Also take extreme care if you are in the middle lane alongside a left hand drive in the slow lane. Easily spotted by the downward facing door mirror on the RHS door. At that point you are in the blind spot and in danger of being side swiped if he pulls out.

Ryszard Masierak’s Scania allegedly came to a halt in the southbound slow lane of the M1 in Buckinghamshire before the accident early on Saturday.
A minibus taking a party of Indian tourists to London is believed to have collided with a second lorry as its driver attempted to avoid Masierak’s vehicle.
Eight people in the minibus killed; three more fighting for their lives.

sounds like the minibus driver had to make a choice between the hard shoulder or the middle lane to avoid the stationary lorry & unfortunately chose the wrong one.

Some extremely poor driving from the Pole (including being under the influence), allied to a freak set of circumstances in what must have been a relatively clear motorway.
Sometimes people just freeze when presented with such a situation. Years ago I was a passenger with my Dad driving, approaching Staples corner SB on the M1. The warning matrix flashed up to reduce speed etc. Often they're false alarms but this time there was actually a smash, centered on the middle lane. We could see it and there was plenty of time to avoide but unbelievably my Dad must have froze solid, and instead of moving to lane 1 or 3 stopped behind the smash in the middle lane! Cars were passing us, at top speed which felt like inches away and the wind from them was moving our car. I could see them coming in the wing mirror, swerving at the last second and I was literally screaming at my Dad to get out of there. Eventually he did, must have only been a minute but felt like a lifetime. I have never been so scared for my life before or since.
