It wouldn't be so bad if these students would be paying their loans back. The fact is that most won't so guess who will pick up the tab!
That's why all the election palavah about it costing £100 billion to cancel student debt is nonsense. That might be the nominal charge but much of it will never be repaid anyway. It is just an accounting fiction dressed up for political gain.

I thought a job was a job. You turned up on time, on point, worked hard and made your way up the corporate ladder.
Now apparently there are elite-persons 'graduate' jobs as opposed to the run-of-the-mill wave-slave drudge dished out to the imbeciles.
You live and (l)earn

Average student debt is rising to £50k. The current interest rate of interest for those earning £41k is 3% above the RPI. 15 yrs compounding at 3% is a lot of extra dosh. Many students will pay back more than the value of their actual debt. The interest on £50k will be over £2k at 3% + RPI. If you earn £41k you will pay back £1,800 a year, the real value of your debt has fallen by about £300, the nominal value has increased. In reality those paying more back in real terms may exceed the value of those that don't.
I agree with the OP. Far too many people are being encouraged to go to University when they shouldn't be. Far from picking up the tab, I think my generation have screwed the young. Not on purpose, but that is how things have turned out. Huge house prices, huge levels of student debt and voting to pull ourselves out of Europe.

I saw an IFA about a month ago. I explained that I had a pitiful projected pension mainly because there was no way I was investing in something that was hugely inflexible, and that when you reached retirement age, you had no option but to purchase an annuity. I said I thought the tax benefits were hugely over blown and only of real benefit to the very rich. I also said that I always thought the real reason for encouraging people to save for a pension was to reduce the burden on the welfare state and the country as a whole and not for the benefit of most individuals. I explained that I thought they should be compulsory, which they are now for employers. And also you are now no longer obliged to purchase an annuity.
The new way people are being led down the garden path for the benefit of the country and not the individual is by encouraging loads of people to go to university who shouldn't. Twenty and thirty years from now people will realise how much they've been screwed over.

As things stand if you have children, when you factor in child tax credits, housing benefit, child benefit, free school meals (income support, JSA or unilateral credit or whatever it currently is) the threshold at which you become better off working than not working is probably very close to the average wage (depending on how many children you have) That 9% of earnings that will be taken to pay off your student debt is going to hit very many graduate educated working families extremely hard.

Not half they haven't. Look at the kind of country the baby boomers were left after the war, and look at the kind of country they're leaving behind.
Far too many people now. A country completely ruined and split by mass immigration. And the worst is yet to come.
