It`s a very good film. I once knew a guy like Daniel Blake. Hard working, proud man who ended up out of work through no fault of his own during the Thatcher era and couldn`t get a another job because of his age and ill health. He hated going to sign on.

Threw himself in front of a train.

Very good film and sad reflection on today`s society.

Report Aspro January 6, 2019 3:31 PM GMT
The government were quoted as saying that this was fictional and not how it actually is. Some said it was the pressure put on the staff. Both statements are wrong!

I worked with the unemployed for a while and can give many examples of how those that worked in the industry let the power go to their heads, sanctioning for the slightest misdemeanour and making life difficult for those who were desperate to find work. I would guess that 80% of those that attended the work program wanted to work. Yes, there's a hardcore that don't and will avoid it at all costs but the majority do.

One example that still grates me to this day (I can give many more) was when a meeting were held for certain individuals to attend. A young lad, scruffy, probably had the odd toke or two, but still wanted something to get the ball rolling. He arrived around 10 minutes late, apologised, but was immediately reprimanded by a member of staff in front of everyone else around, including many who were not at the meeting but still had to attend the centre. Not a nice experience for him at all, but in a sense she was right; if this was a job interview he would have already failed, but there is a way of doing things and sounding him out in front of many was not the way, imo.

Lo and behold, a smart middle-aged gentleman arrived 5 minutes later and also apologised. The same member of staff said "Oh that's quite alright" and directed him to the room... boy did this make my blood boil.

I would say that 'at least' half the staff were the same, probably more. Give people power over others and they think they're god!

Compassion to one`s fellow man has no political barriers, as shown by many posters on here who are certainly not left wing. You either have it or not.

For every work shy layabout scrounger on the broo, there are 9 Daniel Blakes.

Real life in poor communities is far worse than depicted in that film.

the hidden irony is the little hitlers, power mad interviewers, clerks etc within the system working for  little more than minimum wage basically carrying out the governments austerity drive and thinking they've made it to the BIGTIME, not knowing some of their workmates will be using foodbanbks, unable to afford their own house, rents etc

I've just finished watching it. Great acting but scripted as left wing propaganda from Loach.

That's called an opinion on the film. I made no comment on the unfairness of the system as portrayed by him. You say the truth but it's only the truth as Ken Loach sees it and I think he overdid it.
As you'll see I made no reference to other people showing compassion as being left wing.

I'm midway through watching it again; I was p!ssed last time I watched it and quite incredible how one forgets. So far 55/135 minutes and it isn't far short of what I experienced, if anything he could have pushed the barriers a little more. The hour and 48 minutes(?) he was waiting on the phone was probably exaggerated a little. Yes, sometimes it did take an age but usually 10-15 minutes and I/we got through. Ann, the lady in the jobcentre who tried to help Daniel is rare; usually help was only provided by the programs they were put on, where time was put aside to help individuals. I often found myself helping someone with little or no computer experience, however; I had to book them in when we were quiet (late afternoons) if they wanted one-to-one help because most of the rest of the day I was doing their monthly reviews (I'm sure a few on here can relate to them). With client portfolios around 100-200 people, time was a precious commodity from 9am to 3pm. Sanctions were rife and some unfounded and should never have been given, but still were... again instigated from those same megalomaniacs.

As for the foodbank I often gave vouchers out for them but have never visited one so can't comment on that scene, sad though it is.
Report 1st time poster January 6, 2019 6:55 PM GMT
if your trying to sign on purely to keep your stamp payments up and not receiving any benefits cash wise, seems obvious to me such people arnt shirkers and will be doing their best to find their way back in to work, or maybe in their 60,s and need one more qualifying year for NI etc,so why should they have to go through the same process, evidence of looking for work, signing on ,job clubs, meetings with job coach etc, just to get your stamp paid, seems ridiculous to me to clogg up the system with these people all part of the dehumanising structure of the system, certainly not a nice system to be plunged in to
Report 1st time poster January 6, 2019 6:56 PM GMT
total lack of empathy with those empowered to help people
Report Aspro January 6, 2019 8:12 PM GMT
After watching this again, with a clear head, I have to disagree with you aka. I've seen people join the program with a wide smile on their face and in no time at all they change and never for the better, for reasons that this film portrays; I think Loach was quite lenient in his approach. I've seen mothers sanctioned because their child is off school, ill, and they couldn't attend. God knows how many times I have spent hours trying to get it back for them but until they are with me, or until their child is better, I could not do anything... this could be days, even a week with no money. At one point we were even told to sanction non-attending mothers during school holidays (no kids allowed in the centre), but thankfully this was overturned and they were no longer expected to attend during these periods.

Some staff don't give a... some do. Too many Sheila's, not enough Anna's.

For me this wasn't propaganda; it was Loach's view of the system and I have to say again, he could have gone a lot deeper, because the truth does go a lot deeper when you're on the inside. A jobcentre plus advisor does need to see a CV, typed and electronic. Without it they are sanctioned. Proof has to be provided of 35 hours job searching, if not its a sanction and if you can't use a computer, then, without help, you're basically fooked. I've had phone calls saying they can't do it anymore and they just sign off; it isn't worth the hassle... crime, their only other outlet.

This is down south, where jobs are easier to come by with a big city always turning over new staff. God knows what it is like in other areas; I shudder to think. I could go on, but suffice to say, the truth is harsher than this film.

Sounds like the film is basically Bambi set in a benefits office, with the audience duly leaving in tears.

Do the salt-of-the-earth saints in this melodrama have any flaws at all? Don't they ever get tempted to do a bit of cash-in-hand casual work? Do they complain about the Poles up the road, who are sleeping four-to-a-room and undercutting them on the jobs market? Just a bit of dramatic tension or complexity of character?

Happy to be put right. Just going on what I've read on this thread.
