Rob Houwing, Sport24 chief writer

Cape Town The Proteas intended three-Test series in India later this season has been cancelled, in a move likely to spark a fresh furore about the sustainability and protection of the five-day format.

Sport24 learnt on Monday that the intended series has been shelved, despite no official announcement being forthcoming at the time of writing.

Cricket South Africa media officer Michael Owen-Smith said the visit would be

WTF?? The Indians are ruining the game ffs
Report BigMig December 7, 2009 2:22 PM GMT
The decision was made in June this year, according to Cricket SA, and the Test series will be rescheduled when both countries' itineraries permit (probably in about 2025).

This means India only plays 2 tests in 2010 - against Bangladesh.

Then nothing all year :(

Nice way to treat your exiting stars like Dravid and Laxman.

Presumably a cunning plan by the BCCI to ensure that India stay on top of the ratings :^0

two tests for the number one team in the world in 2010?
total farce, if that's the case.
Report Smalltime Punter December 7, 2009 3:02 PM GMT
Think they tour SA at about this time next year, but nothing other than a couple of matches against Bang before then. Very poor.
Report smeagors December 7, 2009 3:08 PM GMT
plenty of T20 tho ;)

Not technically cancelled, the 3 match test series they played in India last year was the commitment to the** - they was never room in the calendar to have tests and ODIs between Englands tour and the IPL
Report Innocent Bystander December 7, 2009 4:13 PM GMT

According to this article Lanka have one 3 test series in next 17 months, and India only 2 tests v Bangla next year :0

However, the article is a bit disingenuous, Lanka turned down a 3 test series in England earlier this year cos the players wanted the IPL money, they want their cake and eat it

joe will be seething .. his demi-gods finally get to the top only to be toppled from their perch by not playing test matches .. do the BCCI even care ?:|
Report Innocent Bystander December 7, 2009 4:25 PM GMT
I hope that by going to the top of the ratings it may actually make the BCCI want to play more tests. They only moved into T20 after winning the World 2020 and after being humiliated in subsequent T20 tourneys they may be more open to tests over T20 if the public see them as best in the world in that format
Report Bernie Larkham December 7, 2009 8:52 PM GMT
Sure the BCCI is to blame to a degree but it all comes down to the usual dipsh!ts at the ICC.

When are they going to get a decent program for all cricket formats? The IPL must have a window, slightly shortened though.

It seems the bcci have woken up -

The BCCI seems to have taken note of the media reports -- national and international -- against its 'reticence' to play Test matches. Sources say negative press apart, the Board itself is keen to give its team the best possible chance to maintain the newly-acquired No.1 status in ICC Test rankings.

The Board is trying to figure out the feasibility of tweaking the**. Everything is still at a planning stage and consent of other boards is also a necessity but recent history shows that few boards oppose a BCCI proposal.

Barring a two-Test series in Bangladesh next month, India are not scheduled to play any five-day games till the November 2010 home series against New Zealand. However, the BCCI has spotted windows of opportunities in the two home ODI series -- against South Africa in February-March and Australia in October when the sides are to play five and seven ODIs, respectively.

The options being thought of are conversion of both series into a two-Test and three-ODI arrangement.

Whether the BCCI officials have touched base with their counterparts in Cricket Australia could not be ascertained but Cricket South Africa has confirmed to DNA that it has received such a proposal from India.

"We have received a proposal from the BCCI to play two Tests and three ODIs when we visit India. We are looking into it," said Gerald Majola, the CEO of the South African board. When contacted, BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said he is "aware" of the concerns but did not elaborate.

Great news MK - The giant is twitching - like taking on T20 when India won the inaugural tourney, now they are losing the T20's the Indian Test Championship is only a matter of months away.

And thank **** for that - best thing that could ever happen, India going #1 in the test rankings

mighty india the ONLY team in history of this great game that has won the 50 over world cup ... and the 20-20 world cup ... and been No1 ranked side in test cricket :)
