casting a tint little guy like dennis waterman as a minder, about as intimidating as candy floss, george cole as arthur daley, a posh bloke who was about as convincing as prince charles, ludicrous story lines...adored by the same kind of people who loved only fools and horses, thickos.

George Cole had working class roots.

Dennis Waterman's brother was British and European welterweight champion.

George Cole's portrayal of Arthur Daley is up amongst the all-time great comedy performances. Never bettered in my view.

Brilliant programme - They had fantastic chemistry.

Unlike the later series, with 'Ray'
Which was not very good at all.
Report pumphol. • December 22, 2017 8:45 PM GMT
Thought the series with Ray were ok mainly cos GC was still excellent, however not a patch on the DW era because they were so good it made the latter series look worse than they actually were.
Report GoBallistic • December 22, 2017 8:51 PM GMT
I thought Gary Webster was ok but the later plod was nowhere near as funny as Chisholm and Taff
Report akabula • December 22, 2017 8:54 PM GMT
Was a great series and I wonder if we hadn't seen the DW era if we'd think more highly of later episodes.
Report pumphol. • December 22, 2017 9:34 PM GMT
Basically watched most of them again in last couple of years, some of the storylines with GW were actually pretty good.
Report raspberrybottom • December 22, 2017 10:41 PM GMT
Was a bit of a laugh - not to be taken too seriously, I suppose.

Bit like Fools and Horses, etc.
Report Coachbuster • December 22, 2017 10:42 PM GMT
Chisholm and Jones were a brilliant double act  ... Cole was great as Arthur imo .
Report SlippyBlue • December 22, 2017 10:45 PM GMT
Agreed Coach, I put Arthur Daly in the same league comedy wise as Basil Fawlty and that is very high praise indeed.
Report cardifffc • December 22, 2017 11:01 PM GMT
best laugh ive had is when Pandora said he was a pro gambler..............minder is a classic but should have stopped when waterman finished
Report bodil • December 22, 2017 11:02 PM GMT
There was an 'exciting' time in my life when the few pleasurable sedentary interludes involved watching Minder (Waterman years) and Hill Street Blues. Still crazy after all these years.

I have set the Hounds of Tindalos on the wretch Pandora 1963 (a poor year).
Report SlippyBlue • December 22, 2017 11:12 PM GMT
Bodil, Merry Christmas to you by the way. I absolutely loved Hill Street Blues as well and never missed it when it was on back in the day.

Dave the barman, the character that Eddie Large bizzarely liked to do impressions of! ("Hello Arthur, the usual Arthur?")

I bought a place in Spain from Dave the barman's daughter Mel, she was quite a looker.

And a good Xmas and 2018 to you SlippyB. HSB was terrific - slightly dated now with the hippy/gang side of things, but great ensemble acting. If you weren't there at the time you can't know how good it was, though that wont sell it today.
Report Coachbuster • December 23, 2017 1:04 AM GMT
I've never ever seen Hill Street - will have to watch that next time it's shown Cool
Report cooperman • December 23, 2017 7:35 AM GMT
Not quite as bad as casting Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, now that was a stretch of the imagination.

Absolutely, though I warmed to Webster toward the end but, for me, it was mostly all about Arfur.  Without doubt one of Britain's finest.  RIP Sir.

OP -- casting a tint little guy like dennis waterman as a minder

According to Wikipedia, Waterman is 5'9" which is the same height as Reg Kray and just an inch shorter than Mike Tyson and Princess Diana.

Minder was good and hill street blues one of my all time favourites.

I am belatedly watching 'the sopranos' after all the awards and constantly being voted top or near of all the box sets and I am disappointed, it is not a patch on hill street blues.

Hill Street worth watching just for the gorgeous Veronica Hamel as Joyce Davenport. LoveLoveLove
