Oh, I've eaten too much food in the last six months and piled the weight back on.
So I saw an article of intermittent fasting and have decided to try this madness.
After waking you don't eat for six hours. The idea is your body is in this repair cycle
when you were sleeping and by not eating you maintain the repair for the six hours
you are awake too. Then you eat within a 6-8 hour window(lean foods).
You are allowed drinks without sugar. (water?)

Has anyone tried this? any tips.. I'm on day one and I is sooo hungry.

I think it makes sense to reduce the window to your most active hours but you should start with a good breakfast and don't eat too late in the evening otherwise your body will store those calories.
I nearly always start with a good bowl of Scottish porridge (oats and water) with a handful of sultanas cooked in. Yummy.

This has been covered in previous threads.  Also referred to as 5:2.

In brief, I have done it for 9 months and steadily lost nearly 2 stone.

It isn't a hardship.  You just need a little will-power.

With respect to Foinavon, I find if I have breakfast i.e. before 9.00 , I am just as hungry at lunchtime, if not more.

I do agree that eating late is a recipe for disaster.
Report Jack Hacksaw • July 6, 2017 7:29 PM BST
Also, it will get easier...and don't do two fasting days in a row.
Report Jack Hacksaw • July 6, 2017 7:31 PM BST
And FFS it isn't really 'fasting.'

It just means you don't have breakfast or lunch but you can have a perfectly acceptable meal for 600 calories later in the day.  Get some low cal meal 300-400 cals from the supermarket and add loads of veg.

5-2 diet works for me and has done for the past 4 years.Started at 14stone and got down to 12 in no time at all.Put a bit back on when i laxed but back on it now and and back under 13stone and heading south.Intermittent is hard to do where as the 5-2 is far more manageable.Mon and Thurs are my two days.It helps if you skip brekky on those two days i find.Cup of tea mid morning and a salad for lunch another cup of tea mid afternoon and a fish dish for dinner(without spuds of course).Drink loads of water and it will soon be an EAT day.G/L

I've been doing the 5-2 for a couple of months and have lost nearly 2 stone - starting at 17st 9ib.

My fast days are Friday & Monday and I usually have a can of soup with added vegetables such as leek & potato soup poured over a couple of pre-cooked leeks & also plenty of fruit.

As Jack says it's not much of a hardship just a bit of will power. I've also realised that I was eating loads of junk before and I'm now eating much more healthily on my non fast days.
Report Jack Hacksaw • July 6, 2017 8:21 PM BST

I've been on a no sugar in food kick since long before it became fashionable. It means I don't eat almost all processed/prepared foods since they have added sugar. Otherwise I eat whatever I like, whenever I like, and have never had a weight problem. Want a filling breakfast? Have a boiled potato with your bacon and eggs. As I do every day.
Report bigmo • July 7, 2017 5:44 AM BST
It will work if you stick to it. I lost over 2 stone doing while on it. The thing that has really worked for me though is a low carb diet. As pxb has pointed out it's the carbs that get you. I've had no potatoes or rice for over a month now and can honestly say I haven't missed them.
I've changed my bread to Burgens Bread as it has less carbs in and easily find I'm happy with 4 slices a week. Breakfast now is usually strawberries etc with goats yoghurt.
I still drink though but have still lost a stone and a half. My blood pressure and blood sugar readings are now that of a normal healthy person.
But best of all I don't feel like I'm dieting and know I'll have no problem carrying on with it. This book is excellent for showing how many carbs in each food.

pxb has nailed it by excluding sugar.
Sugar is addictive and causes cravings.

When I was younger, if I felt peckish I'd eat a biscuit, and finish up by eating the whole packet. Then start on the cakes.

Now if I feel hungry between meals I eat an item of fruit or a few nuts and that does the trick.
Get the sugar out of your diet and you'll find losing weight a lot easier.

Otherwise i start fantasising about it. If I force myself to eat a lot, I get sick after about a week and any weight ive gained(at most a kilo) vanishes and im back at 47. Here's something else to consider if you care about your health:

Buy yourself a blood glucose meter.
Follow the instructions and take some readings.
Then see how far off from developing diabetes you are.

The normal range after fasting is  5 - 6.1
6.1 - 6.9 is pre diabetes.
Over that and you're in trouble.

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care/blood-sugar-level-ranges.html

The results might shock you into losing that weight and force you to develop good eating habits and to take some exercise.

High blood sugar is like slow poison, but you can help yourself before it gets too bad.

I work in a physical job 5 1/2 days a week. I never have lunch and quite often I skip brekkie too. It's all very odd as I don't get hungry. Still over 14stone which I'm happy enough with.

We're told regular exercise helps. It doesn't. Your body becoems more efficient as you get fitter and burns less fat. In some ways it increases weight due to musle toning.

Carbs and sugar are the enemies. An booze. Not in itself per se. More that the body processes it first (as it's a toxin) and neglects food digestion. That leads to food being stored as fat rather than broken down.

it's not losing weight.. it's keeping it off.

That's the problem with dieting. We have evolved to live thru feast and famine cycles, and put on weight during the good (food available) times in preparation for the lean times.

While it takes time, preparing and cooking your own food is the way to go. Make big batches and freeze portion sizes. There is some evidence that cooking your own food signals to your body that food is plentiful and there is no need to put on weight in preparation for lean times.

Otherwise, there is an awful lot of faddy nonsense out there about diet. Good luck.

Yes bigmo,

Dr Berg on YouTube who has made many videos on the subject of diet, maintains that the explosion in diabetes was caused by guidelines concerning fat in our diets.
This meant that fat got taken out of our diets and was replaced by carbs and sugar.

