The death penalty for low level crimes ?

Really ? and perhaps we should bring it in for idiotic ideas such as this.

in the past we had the death penalty for theft of goods worth as little as 10p

this was replaced/supplemented by transportation to australia as that was considered more civilized

20-30% of our criminals were sent over there in the early 19th century



our last possible death penalty was stopped as late as 1998 (treason) with
last execution being in 1964

Treason yeah...Hmmmm, wonder why they stopped that one ?

They were brutal times,  twelve pence became the measure of a mans life when concern grew over the death penalty for petty crimes when a thief was executed over four pence.

And despite this sometimes there were signs of change such as when in 1292 a 14 year old thief was saved from hanging by two judges who took two years off his age.

Weren't setting fire to a Naval Dockyard and raping the sovereign's eldest daughter still capital offences long after murder ?

Hence the expression, may as well be hanged for a sheep as for a lamb. It is said that in the Middle Ages there were 700 capital crimes.

rape was a capital offence in theory in medieval times, but it was difficult for women to get justice.
Iin 1438 Joan Chapelyn who had killed the rapist who had assaulted her was acquitted on grounds of self defence.

The fact that the rapist was a Frenchman undoubtedly helped her case.

Wasn't there that case a few years ago where a guy got the death penalty for not buying a tube ticket ?

Some sentences were particularly horrific. The unfortunate Arthur Ailward was blinded and castrated in 1170.

However people believed in the power of  prayer and after saying his prayers it was reported that his lost parts were miraculously regained.

Although his eyes were now black, and his testicles smaller.

Really ? Well I think it's a good idea, these scum who break into people's houses and trash them for no good reason, steal car keys go joy riding and wrap the car round a tree. Not forgetting the fact that they could kill a child or a member of YOUR family lfc. I for one wouldn't shed a tear for scum like that. Plus you miss the fact they have the choice after being caught the first time to go on the straight and narrow. This excellent idea would also help the government with its police cuts. Think get rid of the scum less crime

I rest my case lfc and in this case I wouldn't give them the caution not to be naughty again ! They have no regard for human life so why should society value theirs..................pure scum
