That's odd, this good post Brexit economic news, it's not on the BBC website and wasn't on the news? Also great news for anyone with an ISA or pension fund invested in it, which is a very large amount of people. But a news blackout on the success of the UKs primary market indicator, that seems strange?

There are a lot of conspiracy theories that float about these comments but:

Surely they don't ignore good economic news yet focus on any bad news they can say is due to Brexit?

I mean ok we all agree: They faked the moon landings, and airplanes emit trails to control our minds, and aliens were at roswell and they shape shifted into lizards, and that Moneytree is the reincarnation of the Oracle of Delphi, and that my clothes will come back into fashion if I wait long enough ..

.. but the BBC being biased, surely not? Too far fetched!

Who pulls the strings at the BBC is the question.

The EU if their Brexit stance is anything to go by.

There's a remoaner and bias apologist there. Better not argue, snowflake mode will engage and we'll be called racists.

I've a good memory and I can remember the FTSE getting reported on the news many times when it wasn't doing anything special, today it broke an all time record and there was no coverage. The BBC talked a lot about the FTSE going DOWN straight after Brexit, lots of reporting there, oh yes, no mistake about it, but they don't want to cover it now it's recovered.

The BBC however did manage to fit in a big long story about how some play had lots of "diversity" in it, with major white figures from US history played by black guys. That's odd, when a black guy is played by a white guy, don't the people like the BBC get all angry?
Report Wallflower • December 21, 2017 11:14 PM GMT
FTSE up or down - is rarely a good or bad indicator of UK economy. Given the "open access" nowadays it has similarities with a gambling platformCool (God forbid!). Ok, bit of exaggeration but not completely.

I cannot stand that weedy little pr1ck, Gove - and his more or less saying "don't listen to experts", listen to me a man of the peopleCry. HOWEVER there is no doubt about it economics is a very imperfect "science" - I agree that it is the "failed science".

Sometimes the "masses" ignore what they are told and they behave instinctively with what money they have. 2018 will tell the tale - through unexpected consumer behaviour which economists will be extremely wise after the event, clambering over each over to say they predicted it.

You can posture all you like about how you think it matters, it's remoaner sounding rubbish.

Fact #1 is they USED to cover it a lot, fact is they DID give it a lot of coverage when it went down after Brexit to say "look isn't brexit bad" and now it's doing well they don't cover it.
Fact #2,3,4 is that many of us have an interest in the ftse via direct investment, ISA trackers + complex funds, and Pension funds investing in FTSE which affects anyone who has a pension that isn't final salary. Or even those if it helps make them viable which many are struggling to be.

And there other reasons why it matters.

So how about you admit it's bias and stop the cr*p because you and they don't like to see all the things doing well since Brexit, that people like the BBC don't like to talk about!
Report Dr Crippen • December 21, 2017 11:31 PM GMT
If the FTSE goes down it's a sign of the poor health of the economy, but if the FTSE goes up it's not a sign of the good health of the economy.

That's the BBC's stance on the market.

I cannot understand how a corporation can talk uk plc down

surely this is counter productive economically to create uncertainty  in markets etc  coz that is exactly what they are doing

but then how many business based or experienced manufacturers, ceos, or the small business experienced etc etc  are there in the bbc etc

i would imagine very few hence the bias and plain ignorance

As an interested observer, I am not sure that breaching 7600 is that significant, or even newsworthy, unless you think that 7600 is some kind of important ceiling.

7600 is only marginally higher than two previous peaks this year - end of May, and end of October.  Of course, the May peak preceded the Brexit vote but the ftse fell from the end of May right thru to the actual vote, and then only fell a little more before recovering.

I'd have to look it up but I recall that the BBC reporting of the time was far more focussed on the exchange rate changes, than any changes in the FTSE.

Putin's government doesn't put up with any anti-government reporting by some of their journalists - arrangement is made to have some of them murdered to silence their views. Last time I read a report on this it was 12 Russian journalists killed so far in the last few years or so.

I'm not suggesting anything here by the way!

7560 is a very significant level statistically according to technical analysis. However as one incredibly wealthy gentleman who knows what he is talking about once said "Never confuse the state of the economy with any of these indices". According to a not as wealthy gentleman "The bigger the bubble the bigger the bust!" These levels are RIDICULOUS and cannot be sustained in the long term. The housing market is already showing signs of a slowdown. Just look around you at the for sale signs staying up for much longer. Much lower offers are being accepted where offers are actually being made. Don't panic, just be very very careful!

The UK is a good place to do business (that's fake news btw). It's the BEST.

'An annual ranking has declared the UK to be the best country for business next year, despite uncertainty over Brexit.

As business groups clamour for clarity on future trading arrangements and warn of financial services firms enacting contingency plans to maintain EU access, Forbes said the country had risen in its rankings from fifth last year to FIRST.

It judged 153 countries on 15 factors including property rights, innovation, taxes and red tape.

The report pointed to the current dominance of the UK's financial services sector and investment by top US technology firms, including Apple, as major positives for the country.'

FGS I even mock the conspiracy nuts and whoosh, they (including the worst on the forum) are off all doom and gloom etc. Yes one day it will come down a bit from a high as that's the nature of the game but it's still below long term trend, it's hardly on some shocking mad "bull" run and just because housing is overvalued, which is it is, it doesn't mean the FTSE is.

"Record High" is a clue it's a "Record High", that's all. Please adjust your tinfoil hat.

I'm sure pensions payed more back then due to a combination of what was generally obtainabe on interest etc vs people living shorter lives and so on. The point is that the bigger the fund the better.

Oh and inflation is a relevant point, remember that, just a couple weeks ago? It had sat on a tiny 0.5% since the last the Betfair Oracle of Delpih had had a winning tip, then moved to 0.25%, then moved back to a still tiny 0.5 and the BBC went MAD for it! Like oasis on coke. They made this a huge story, all doom and gloom and isn't this bad, and of course the subtext is Brexit is causing this bad econmic nightmare. They were even interviewing people a guy about losing his home and other remoaner lunacy.

I'll place bets most people don't even know what their mortgage rate is to +/- 0.25%, I don't, I just know it's "really low" and "still really low".

The index is going up on low volume, which is a typical Santa rally, little serious buying.
Because low volume and higher tops suggests a mark up. Meagre demand outstripping meagre supply.

High volume and little progress would suggest serious selling. Supply satisfying demand.

Isn't the professionals' bonuses calculated on the position of the index at the end of the year?
They used to be.

Around 7% higher than it was in April 2015, whereas the pound is down 20% against the Euro for the same period, anyone could be forgiven for thinking these things maybe linked in some magical way.
