My uncle had a knee replacement. I have to tell you that he regrets it, but I'm sure it is wonderful for some.

My mum has one.

Don't go NHS as they only provide knees in 3 sizes - small, medium and large. there is no guarantee that it will fit perfectly

Go private - for approx £10k they will make a bespoke knee from a 3D printer which will fit perfectly

My mum is painfree for the first time in 10 years.

She says it is the best £10k she has ever spent

THEY say part replacement is better than full ..

Thanks for that, I've got the money for private but I'll see what the BHS has to say. If I go down the private route I might check out private clinics in Poland etc

I had total knee replacement of my right knee 9 months ago.My leg is strong and I have excellent range of movement. The aftermath of the surgery was not pleasant but I am looking forward to have the same on my other knee.Six days after my op I went out for a walk with my dog.

My particular downside is that I was very bow-legged.The surgeon has straightened my leg which is now longer than the other one.A consequence of this is that I am now walking very awkwardly. The pain in my other knee is now worse than ever and I now have very bad back pain which I didn't have before.

Hopefully,I will get my other leg straightened and be back on an 'even keel'.

You ought to go for it.Good luck.

I've spoken to plenty of people who have had one or personally know someone. I get a 50/50 good to not great outcomes, compared to  hips which is all but 100%.

Thanks for all your replies, think I'm going to hang on to what I've got. I'm sure if I stopped p1ssing about trying to lose weight and got on with it. It would help no end Plain

My mum has had both done. First one was in her 60s and barely any issue with it. The second was in her 70s and she definitely had a longer recovery from it. In fact this last one she went back to the Dr a couple of times because of the pain. All good now though.

jambo - my mum had the same issue. Got her left knee done about two years ago. Didn't go too well and she needed a couple of follow ups. But she was then transferring so much weight to her right leg that when she went in for a check up the surgeon looked at her other knee and booked her straight in to get that one done as well. He thought it might just buckle and snap!

Had both done now. Still in a fair amount of pain and needs a stick but better than before. I think she expected a better outcome to be honest.

P or P,
I take heed of your comment.I'm really pleased with my new 'knee'.I have made my current circumstances re.the increased pain in my other knee apparent to the hospital(King's College in London) and it has been acknowledged that this is due to the aforementioned difference in the length of my legs. However, they keep telling me that they(the relevant department, can not prioritise patients). They appear to work on a 'first come' basis.

My GP will write to them to try to speed them up.I'm not hopeful.

I'm 'Old Labour' and opposed to private medicine but given the increased level of pain that I now have I'm seriously considering going private at circa 13K.

With regard to paying 10 Large and going Private

I had an arthroscopy recently and they gave me options two of them were NHS and MRSA or Private. I went Private which was billed to you the Tax Payer, thank you! Why would I go to an NHS hospital when I could go private even if the same Doctors would be doing the operation!

I am a supporter of the NHS, hate privatisation and Private Medicine but I have lost faith in the NHS. I would rather pay for an operation if I could. If the NHS outsource to good private companies...take the option!

You get one life blood! If you have the monies spend them wisely. If you do not spend them on your knee may I suggest hookers and coke because that will be the only pleasure you will get from life!

My mum was lucky in that while it was NHS she was referred to a private hospital up here (deals with loads of footballers apparently). Think her case was getting critical and queues were too big. She was lucky with the second knee though. Gap between spotting it and swapping it was about two weeks.

With you jambo, am proper old labour too. This is what the tories do though. Not just going to shut the NHS down, they'll simply make it so bad that going private becomes a valid choice.
