I worked at the Electoral Reform Society for a short while once anxious. While I was there, NUPE ( I think) held an election for its officials for which we did the collection and count. I was staggered by the amount of spoilt ballot papers which had been defaced by anti-Bickerstaffe stuff, some of it very near the knuckle.

I must confess I had no idea who the chap was at the time.

He fought very much for the minimum wage and for pensioners rights , met him a few times a really sound guy
