Last night I had at least 9 hours sleep probably nearer 10
This is very unusual for me I normally feel good now on about 6 but for years was anywhere between 0 and 4 hours per day.

Yes.  I took early retirement in 2006 and have not used an alarm clock since.
You need 8.5 hours average a day.
Do not believe anyone who says the only sleep 4,5,6 hours a night.
You would be unable to function is you built up a big sleep deficit.
Report SontaranStratagem • March 12, 2018 5:36 PM GMT
Can't sustain the 4 hours a night sleep, after a good few weeks or even a couple of months you'd be too tired to get up, I've tried it over a decent period and eventually I was sleeping through the alarm clock and sleeping for 8 sometimes 9 hours.
Report DenzilPenberthy • March 12, 2018 5:39 PM GMT
My health was poor on 4 hours or less couldn't really function properly and was constantly stressed though I partly blame drinking back then as i drank to de-stress and the cycle continued
Report Injera • March 12, 2018 5:39 PM GMT
I can do 8 hours comfortably. Happy I have great sympathy for insomniacs. An insufferable condition. We all need respite from life and sleep is certainly mine.
Report TheBaron • March 12, 2018 6:06 PM GMT
Its not the quantity its the quality of sleep that matters.  There is no one size fits all.  I would feel better with 6 hours of quality sleep ie deep no dream than 8 hours with less time in deep sleep.

I am like kincsem, I rarely use an alarm clock and just get up when I wake up and do not feel tired.  If I am still sleepy I go back to sleep.

I think it is very important not to use an alarm clock, the sudden alarm call is like you are being attacked by animals and can do your heart no good.

at some point in time it became uncool to sleep. it's almost like a badge of honour "i only get 4 hours sleep a night." who is honestly working 20 hours a day. after 16 hours of being awake your brain cells start to destroy themselves. there's nothing "cool" about not getting 8 hours sleep a night. it's absolutely fundamental to good health.

read a book called REST by alex soojung-kim. he talks about how the most successful people in the world get adequate sleep and also take daily naps to improve their mental and physical health.

B_M, you posted this at 2.25am Plain

Do you have difficulty sleeping or are you in a different timezone?

I have no trouble getting enough sleep. I often go to bed at 9.00pm and stay there for 12 hours Blush

I read my Kindle at night for an hour or so, then, in the morning I wake up at 6.45 and have a cup of tea in bed, another read and then I tinker on my iPad until it's time to get up.

On my two work days I have to drag myself out of bed at 8.30. It's a hard life.

No work this week tho', because it's Cheltenham! Excited

9 is too much but I regularly get 8, it's why I'm so beautiful Wink

In ye olden days it was apparently common to sleep 4 hours twice a day, and the 8 hour solid is a more recent invention?
Some people recommend that you do that - sleep 4 hours twice as it's more natural.

I can't sleep for more than seven hours. I can wake up at 6am on a Saturday and Sunday and never get back to sleep.

I always have an hours kip Fri-Sun about 12pm/1pm. That might not help, but I do feel well refreshed once I've realised where I am, and what day it is!

Laugh

I get 7-10 hours a night and 9 hours is not a rarity at all, however; I also suffer from dropping off (will have to try LS's advice), but once gone heaven only knows how many hours I'm going to get. I do find I feel at my best between 7 and 8 though.

haha well spotted. i am a chronic insomniac since i was a teenager, always stay up after midnight, my body clock is possibly on LA time at the moment although i was up at 830 GMT this morning so I shall be tired pretty soon .  i usually hate getting up early, it's one of the reasons i work for myself now ;)

socially the 8 hours sleep at night makes perfect sense, we are animals that live during the day so the night-time is a great chunk where we can get all of our rest in. 2x 4-hour sleep chunks would bother me... i do advocate an afternoon nap though, it worked for winston churchill ....

Churchill had his bottle of Pol Roger delivered by his butler at 11am every day.

He said about Champagne... "In success you deserve it and in defeat, you need it."

He also said more generally....."Dinner would have been splendid, if the wine had been as cold as the soup, the beef as rare as the service, the brandy as old as the fish, and the maid as willing as the Duchess."

Physical inactivity is the enemy of a good nights sleep.
Insomniacs should always consider taking regular exercise as their first option.
A late meal sometimes helps.

Medication can also ruin your sleep.

Drinking is another drawback for a good nights sleep. You drop off easily enough, but wake up after a few hours then can't get back to sleep.
Some people say this condition is the result of not having had enough to drink!
Although I'm not too sure about that.
