Did he? I read a brief history of time and can't remember that. I remember a bit about him coming up with a way something could be transferred across the event horizon (I think they named the effect after him). But the entire point of the event horizon is conceptually understood so I can't see why Hawking would have a problem with it, he'll have studied that area for years and years?
