No Richie - the official line is that you can only huff and puff if you have taken wickets with the new ball. If your seamers are too sh*t to break through then a failure to take wickets with the old ball is perfectly acceptable.

Report Richard LL December 3, 2009 10:05 AM GMT
good effort to reach no1 by India, dare say it will be a great source of national pride, ironically I think there have been far better Indian sides, that have got nowhere near no1 spot, got to give huge credit to Dhoni but also Ganguly.

952-6 worcester. SL v India about 10 years ago. Think Jayasuriya got 340.

There was also an Indian spinner making his debut who took a wicket with his first ball and then bowled about another 50 overs for 200+ without any further success. Think that was his only Test as well!

Can't remember his name, but I expect Big Joe would have been touting him as the next Warne/Murali/Kumble beforehand...

Sri Lanka been rather exposed this series -
would fear for their bowling in non helpful conditions (raging turners)
batting looks pretty strong still at least on paper but sold themselves a bit short on this tour.

Dont think theres much between SA,England,oz, India and Sri lanka myself.

Proof of that in fact that in last 12 months or so SA beat England, beat oz who then beat SA and then lost to England.
Report brentford December 3, 2009 10:20 AM GMT
SmP - yeah not a great form line, reflective of quite a small margin of quality at the top half currently...could see a fair bit of rotation of the 1,2,3,4 maybe.

looks that way Ted.
Report STEPTOES YARD December 3, 2009 10:20 AM GMT
Wasnt he a nasty little wind up merchant as a player too ?
Report brentford December 3, 2009 10:21 AM GMT
though would probably least fancy SL to maintain their strength within it
Report Smalltime Punter December 3, 2009 10:22 AM GMT
Think Eng have got a bit to do to catch up with the others SY - have only beaten NZ away in recent years, and have lost at home to Ind and SA.

Ind/SA best in my opinion, followed by Aus, SL and then Eng. Pak hard to place given that they don't play much and are hampered by not being able to play at home, but probably 6th is about right, then NZ and WI.
Report Lori December 3, 2009 10:24 AM GMT
My knowledge really is pretty terrible despite the amount of time I spend betting on this stuff, but India seem to have more strength in depth than the other top teams to me.

Concidence? bad view by me? or IPL helping them?

with the huge population, a gradual improvement of facilities for the less wealthy should translate to more and more top class players coming through the regional game.

Richie - it's definitely been done at least once before - by Sehwag himself!

http://www.cricinfo.com/indvrsa/engine/match/332911.html

319 off 304 balls. Think he got to 300 in 278 balls, so this should certainly be the fastest Test triple hundred, if he makes it.

Indeed richieboy :D .. but i have nothing further to add .. i will just repeat what i said 24 hours ago when lanka were favs ;)

bigjoe 02 Dec 13:21

Hi All.. A very interesting day

Just about even stevens .... but lanka, and the injun doubters on here , will be the more dissapointed

On a result pitch, winning the toss and getting to 90-0 and 180-2 .. lanka SHOULD have batted injuns out of the game by now ... they failed.. and this failure will cost them this match

Lanka look on course for around their average innings score for the series so far of around 400 ... trouble for them is... the injun are averiging 500 this series ... On this pitch a score of 500 by injuns will mean GSM to them... Bhajji was good today .. but imagine the carnage he will cause on day 4

To those that may still be unsure about the destiny of this test i say this:

Sri lanka in their 2 innings will not score over 200 ... therefore to win this test, injuns need to score around 600 at most in 2 innings ... can this classical batting lineup that is averaging 500 per innings in thgis series score 600 in 2 innings ? ..i say YES.. i know that.. you know that... every tom dick and harry krishna know that

Only the very optimistic injun doubters will think they cannot score 600 in 2 innings..i have no doubt at all..in fact the ONLY doubt in my mind is.. Do injuns need 2 innings to score 600 .. or just the one innings

Nuff said.... lanka had their chances today .. this game is over as a contest..india will seize control of this test tomroow and on the 3rd day.. only question remaining in my mind is wether injuns win in 4 days.... or can lanka prolong a slow lingering death into a 5th day

Good Luck all

big joe read your post again and have question for
you.
in regards to sri lanka not scoring over 200
in 2nd innings how much will you be putting up £ wise
and what price will you be laying
have a bottle (200) ready awaiting you reply
Report bigjoe December 3, 2009 11:36 AM GMT
worcester sauce... i will not be offering you odds :( ... not cos i am not confident that lankans wont score over 200 in 2nd dig.. but i do not get into this "my dic.k is bigger then yours" exchanges .. probably cos as an injun.. its not :( :(

I stick to my preciction though.. it looks certain that lanka will be batting in the last 5 sessions of the match.. though sehwag and co made the pitch look good today .... just like last test, just cos injuns scored 600+ does not mean its a dream deck :0 .. in that last test lanka failed to reach 250 in either innings :(

This pitch will turn square on day 4 and day 5, if needed ;) .. and like in last test, lanka will go into their innings broken men,, demoralised me... and mentally shattered men after probably 7 sessions in the field :0

200 does not sound much.. but against a fired up harbhjan and a decent back up spin of ojha and yuvraj... on a crumbling track.. lanka will find scoring 200 very very tough ;)

So my advice is simple.. dont try and goad me into giving you a price... i suggest instead you watch things unfold.. then breathe a huge sigh of relief that i did not give you a price ;)

Good Luck :)
