The local authority has (via Twitter) advised residents (and presumably the rest of the world) not to worry if they see Armed Police Officers doing the rounds this Christmas.  Apparently, they are being deployed in an attempt to try and ensure "everyone is safe".

Luton Council does not identify what exactly is this threat is that requires Armed Police patrols. It has asked readers to report "suspicious activity", but again does not explain which activity might require an Armed Police response?

What on earth has happened to Luton that might require the presence of Armed Police patrolling the streets at what is traditionally the most peaceful time of the year?

Like Manchester, Luton has a big problem with Islamic extremists.
Report Torquemada • December 16, 2017 5:42 PM GMT
Did anyone see those Islamic marches a while back? They were openly chanting about killing the police and burning politicians, aggressively threatening women in dresses etc. Sickening and unbelievable how they get away with it!
Report treetop • December 16, 2017 6:07 PM GMT
Surely they were all arrested for hate crime torque ?
Report Torquemada • December 16, 2017 6:17 PM GMT
If they were arrested, I saw no evidence of it. A journalist called Stacey Dooley filmed similar marches, it used to be on YouTube.

Had occasion to go to Luton a couple of years ago, driving through the town reminded me very much of what had happened to so many towns around Birmingham and further North.
And the politicians still pretend nothing has gone wrong.

I went to a Luton Town football match several years ago. I looked for the border post at the entrance to Kenilworth Road and regretted not bringing my passport to get in! It was unbelievable. And if its got worse since then...................................

It is full of peaceful people Doctor - how very dare you. etc.  Pick an ism or phobia label to apply to your self (like a sign on your back) and hang your head in shame

FYI the armed police are to guard against nasty right wingers. The sort of people who black up or hijab up to provoke racial tension.

Muzzrat against Muzzrat probably.....don't forget they hate each others branch of Islam as much as anyone else.

Perhaps I am just being phobic but when ones life is at stake then it's only natural !

Luton is an absolute shytole!
Report SlippyBlue • December 17, 2017 6:26 PM GMT
It is indeed a truly hideously appalling place that regularly features highly in the "worst place to live in the U.K." table.
Report LAMBETH WALK • December 17, 2017 6:36 PM GMT
yeah .. them nasty right wingers who are allowed by the police to shout and abuse women in the street for daring to look feminine .
