He could get a few runs and maybe a wicket or 2 - but not sure he is the answer
Report Innocent Bystander November 29, 2009 11:39 AM GMT
I think he will do a good job at 7
Report Green Beard November 29, 2009 11:40 AM GMT
hes looked tidier this series when he bowls . . . not sure he has the consistency for tests, but reckon a 5th bowler who bowls as quick as him, and bats as well as him is a pretty useful asset
Report bohemond November 29, 2009 11:40 AM GMT
ok u have swayed me - HE IS IN
Report Innocent Bystander November 29, 2009 11:42 AM GMT
If England fans dont look to him to be the new Flintoff then he will do well. Would add a good balance to the side
Report Girls aloud lezzer scrum November 29, 2009 11:44 AM GMT
We have a great tail now with the likes of Wright, Swann and Broad in the team. Something we badly lacked for years.
Report Green Beard November 29, 2009 11:44 AM GMT
reckon should at least give him a go, his econ rate would worry me though, as 5th bowler sometimes needs to come on and hold it tight at an end, and not sure he can do that, but batting wise we would look a very decent outfit

as long as we drop cook . . . trott to open the test?
Report Innocent Bystander November 29, 2009 11:45 AM GMT
Wouldnt go that far yet GB - good move by England to bring Gooch over, he works well with Cook and should help him
Report Green Beard November 29, 2009 11:47 AM GMT
dont rate him at all, an opening batsman who plays that far away from his body and literally doesnt have a clue what to play and what to leave around off stump was always going to get found out at thi level

just bowl across him, get him to edge and wave him off . . . not an opener for me
Report Green Beard November 29, 2009 11:48 AM GMT

Anyone who thinks Wright should be in the test team needs their head examining IMO. sorry IB.

The idea that you pick someone who isn't test class with bat or ball, just because of an opinion that Broad "isn't a no7 yet" is silly. Most teams would be happy to have one quality allrounder, which we have in Prior, we don't need two. Amusing also to hear ITB/Nass putting this argument about Klusener and Gilchrist not moving up the order. Missing the obvious retort that they were not batting at, er, no8!

That said they'll probably pick 4 bowlers so they don't have to deal with the weakness of the six available batsmen being Cook.
Report STEPTOES YARD November 29, 2009 12:03 PM GMT
Poor
Report Mushtaq November 29, 2009 12:03 PM GMT
Or maybe the weakness in the six batsmen is Pietersen...

Report GrimReaper November 29, 2009 12:05 PM GMT
Bresnan looks a better bet than Wright, imo.

Neither are particularly appealing, though.
Report d13phe November 29, 2009 12:05 PM GMT
saving them for the the tests when it matters
Report Mushtaq November 29, 2009 12:06 PM GMT
At least Bresnan is on the verge of being in England's top 5 bowlers.
Report d13phe November 29, 2009 12:07 PM GMT
i think bresnan is a quality odi bowler because of his subtle changes of pace

a bit like bracken

not good enough for the test team though

would prefer to see them play morgan at 6, prior at 7 and pick 4 bowlers with trott and colly getting a few overs
Report d13phe November 29, 2009 12:08 PM GMT
Strauss
Cook
Trott
KP
Colly
Morgan
Prior
Broad

Would be my test team
Report Mushtaq November 29, 2009 12:08 PM GMT
Morgan isn't even in the squad is he? See no reason why he would be above Bell/Collingwood. It seems to have become assumed that Bell won't be in the team - that is far from a certainty.
Report d13phe November 29, 2009 12:10 PM GMT
he isnt in the squad mushy which is crazy imo
Report Mushtaq November 29, 2009 12:11 PM GMT
Why? He has no pedigree in first class cricket at all, has he? His claims are based entirely on his ODI performances (which hadn't even happened when the squad was picked).
Report STEPTOES YARD November 29, 2009 12:12 PM GMT
I think they will go in with bell at 6 for first test and only 4 front line bowlers with colly, trott and kp to bowl extra overs.

Not sure thats the right way to go but got a feeling they will be defensive in first test
Report Innocent Bystander November 29, 2009 12:12 PM GMT
Hardly scored a first class run for Middx last year - think he could be test class but needs to show it at county level. ODI ability very different from test class - similar to thinking about Colly early in career - his time will come
Report d13phe November 29, 2009 12:13 PM GMT
because the lad is young, in form and can bat

they did the same with trott but the other way round, but finally saw sense.

morgan is a class act, chaging the format of the game wont change that
Report d13phe November 29, 2009 12:15 PM GMT
plus surely its harder to adapt your game to limited overs from longer formats than the other way around

most guy at 6/7 score quickly in test cricket now anyway
Report Mushtaq November 29, 2009 12:17 PM GMT
Unless Pietersen shows some form it might be

Strauss
Cook
Bell
Pietersen
Trott
Colly
Prior
Broad
Swann
Anderson
Onions

Problem being that the two current weaknesses are Cook, for whom there is no obvious replacement (could Trott do it?) and Pietersen, who is the first name on the teamsheet.
Report d13phe November 29, 2009 12:18 PM GMT
you dont see bell at 3 as a weakness?
Report Mushtaq November 29, 2009 12:19 PM GMT
It's not about pace of scoring, but whether you can cope with a permanent ring in the slip and gully region.
Report STEPTOES YARD November 29, 2009 12:19 PM GMT
Wonder if trott is singing along outthere
Report STEPTOES YARD November 29, 2009 12:20 PM GMT
My side exactly the same mushy

Though do expect kp to finally move up to 3 and bell down to 6

kp seems to have accepted it at odi level so think same will happen in tests
Report d13phe November 29, 2009 12:20 PM GMT
pace of scoring sometimes dictates how long slips and gully stay in place
Report Mushtaq November 29, 2009 12:22 PM GMT
Bell is always a potential weakness. But I am just cautioning that the view that he will be dropped is based in part on his absence from the ODI series.

Mark Butcher suffered from the same thing for the second part of his career, nobody would remember him until he suddenly appeared on the teamsheet!
Report d13phe November 29, 2009 12:22 PM GMT

FWIW, I would pick Bell, but don't want him batting @3. That's the problem with our side at the moment imo, there is a dearth of genuine top 3 talent. Cook wouldn't be in the side if there was another opener kicking the door down.
Report d13phe November 29, 2009 12:40 PM GMT
surely trott is the natural no 3
Report GrimReaper November 29, 2009 12:41 PM GMT
Yes, that would be my reluctant solution, I think. It's a tough ask for a guy who has only played 1 test. KP would be the other alternative I suppose, but that might be giving up a strength to accommodate a weakness.

Report RockMonkey November 29, 2009 12:49 PM GMT
Selectorial incompetence has left England with severely limited options for the Test series. Inclusion of two bowlers, in Plunkett & Wright, who could conceivably bowl at Smith, Amla, AB, JP, Prince & Kallis all winter long without getting a wicket, means remaining places virtually pick themselves.

Cook (no alternative so plays for now)
Strauss
Trott
KP
Colly
Bell (no alternative so he gets yet another stay of execution)
Prior
Broad
Swann
Anderson
Onions

Bowling desperately thin but including Sidebottom instead of Bell makes batting similarly weak. A squad of limited options resulting in a limited final XI
