Form guide (last 5 Tests, most recent last)
India DDWDW
Sri Lanka WWDWW

Team news
Zaheer returns after a long lay-off to take the new ball, and that means it's a tussle between Ishant Sharma and the returning Sreesanth for the second fast bowler's spot. Ishant should win purely based on the fact that he's played way more international cricket than Sreesanth, whose last game for India was 19 months ago. The second spinner's spot should go to Amit Mishra who, even though he's not played for a while, bowled well in the nets. There aren't too many left-handers in the side so it's highly unlikely the left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha will be handed a debut.

India : (probable) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 VVS Laxman, 6 Yuvraj Singh, 7 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Amit Mishra.

Sangakkara has confirmed that one of Prasanna Jayawardene and Kaushal Silva will keep wicket, meaning that Dilshan will play as a specialist batsman. Dilshan has been under the watchful eyes of the team physio after spraining his ankle but a final decision on his availability will be made on the morning of the Test. The toughest decision, though, will be on picking the second spinner behind Murali. Sangakkara said before the game that the decision would be made on "performers" and by that logic the choice should be the left-armer Rangana Herath.

Herath has done very well in four recent home Tests against Pakistan and New Zealand, taking 23 wickets, and was picked ahead of Ajantha Mendis for the last match Sri Lanka played. Mendis hasn't been the same since his outstanding debut series against India last summer, but mere thoughts of his mesmeric bowling then will put him in the reckoning. The allrounder Mathews is back in the side and will slot in at No. 6.

Sri Lanka: (probable) 1 Tharanga Paranavitana, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene/Kaushal Silva (wk), 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Thilan Thushara, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Rangana Herath/Ajantha Mendis.

Pitch and conditions

The last time India played a Test in Ahmedabad, they were bowled out for 77 on the opening morning on a green top that came under widespread criticism, not least from then captain Anil Kumble. This time, however, the track looks rather flat and neither side need worry about the ball zipping around like its Headingley. MS Dhoni termed it "a bit sticky in the sense that last evening they had watered it" but was certain it would dry up and be "perfect" track to bat on initially. The weather on the eve of the Test was sweltering.

morning all.

Just catching up with play/prices here.

Amazed that the draw only went to 3.9 (discounting the pennies above it at 4.6) when it was 32/4.

Laid the draw at 2.2 before bed and backed at 3.0 this morning before the school run but the market likes it clearly.

How did SL get to 11.0. When was that?

Hey lads, it's a test match cricket thread, with people who like cricket in general and tests in particular. Happily it's a goldmine betting wise too.

Do us a favour and keep the "This is boring" stuff off. Nobody's forcing you to watch/bet on it

If you want advice, plenty on here are happy to give it.

I wouldn't dream of going onto other forums and**ging off their sports. Bit of respect to people who like it.

Give it a rest, eh.

pitch is an abomination (normal for india), so the draw is a strong possibility, sl's needed to capitalise on their good start, they didn't as murali bowled like a muppet, pitch probably wont do a lot for next 2 days so the draw could well be the way to go.

Report big-game-player November 16, 2009 9:10 AM GMT
ok ill guess at the remaining overs and say nearly 19 :) I just wasnt sure if theyd finish the overs or time would beat them
Report dougydougy. November 16, 2009 9:12 AM GMT
He bowled on leg stump the entire afternoon not threatening at all, with very little of his usual variation. It really isn't easy to bowl on here, this pitch is now as flat as the come, it is absolute dream stuff for the batsman, but you would expect the greatest test spinner of all time to keep it tight at least.

Lets hope he does a bit better here.
Report plainmoor layer November 16, 2009 9:14 AM GMT

Report Ernesto November 16, 2009 9:27 AM GMT
Having a look at the stats for this ground and the team batting first has never lost. Only ten matches to go on though the first in the early eighties.

Maybe part of the reason the market just hasn't fancied SL all along.
Report dougydougy. November 16, 2009 9:30 AM GMT

They lost heavily.

Report Lix November 16, 2009 10:08 AM GMT
I think India win this . They're well ahead of the game right now, SL have a long looking tail and a few balls are keeping low.

wont be backing at 2.1 now though. A large SL partnership between any of the 'big 4' will see india blow and is to be expected here.

Be interesting to see whether it swings tomo morning like it did today.

SL wont be batting till mid afternoon at this rate when batting is easiest. Be amazed if the draw doesnt go odds on.

India's quick batting has effectively added time to the match though. we're probably about a whole session ahead of the game right now

ooooh! Dhoni GAWN!!! :0
Report Ernesto November 16, 2009 10:19 AM GMT
You can't fault their rate of scoring but surely with three overs to go he should be playing a wee bit motre cautiously.
Report TwoTonTed November 16, 2009 10:19 AM GMT
lol - Dravid's gonna want the tail to hang around for his double ton now. Harby/Khan can hold the willow but dont expect Sharma and Mishra to last long.
Report dougydougy. November 16, 2009 10:21 AM GMT
On this pitch draw should defo trade sub evs during the sl innings, so if you want to oppose it no point laying it now.
Report TwoTonTed November 16, 2009 10:24 AM GMT
agree broadly with that dougy, a lot will depend on the new ball/conditions and how well the quicks perform. Ishant has been gash lately in the ODI format (though expect a better performance here) and Khan hasnt had a lot of cricket recently however.
Report Ernesto November 16, 2009 10:24 AM GMT

Report LL November 16, 2009 10:35 AM GMT
Why do you guys think the out come will be a draw?
Report Ernesto November 16, 2009 10:40 AM GMT
I'm not so sure it will be a draw. I can see Lanka batting by lunch tomorrow about 450 behind and lets face it they won't hang around. So if the get 350/400 it'll be by mid afternoon on the third day unless they're bowled out cheaply for 200 odd. Plenty of time left in the match.

With no weather threats and no light issues, it's no draw for me.
Report spassky November 16, 2009 11:00 AM GMT
If it is to be a draw, it will be a very high scoring affair. India might have to score a total of 900 runs before they can declare their second innings safely. I can't see any value in any of the prices.
Report bigjoe November 16, 2009 11:12 AM GMT
at 32-4 i guess lanka would had high hopes of registering their first evr test win on injun soil :0 ... but those hopes were ruthlessly...brutally....mercilessly dashed by the sheer brilliance of mssrs dravid, yuvraj and captain fantastic ;)

Game over... pitch playing ok now .. but injuns shold get a first innngs lead now and with indias new sin twins harby and mishra around to take advantage when itch does break uo on days 4 and 5 ...only 2 days of rain can save lankans now :)

Went to bed after Laxman was bowled thinking my draw back was finished and woke up in the middle of the Dravid/Dhoni partnership. Great stuff although maybe they could have scored a bit slower lol.

Think we'll see a result here but not after a decent first innings from the Lankans which should see the usual draw overreaction and it racing in.

Dravid reckons the pitch is fantastic and will be for the next 2 days at least. Maybe it's subconcious but mentions 'draw' 3 or 4 times. Also he doesnt really rate this innings as one of his finest. Says Injuns are targetting 500.

Saw some of the highlights. The pitch looks ridiculously good. I hope for the sake of test cricket in India this game doesn't end in a draw.

The crowd was of course poor. If pitches were less well prepared shall we say, I still think test crowds could soar in India. A lot of fans have to know that the game won't go the distance.
