The report states they are returning to hunting whales after a 30 year break.
Utter lie. They've never stopped and got away with it under the guise of scientific research.

Hopefully Greenpeace have the resources to make life difficult for the whalers.

I think they resigned a while ago. Whales are magnificent and highly intelligent creatures. If you ever get the chance Aka, book a weekend in Johnshaven. Beautiful wee place where you can see the whales in the North Sea. Book in advance though, as it is very popular place. Mrs would enjoy it.

Been out on the West Coast off Oban and seen many a dolphin.
A few seal colonies up that way even seen an occasional seal in Oban harbour.

Was there a pod of Orcas up there Mac.
Report themightymac • July 1, 2019 11:26 PM BST
I have never seen Orcas in the North Sea. Minkes are seen in high numbers but the most magnificent sight I ever saw was the Humpback. Plenty of dolphins and porpoises.
Report themightymac • July 1, 2019 11:28 PM BST
Aka do they still run Ferries from Oban to the Western Isles and Ireland in the summer?
Report akabula • July 1, 2019 11:35 PM BST
Nothing to Ireland now Mac, never knew they did.
Yes to the islands.
Report akabula • July 1, 2019 11:37 PM BST

That is interesting to know about the Orcas. Now that is the North North Sea. Never seen them off the East coast though.

Something feels very wrong about hunting whales to me. Different cultures I know but not right in my book. Mind you, they also eat dogs in parts of Asia. Devil

Does 4 or 5 locations Mac (3 or 4 islands)
I love the ferries and when travelling to Skye I still used the small Glenelg Ferry rather than use the bridge when it first opened.
Report akabula • July 1, 2019 11:56 PM BST
BTW the Glenelg ferry was picked as an alternative in ignorance.
You cut off a bit before the Kyle of Lochalsh.
Up the mountain and down the other side.
It takes 4 vehicles Laugh and only operates in the summer months.

Environmentalists like Patrick Ramage are suggesting this is the beginning of the end of whale hunting for Japan actually. The proud nation that is Japan didn't want to give in to the stinky whale rightists, save its face. They have started (official) commercial whale hunting, but at the same time announced that they'll heavily reduce the amount of water where the hunting will go on, along with stopping subsidies. With taste for whale not being too Big in Japan, supposedly mostly elderly folks have it occastionally, there are doubts how commercially viable hunting whales will really be.
Report edy • July 2, 2019 7:57 AM BST
Also interesting, while Japan gets a lot of slack for its current whale hunting, rightly so, it were mostly the USA, UK, Soviet (Russia) and Norway that were mostly responsible for heavily endangering whales all around the planet. Japan didn't have much stock in it.

True Edy but they have since reacted to the damage they were doing by banning whale hunting.
Japan on the other hand are turning their backs on the problem. Hopefully Greenpeace will disrupt them.

Greenpeace (I'm tempting abuse for saying this of course) started off well meaning but have been hijacked by the far left (like most "Green" parties), Sea Shepherd are a different organisation. I think there might be some relationship like the founder was in Greenpeace decades ago or something, can't remember.

When we were a relatively primitive society and whale oil was very important for even basics like lighting you could make a stab at justifying whaling, but now, in 2019 when the planet is awash with cheap oil and cheap synthetic materials and modern efficient agriculture? Then again it's the Japanese, if they aren't whaling they are mass slaughtering dolphins.

Are they hunting whales all over the world or just in their waters?
I am assuming its just in their own territory.
Also assuming whales exist in other parts of the world, why are we all getting so p1ssed at this?
Japan hunts all its whales away. Then we have many whales and they have zero.
Whatever problems arise with extinction of whales will be faced by them.
We will still have our whales so we'll have a pretty good idea by then if we need to preserve them or just hunt and make some dough like the Japanese.
I have never felt any love towards any animal. Not even cats and dogs. So I may not be able to fully appreciate this. But is it purely the love of whales that is making you guys feel so let down by the Japs?

They used to hunt in international waters while in the Whaling Commission, but are now reducing it to only their own waters. That's one of the reasons why environmentalists like Patrick Ramage are calling this return to commercial whaling a success for animal/whale rights.

I really don't see the japanese eradicating any kind of whales, even on their own shores. C'mon, they're not silly. From what I read, the taste for that many whales isn't even there in Japan. Plus, fun fact - Japan, even with it's scientific trickery, was apparently only the 4th biggest whaling nation - behind Canada, Norway, Greenland, somewhat on par or slightly ahead of the USA. Yet you mostly hear about Japan. That's a bit weird.

Report mouse muldoon • July 4, 2019 10:20 AM BST
You'd think the USA would still be more into the whaling game, a single blue could feed an American family of 4 for a week.

You shouldn't take people's posts too seriously here.

Anyways, I was just trying to come up with a scenario where I living in Germany or you in UK should be really worried about Japan doing this. I know we all love to worry so much about the rest of the world. Some of us for some reason expect the world to be like us.

As for the environmental imapct, I already considered that in my post. Japan killing its whales impacts us how? It was a genuine question. If I was into reading such stuff myself I wouldn't have asked here.

Lots of misinformation on here. Firstly they aint returning after a break as they never stopped.
The have been fishing the southern hemisphere and catching whales.
How did they get away with it? Quite simple, they said it was for scientific research.
Report akabula • July 6, 2019 6:36 PM BST
The Faroes have the most barbaric way of 'fishing'.
They have an annual Pilot Whale hunt.
The whales are driven into a number of shallow bays where groups of islanders are waiting with grappling hooks.
They drive the hooks onto the whales breathing holes to kill them.
Children are introduced to the practice at a very young age and have their faces smeared with the whales blood.
A sickening sight.

My memory fails me. Happy
It's the barbaric nature of the 'Grind' as they call it (Think that's the term) that I find sickening.
I can understand some communities live off the sea but fish are abundant in those waters.
BTW you can see them in Scottish waters.
