my guess: 698 for 5 and more than 300 for the 6th wicket

India are in real decline, I have grave concerns on them in the future. I can see that within the next 12 months they will struggle to beat Bangladesh. Or even England. :) :0 :_|

hmmmmm seems some still have not worked out the true meaning of huffing and puffing :(

Its always been when a tem takes early wickets with new ball.... but then huffs and puffs to blow the house down with older ball ..or balls ;)

A couple of recent xamles...

Saffers had lanka 12-2 ... they waited 600 runs before next wicket fell :^0 .. that remains the most classic case of huffing and puffing ;)

A close second was pakistan reducing india to 60-4... then seeing a final total of 650-8 :^0

And of course, in this game we saw lanka reduce injuns o 32-4 with new ball ... ended up 425 all ut :0

India have not mde any breakthroughs with new ball in this match .. they id ot o any huffing and puffing accoring to its true defenition :D

HTH :)
Report GrimReaper November 19, 2009 2:32 PM GMT
Got to love that explanation, Beej. Just magical. Let me see if I've got the synopsis right:

"India didn't take wickets with the new ball OR the old ball, and as a result of their failure with the new ball, can not be said to have been huffing and puffing"

:^0

Wasn't there another match involving a team who took a hat-trick in the first over of the match, and then went on to lose by over 300 runs? The details escape me, but I'm sure you'll be able to fill us in.... :^0
Report bigjoe November 19, 2009 2:48 PM GMT
yes indeed injuns huffd and puffed after wga had pakistan 0-3 ..happy to aknowledge that .. but by my defention, they id not huff and puff in this match :D

Bigpop knows my defention is the right one cos i first used it in the famous lords test in 2006 when sri lanka recovered from 40-3 and it took england 3 days to take anther 6 wickets :^0

So i repeat, huffing and puffing has always applied to the effort put in to get wikets with older ball AFTER the new ball has done the trick :0
Report brentford November 19, 2009 2:50 PM GMT
some kind of charter for poor new ball bowling then by the sounds of it ;\
Report bigjoe November 19, 2009 3:08 PM GMT
and if you still not convinced by my defenition....lets go back to the phrase in its original cotext :)

The story of the 3 little pigs .....the big bad wolf knocked a couple of their houses cheaply... but he huffed..nd he puffed....and he huffed...and he puffed to try and knock down the 3rd house :0

I reckon thats GSM to me ... and the end of this fred :D
Report brentford November 19, 2009 3:24 PM GMT
so India are currently less wolf...more asthmatic hamster is what you're getting at :)
Report Damsel November 19, 2009 3:34 PM GMT
If we're quoting from nursery ryhmes maybe we should equate India to Jack in 'Jack & Jill'.

Pitches lke this one are killing Test cricket
Report GrimReaper November 19, 2009 4:53 PM GMT
I really don't know why an experienced cricket follower such as you, Beej, is still apparently surprised by the phenomenon of a new ball taking wickets. Why is this such a shock, especially when combined with early morning moisture and (sometimes) an undercooked pitch?

It does, of course, mean that players who are wicket-takers with an older ball are to be prized....whether through spin or reverse swing...

(GSM my árse ;) )

anyone here waiting for bj to admit that at present the indian bowling attack is carp might as well go and help wolfie with his huffing and puffing .. can we get bj's GSM included on scottys thread :D
Report bigjoe November 19, 2009 5:58 PM GMT
anyother....if conceding 700 is a sign f a carp bowling attack .. then lease include the saffers attack that conceded 700+ aginst lanka... and the enlish attack that conceded 700+ against windies :0 ... unless of course you think in those cases it was mre a reflection of a dead pitch ;)
Report anyother November 19, 2009 6:13 PM GMT
funny thing bj in regards this match is that the lankans managed to bowl out india for sub 500 where-as the injuns failed to bowl out the lankans .. dead pitch or not that fact tells me that the injun bowling was .. in fact .. carp .. was'nt helped by negative tactics from dhoni mind .. you sound like a feckin politician sometimes with your constant reference to how teams other than india have all done this or that when what we are dealing with is the fact that the team that you say is going to dominate world ckt for the nxt few years has failed to take 10 wkts when needed .. to me that = carp with a capital C

As far as I remember ... the big bad wolf huffed and puffed when he was blowing down the first two pigs' houses ... so huffing and puffing can be successful ... methinks
Report bigjoe November 24, 2009 10:35 AM GMT
This thread was born out of Lanka declaring on 760-7 off 202 overs :0

Since that declaration, injuns have scored 829-6 off 219 overs :0

I am going to remain consistent and say Lanka did not huff and puff ;) .. i don't know if others have changed their minds ;)

but seriously though i would like Bigpop to come back and clarify his opinion .. if he thought 598-5 was huffing and puffing.. what dooes he make of 829-6 :D
