New legislation begins today, with all alcohol now priced at a minimum of 50p per unit.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-43948081

I nipped into Tesco last night and they'd already got the new pricing underway. To make it clear, I'm a cheap tart - if I'm having a little sup during the week, then I'll generally reach for a 4-pack of Stella. No great change to the price.

Very occasionally, if it's a lovely evening, I might get a few ciders. Because I'm even more of a prole when it comes to this and don't appreciate a nice cider, I've tended towards the bargain basement end - have picked up a 4-pack of 440ml cans (either 5% if not 5.2%) for a princely £3. Had a look at these last night and they were £4.67 or something, set to the new guidelines.

Can imagine you'd be hard-pressed (*ahem*) to get a bottle of wine for under a fiver now, and I think a litre bottle of spirits won't be found for under £13 now. Ok, means the Christmas booze cruise will be a bit pricier, but not by masses in the great scheme of things.

But I've just done a quick search and found you can get a 3-litre bottle of 7.5% Frosty Jack cider for £3.69. Shocked How much is one 'o them going to cost the neds now?

So for me, I'm all in favour. Think it will go some way to reducing anti-social behaviour, maybe get others moderating intake a bit more.

Was slightly surprised that there's no element of tax to this (extra money goes straight to the supermarkets) where as I'd have siphoned off some of the additional profits and put it towards alcohol support groups etc.

One thing I wondered: if you do an online supermarket shop, do they have a method in place for upping the booze price north of the border?

I am in favour of this, in general, but find it incredible that the supermarkets profit from the price rises.

Always a treat to head over the Tweed, donny. Happy

Jack... I agree. The more I think about it, the more I can't quite work that bit out. Even putting aside the argument of whether any extra profits should go to the government in tax, I Would have thought manufacturers would have just as strong an argument to say their sales will be hit as retailers. Presumably they'll raise their wholesale price accordingly to sort that one out.
Report 1st time poster • May 1, 2018 10:11 AM BST
hard border in Scotland to stop scores of white vans carrying cheaper cider and selling in Scotland, if the wholesale price goes up shops etc will just  pop over the border to stock up surely, yey another ill thought out policy problem drinkers will either have enough to buy their normal drink, travel to England or buy it cheaper of those travelling from England to Scotland to sell it
Report 1st time poster • May 1, 2018 10:13 AM BST
you already have millions upon millions paying 4,5 6times mark ups in pubs ,clubs etc rather than buying it in supermarkets
Report donny osmond • May 1, 2018 10:15 AM BST
tough if you dont live near the border, but if you do then scottish
supermarkets will miss out with folk doing their shopping in england
whilst buying a few bottles of wine.

Eventually they'll find very affordable drugs is the real problem (mainly synthetic tablets that mimic opiates but are stronger i.e Fentanyl) and drinking is only a small part of many a long term wasters' daily regime, that's how it is in the North East of England and the taxpayer funds it via PIP Crazy

Berwick Upon Tweed is a mere 1 hour drive from Edinburgh , 40 mins by train, Carlise in under 2 hours from Glasgow so you can bypass this draconian minimum pricing very easily from 2 of Scotland's biggest cities. A bottle of buckfast is about 7 or 8 quid for 75cl and about 15%, more expensive than a bottle of wine, yet the neds still buy that stuff. The SNP figures saying the measures will save 392 lives in the first five years, thats 78 life's a year, there are bigger problems out there IMO. Scotland are the first country in the world to do this, and Sturgeon is loving all the publicity that this is bringing, but it is irreversible, no party coming in to power is ever going to go back, and it will be coming to England, Wales and NI soon, and you can thank the Wee Scottish Witch for that.
Report 1st time poster • May 1, 2018 5:10 PM BST
how does it work then, its not banned just made more expensive so those with a problem after they,ve ran out of money like a junkie will be just desperate for more, and as the nhs describe something like more than 15 units a week as giving you health problems, these price increases aint going to stop anyuone drink to much today affording more than 15 units a week, not withstanding those dying rightly or wrongly connected to drtinmk ,dying of something else or are the snp giving life guarantee,s for those who reduce their intake, poor jocks cant even turn to the iron bru because little old jamie,s putting tax on that
Report crystalhunt • May 1, 2018 6:21 PM BST
The jocks need to change the culture where you are defined by whether you drink and how much. It's the same in some of the big english cities - some people think its strange if you haven't had a drink by lunchtime or if you're not planning to have one later.

Report Just Checking • May 1, 2018 6:25 PM BST
AFAIK there are a number of ways around this. Online deliveries / deliveries like click and collect can get round it for example.
Also there is from what I heard no limits on bundling, so like you get your booze and bundle it with some frozen chips and pizza as a meal and get it for the original price, in effect. People are resourceful when pushed to it.

It's the nanny state so f=ck em.
Report 1st time poster • May 1, 2018 6:27 PM BST
as Jamie horrible lectures mp,s on sugar tax, its revealed kids meals in his Italian joints have more sugar and salt in them than burger king and pizza express, nice to see these chefie types who,ve made millions out of pushing high calorific meals at people for 30 years now worried about our health, once their bank accounts are bulging

Maybe being too harsh.  They will probably turn into valuable members of society.

Or maybe sponge off the state for another 20 years?

Will definitely happen if rest of UK does the same thing. The supermarkets might not bother just now due to online prices changing depending on whether you stay in or out of Scotland and Scotland only being a small part of the market but if it comes in across the UK there's no way they will be selling the premium drinks at the same price as standard ones.
Report Coachbuster • May 1, 2018 10:38 PM BST
if you smoke heavily and drink ,then you should get a tax refund on the beer part as it's the ciggies that are most likely going to finish you off - they won't both  kill you at the same time
