anybody betting on a 1.01 shot based on a few minutes of the public voting by telephone needs their heads examining. Didn't look at the betting until the result was announced and was truly amazed to see £20k at 1.01 in the pink side on Joshua, with £76k already matched

I have never liked mo, but I suppose he did deserve it. These awards are more like a lifetime award.

I'm amazed AJ didn't win. Heavyweight boxing champion of the world is THE sporting achievement - nothing tops it IMO - whoever holds that title is recognised by billions around the globe.

amazed how close it was, a lot of lessons learned for people who bet on this thing I'm sure
Joshua only 18 votes of 3rd, that's got to hurt for the 1.01 backers
betting on public sentiment is a dangerous thing!

No, akabula, unfortunately I did not back it each way. If I had been in a bookies I probably would have done, but betfair spoty market encourages you in a way to only back win. I thought possibly I could trade out, but they suspended really quickly. I didn't even look at the other spoty markets, I must do in future, but they are usually very weak.

Anthony Joshua best priced 1/7 with Bookmakers to win SPOTY, Lewis Hamilton best priced 8/1 and Mo Farrah best priced 66/1. Farrah wins and Joshua and Hamilton not in first three!?!? Did bookmakers really get it that wrong or was there another phone jam on certain contestants like in 2015??? Interesting BBC!!!

I understand why you might think that, but you are wrong. There`s a whole world of Specials/RTV betting, with virtually every event being decided by the factors you mention, and there`s a forum on here, `Specials`, just two above `Chit Chat` on the left of your screen. By far the friendliest forum on here, everybody helping each other, learning from each other. If you can be bothered to read enough threads, you will also see that the regulars on there are all long-term winners, all posting what they`re doing pre-event, not after-timing. Using what I`ve learnt from them, I`ve been winning at it for 13 straight years, even though I`m a phucking idiot! The reason it`s so easy is that there`s no hard historical form to go on, meaning the markets are always clueless, leaving results like tonight`s a fairly common event, always accompanied by huge volatility, making it a doddle for traders.
Unconvinced? Read enough threads, you`ll see for yourself.

Jessica already is a Dame. Now a Lifetime Achievement Award? She's 31!!
Many sportspeople go onto have careers in admin, coaching or some sort of ambassadorial role. Why not wait till she's 60 and see what she does?
I guess the nominations came too late for Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose.

Tim - I'm not criticising people who vote for specials. I read this blog all the time for info but don't post on it and I'm nt just a horse betting man. I'm massively up over the last few years on politics having voted for a tory majority in 2015, Corbyn to retain labour leadership the other year, Brexit and Le Pen to get to French run off. I've even voted on euro vision. I just feel that SPOTY has a combination of 3 elements that make it a dangerous betting medium. BBC with a previous record of rigging phone ins. The fact that on the day public can be swayed by the programme presentation and the bbc will always promote the candidate that fits the organisations profile. Also the fact that it doesn't cost a fortune for a block vote to be generated that tips a result. Mo should have won it before and it's likely that his drug cheating coach held back his chances. As I've said politics is a great earner. Too many punters read too much into the BBC'S misreporting of political sentiment caused by their liberal extremist values which has a knock on affect to the prices. As much as I hate the BBC they've done wonders for my bank balance :-)

I hadn't heard of 5 of the 12 including 2nd and 3rd.
That either says something about my lack of sporting knowledge or the BBC's spin on sport.
I am no sporting mastermind, but will go for the latter.

BIGNORM; 25 years as an indie bookie has shown me that every punter has their own `betting pattern`; some like lumping on `good things` like AJ at 1.10 yesterday, but anyone betting like that in Specials will lose long term, as Specials is just too volatile to ever justify such prices, yet the supposed `money-buyers` still turn up, trying to be clever. And losing. So, what you refer to as `make it a dangerous betting medium` is spot on, IF you like `bankers` Don`t know how high Mo`s price went yesterday, but I was backing him at various three-figure prices, up to 330. Not trying to show off, merely trying to illustrate what a mad world Specials markets are, and why more people should be getting involved. Unless you like 1.10 bankers, of course!

Tim: Well done bro that's an awesome result. I didn't see Mo at more than 66s but you're right, with the uncertainty and looking back at previous results, there is a lot of value to be had in picking an outsider. I wonder for instance what price Calzaghe was a few years back. I'm not a complete convert yet but I'll keep an eye on SPOTY next year and may have a small wager.

The year that Calzaghe won, I had asked my dad previously who he wanted to win and he said Calzaghe. So I was watching the prices whilst the voting was on and I saw the price about Calzaghe falling quite rapidly so I lumped on. I think that the voting had got out and someone was trying to profit. I think they are better at keeping secrets now.
Bearing in mind that this was ten years ago I think that is what happened.
