Lets wait and see where this drone came from. Could be Russia, China, Greenpeace, Juncker or a couple of teenagers. Either way they should be severely punished. It will cost the taxpayers millions of pounds a year to develop a way to stop it happening again. I still think that there has been a total over reaction though. Now every trouble maker on the planet knows how to close an airport for £100. The only solution is to ban the sale of ALL drones until they develop a foolproof way to bring them down.

I have somehow managed to stay silent on the subject all day , prefering to reflect on the 'facts' , although these appear few and far between .
Conclusion : After the best part of 36 hours they still have no idea who is responsible yet , within the first couple of hours of 'reports of a drone sighting' , the authorities made a statement claiming "We have ruled out terrorism" . Therefore the likelihood is that there is a terrorist connection .
So , was there a serious terrorist threat to Gatwick airport that required a cover story in order for the threat not to be made public ? If so , why ? We've had terror alerts over the last few years with little or no attempt to paint them as anything else . Why would this be any different ?

As conspiracy theories go this one is not beyond the realms of possibility :-

The UK voted by narrow majority to leave the EU a result according to some , although without foundation or evidence , which was due to a rise in anti-immigration feeling by many british citizens , even going as far as accusing Brexiteers as having xenophobic and racist tendencies . With every terrorist attack in recent years , both successful and foiled , concerns have grown regarding our open borders policy and now , as we approach the conclusion of Brexit negotiations , deals , no deals and the possibility of a 'peoples vote' any reports of further terror threats would be seen as adding fuel to the leavers fire thus potentially affecting voting patterns in a second referendum , should there be one . The cabinet and those driving the negotiations are , generally speaking , remainers and any raising of the terror threat above amber could possibly thwart their ambitions of the UK not leaving the EU in March . So , in the event of a serious terror alert at Londons second largest airport , it would make perfect sense to concoct some sort of cover story in order to deflect the publics natural concerns away from what could be yet another nail in the remainers coffin .
Ok , so as wild theories go , this may well be up there with the best and most bizarre of them , but nothing about this prolonged disruption makes any sense . Particularly the speed with which they told us that it was not terror related , and yet didn't have the foggiest who or what was behind it . Why rule something out so quickly , before they'd even had an hour to assess the situation properly ?

One day there was a drone circling the airport control tower, next day "we are not sure there ever was a drone". someone is lying and we need to know who. Was the whole story dreamed up by eco warriors on the staff of the airport to cause disruption when there was never any threat? As for the guy who was arrested, if the police had made one phone call to his employer, his perfect alibi would have been known in 10 minutes and verified in 20.

Report John.W.Henry. April 17, 2019 12:02 PM BST
The drone attack that brought Gatwick airport to a standstill last December could have been an “inside job”, according to police, who said the perpetrator may have been operating the drone from within the airport.

Sussex police told BBC Panorama that the fact an insider may have been behind the attack was “treated as a credible line of enquiry from the earliest stages of the police response”.

Gatwick’s chief operating officer, Chris Woodroofe, believes the perpetrator was familiar with the airport’s operational procedures and had a clear view of the runway or possibly infiltrated its communication network.

“It was clear that the drone operators had a link into what was going on at the airport,” he told Panorama, in his first interview since the incident.

He said the culprit had carefully picked a drone that would remain undetected by the airport’s DJI Aeroscope detection system being tested at the time.

Between 19 and 21 December last year, Gatwick airport faced widespread chaos after a drone was spotted hovering above the runway, causing more than 140,000 passengers to face flight delays and cancellations.

Despite a massive police operation and a £50,000 reward, police were unable to find the culprit. Sussex police said the investigation was continuing but it expected it to take “some months to complete”.

Woodroofe, who oversaw the airport’s response to the drone attack, described the incident as malicious and criminal. He dismissed criticism that airport staff overreacted at the time and said it was protocol to close the runway if a drone is present.

“There is absolutely nothing that I would do differently when I look back at the incident, because, ultimately, my No 1 priority has to be to maintain the safety of our passengers, and that’s what we did,” Woodroofe said. “And it was terrible that 140,000 people’s journeys were disrupted, but everyone was safe.”

Gatwick has since invested £5m on anti-drone equipment since the attack, which includes two sets of the AUDS (Anti UAV defence system) anti-drone system made by a consortium of three British companies.

Woodroofe said he is confident the airport is now much more protected, with new state-of-the-art technology that can better spot an attack. “We would know the drone was arriving on site and we’d know where that drone had come from, where it was going to and we’d have a much better chance of catching the perpetrator,” he said.
