The weather in Wellington has been heavy rain both yesterday and today with more forecast tomorrow. For the start of the test the weather looks fine and its supposed to be improving for the remainder of the test. The pitch is normally pretty good at the basin but being early season and with 3 straight days of rain before the first day it could be a bit green and seam round a bit. This would lead me towards laying the draw with the only problem being the late start time and losing overs later in the day.

The other big development is that Bond has been ruled out for the rest of the series. Pakistan were close to the win in Dunedin despite dropping close to 10 catches and only a couple of their batsmen showing up. The fragility of the NZ order combined with the loss of their main spearhead leads me to believe that 3.3 on Pakistan is excellent value.

What do you guys think?

knowing wellington as i do and seeing the fragility in each order I would say 300 overs might be enough to get this test over and done with.

the late start times will probably be countered by an early start time from day 2 onwards if play is lost on the first day.

I don't disagree with anything you said Biltz. A real shame about Bond too.

Just a cursory look at the Basin results over the last decade would lead most to conclude that every game SHOULD have had a result. There were 4 draws (from 15) but all appear to be rain affected. And prior to 2000, the most recent draw was in 1993.

If the weather is anywhere decent ..which it appears to be, I'd be laying the draw for sure.

Still looks like there's a bit of rain around to me. What's the drainage like at the basin reserve?

Out of the series :(

Bond desimated the Pakistan top order and really set up the win. Hard to see New Zealand winning without him imo.
Report Lix December 1, 2009 11:21 AM GMT
Laying NZ here. Bond is just too big a loss.
Report Ernesto December 1, 2009 11:51 AM GMT
I agree he's a big loss and O'Brien despite bowling at his home ground is carrying a fingers injury and is just not good enough imho.

Can Pakistan really be strong favs though as they are relying on 2 or 3 batsmen to get them their runs.

The draw meanwhile could be a pure weather bet at this ground looking at the stats from the past.

Can't decide which way to go here. Might start with the draw and hope for lingering rain on the morning of the match.

Dont forget wellington much further north than dunedidin , it will get dark a fair bit earlier
Report d13phe December 1, 2009 5:01 PM GMT
Bond took 8 of the 20 wickets in Dunedin and looked the most dangerous bowler by a mile

tbh i really fancy pakistan to win this test but not willing to bet them at their current price

whenever they bat wait until those useless top 3 are out and then back them at a bigger price

about 10 mins from ground its a drizzle and it wont stop today me thinks
Report Biltz December 1, 2009 10:06 PM GMT
Not really sure how good the drainage is but I can remember problems with the bowlers run ups in the past. Hopefully the wind will help to dry the field out a bit, because its absolutely bucketing down here and Im about 20 mins away from the ground. Might be a delayed start tomorrow depending on how good the ground staff/covers perform and the weather in the morning.

Once this band is gone looks pretty bright for the test. Could have a very juicy wicket. Draw a fat lay imo.

Where is this game being played? NZ cricket website says the Basin, yet Cricinfo says the Westpac

The Wellington Test has found a new home, moving away from the Basin Reserve, to the painfully modern and multi-purpose Westpac Stadium. Though it has hosted ODIs and T20Is, this will be the first Test

Are misinfo misleading us all again?

Criocket365 leading the way with more incisive analysis,

The second Test between New Zealand and Pakistan marks the moment Test cricket moves away from its spiritual home in Wellington, The Basin Reserve ground, and heads to the newer, more expansive Westpac Stadium.

Rain is predicted in the days leading up to the Test as well as on days one to three, with sunshine expected to force its way through the clouds for parts of days four and five. All in all it's set to be a wet and windy five days.

Did they research this 6 months ago? :(
Report Ernesto December 2, 2009 4:06 PM GMT

Still a few raindrops on the webcam as well as a mass of cloud but the forecast did say they would be clearing.

Wonder if the start will be delayed to make sure it's had a bit of an airing. Otherwise it's going to be one sweaty old pitch.

Got to back whoever bowls first initially.
