TV adverts have the annoying habit of playing songs that are covers of the originals but in a word cr@p ie the annoying TUI advert with a totally bolloxs version of Chaka Khan's Ain't Nobody but sometimes a cover version matches or exceeds the original. Three that come to mind and I like are Great White's cover of Rock n Roll - more Led Zeppelin than Led Zeppelin - Scorpions cover of The Who's I Can Explain and Rage's pumped up disco version of Bryan Adams Run To You
Not a cover exactly, more a mash. I love it, but Queen fans in uproar! Lol

The Soft Cell version is great and of our time and the one we may remember and play but in no way is it way better than the original. If you consider the time of the original 1964 and the equipment used to record it you could say it has amazing power.
I also liked the Marilyn Manson verson...or maybe I just liked the video!

She Drew The Gun - Trouble Every Day (Zappa). Everything a good cover should be; taking the original good source material and twisting and expanding on it till it becomes something new - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUklMnEO_yg&list=PLPcfz82oGbFvtC2bdxM334glOTzKM9G2Z
Anyone mentioned Lemonheads' cover of Mrs Robinson yet - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dgX93HBUUA Metallica - Breadfan (Budgie) . God, I loved Metallica. Still do in a reminscent sort of way. Brakes - Jackson (Hazlewood & Sinatra, Cash & Carter). From one of most criminally forgotten bands of this century imo. Guest vocals from one of the finest female singers around, and nice twist in reversing the roles - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZ4dSOejBPg&list=RDQZ4dSOejBPg&start_radio=1&t=0
Living Colour - Memories Can't Wait (Talking Heads). Love TH to bits but prefer this version. Just got a great pulse and rhythm and fantastic players - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoOvbNv-XxU

Grace Jones' version of Marianne Faithfull's I've Done It Again.
To be fair, Marianne Faithfull never actually recorded the song, so Grace Jones' version didn't have much to beat. But they all count.

I will admit to liking Placebo's morbid version of Running Up That Hill. Donna Summer's disco version of MacArthur Park was superb and Joe's version of With A Little Help From My Friends should hold its own on this list (strangely not mentioned on here, unless I missed it)

Not many singers can take an Elvis song and do a better version, but Billy Fury did with Because Of Love, which was a song from the Elvis film Girls Girls Girls.

Lot being made of the advert but it is down to the song. Lovely interpretation. None of the vocal histrionics you get so often these days. Ran through her other songs but sadly nothing remotely as good.
Alphaville's other song, Big In Japan was also well covered by Ane Brun:-

Enjoyed that, preferred that to their cover of Summertime Blues. I use to be Rush crazy when I was in my middle teens round Hemispheres time, now I very rarely listen to them.

Slower than the original and the whole fun of it is the recklessness of it. You shouldn't be hearing the notes all played cleanly and individually; all about the pull offs. And they kill the middle too. Van/Page version far better. My band plays it pretty regularly and it's one which we'll push back if we think the people are up for it. Guarantee if it's near the end of the set then it's lightning and I better be ready.
