Third world roads - a total national disgrace. We should withhold our road taxes. Needs billions to put right about a fifth of what we're due to pay the EU .
There are potholes in the speed bumps where I live.
Everything alteration the council makes to the roads turns out worse than before they started. Clueless jobsworths spending other people's money on stuff that doesn't need doing. Then after they've fouled everything up, they say its the governments fault for not giving them enough cash.

Not all road patching is down to the council, but they should make utility companies guarantee any filling in they do for a decade and immediately fix any that fail. Shoddy work by these companies should not be paid for by local taxpayers.

Big companies could do their bit, like the supermarkets whose approach roads are in a mess. Maybe companies could sponsor the repair of main roads close to their premises.
DrC I think some councils are taking the pis$ but it seems a bit of a coincidence that the problem is the same all over the country. The government's austerity cuts have forced councils to cut back so much that road repairs have a low priority. Failure to act over the past five years has caused what is now a dire problem, a national embarrassment. Repairing potholes now is like a sticking plaster and many roads need totally relaying. People should start suing the ar$e off the councils/government. It's got me seething everyday and I am now trying to plan journeys to avoid as many potholes as possible. Tonight's ITV programme barely touched the extent of the problem. People are dying due to pothole related accidents. The cost of damage to cars tyres/suspensions etc, must be astronomical and must be a factor in the rise in car insurance which is now through the roof.

Councils take all their wages, pensions and holiday money out the kitty on day one. After giving themselves pay rises for the year. Then they look at how much money they have left for care homes and roads etc
Oh look we have run out of money.

After minor roadworks the hole / trench is temporarily reinstated, usually with tarmac. The soil underneath will settle over time, and the tarmac will be laid again, and again, until settlement is complete. Then they will do the final reinstatement of the road surface. If you relaid the original road surface immediately (also known to the public as "repair it properly") the ground would settle underneath, a vehicle would break the surface repair and drop into the hole, sink hole style.
I am an expert on this, sort of. In my former life as an accountant I had to work out the liability for reinstating all the holes in the ground dug up by a utility company in a city.
