last 12 months test cricket you's struggle to say he's a lesser bowler than Dan in test matches,
think his slightly freeroll style of batting will level out at some point though,

very early on he actually struggled with the bat and has certainly turned that around, though to a level he'll really struggle to maintain - has plenty of shots but very loose (fine for his role, not a criticism).

Banglas will need to play rather more top class cricket to long term prove the ability and more importantly maybe get the recognition for Al hasan.
Report cricketjon December 19, 2009 6:06 AM GMT
filled the Giles slot pretty well and thats batting one man further down!

decent bowler, matured as he hit his 30s

dont know how much better he will get

and yes, he has opened for notts in ltd overs