As the Atkins diet maintains - eat fat grow slim. The Atkins diet eliminates carbs as its base.
Report Dr Crippen • July 8, 2017 12:01 PM BST
When I say carbs I include sugar in that.
Report pxb • July 8, 2017 5:39 PM BST
I must admit, I am not convinced about carbs. Grains have been a major part of our ancestors diet since the invention of farming. Whereas sugar is a relatively recent addition, from 200 to 300 years ago when sugar cane was started to be grown extensively in the Americas.

Thus we have had roughly 10 times longer (10X more generations) to adapt to grains in our diet than sugar.

There are places where grains (wheat, rice) form a much larger percentage of people's diet than in the West and I am not aware of high levels of diabetes in these places.

I really like Dr.Berg, I first saw his videos about two years ago.
I cut carbs and sugar out a year 18 months ago and kept to it for a year.
but I hit a wall. After losing two stones. It's very powerful but I felt
i'd went too far. I lost all appetite for chocolate and sweets and even now
after going back to eating everything in the last six months I'm no longer
interested in chocolate much? that want is gone. It's the carbs which I consider
the bigger enemy. I like bread and it's been adulterated by Soy/soya flour.
I've cut bread out again. (was getting rolls without soya).
Dr Berg opened my eyes to taking calcium supplements, how dangerous they were.
He advocated lemon juice/cider vinegar/coconut oil to be incorporated into your
diet. But the extreme amount of green stuff he was asking people to eat for
potassium was a bone of contention, i messaged him about Calcium oxalate Build up
and he made a video about it? First time I think a doctor ever listened to me..
Carbs damaging villi in the intestines - He's good at explaining the core problem, but like every doctor on the internet he's pushing a line of products you don't really need. a good variety of foods does the same job.
Report zorrostrikes • July 9, 2017 4:22 AM BST
Mr Moonbeam -
It's not really fasting? As a young man I always skipped breakfast and would work to lunchtime before I ate. It's a return to that pattern?
My younger atheist self was a smarter chap in some things.
I cannot eat the same stuff he ate anymore? Being fifty now, I cannot
eat the volume anymore. My stomach acid is getting weaker. It comes with age.
It's what causes arthritis in the aged. The loss of the ability to take calcium
out of foods anymore. Strong acid is needed. Dr.Berg explains it(ytube).
Silica is very importante! Porridge oats(raw)best source I could find.

In the seventies,  I remember the Christians(the older generation) were fasting still. but they stopped it - some people fainted and it was discouraged.
In the bible the Pharisees reprimanded Jesus and his followers about not keeping to
the fasting day - Jesus told them to £$@* off , no , he told them nobody fasts while the bridegroom is at the wedding feast. that there was a time and place for fasting.
That they would return to fasting when he was gone.

zorro,

The standard test for blood glucose is done after fasting.
If for instance when you book an appointment and the test is to be done in the morning. They might tell you not to eat anything after 10pm the night before.

What they're measuring is your resistance to your own insulin.
A higher than normal reading means your insulin is not doing its job in bringing down the sugar in your blood, which if you carry on with your present lifestyle will get worse.
While a high enough reading means you're already diabetic.

Stage 1 diabetes is different, that's where you don't make insulin at all and you have to inject it or die.

zorro - i totally agree with you on marathon running. it kills the body. you're better off having a bit of muscle but you still need some cardio but those long distance runners are not healthy.
also agree road running is terrible for your joints. better to run through woods or on grass.
again find something that works for you. don't look outwards but look within for the answers.

when david blaine fasted for 45 days in that cube above the thames he lost 1lb per day and that was from eating nothing, but also no exercise , barely any movement.  i wouldn't advise extreme weight loss unless you are 30 stone but rather taper it back, make a few adjustments, once you see some improvement you'll be more motivated to keep going, but it all begins and ends with diet .  diet is 80%, exercise is 20%.

The next level would be to avoid all carbs and sugars. But I think I'll just continue
with this level for a month. I think it's working.

the hard part is the countdown? If you wake at eight, you don't eat till 2pm. (six hours away) so you wait for the alarm bell at two to grab some food. Stop at six. eat 2000 calories. At least it's regimented. it's all decided in advance. With grazing and eating food all the time you scramble for more and more food. It gets out of hand. the structure this supplies is very good.

It's amazing how we've all been led up the garden path over fat in our diets.

Before we went fat-free mad and replaced fat with carbs and sugar most people were slim.
Then a dubious report was published about fat clogging up our arteries and the world took note and ditched the fat for sugar and carbs.
We only have to look around at people to see the disaster that advice has been, and now the tests that advice were based on are under the cosh.
Of course the greatest danger to eating too many carbs and sugar is diabetes. It's no wonder everyone is getting it.
There are now studies showing that carbs and sugar are responsible for bad cholesterol and not fat.

About 24 minutes in, although I suggest anyone interested listens to the whole lecture.

According to that and many others like it, sugar and carbohydrates are the real dangers to health not fat.

More strong reasoning here that fat is not the culprit in the real cause of heart attacks.

Short-term weight loss is easy. Thousands of diets work well in the first year. Low-fat, high-fat, low-carb, grapefruit, M&M etc. Long-term weight loss is hard or even very hard. Stupid thing is that almost all scientific studies are short-term. Almost none of them have a duration of more than 18 months, so are completely pointless. Any professor who conducts a weight-loss study with a duration of less than 36 months should lose his/her academic title imo.

Anyway, happy to share with you how I have achieved long-term weight-loss... The thing which some of you might find annoying is that it was completely unintentional. I've never tried to lose weight. Once upon a time, more than 10 years ago, I had a BMI of 25 (borderline overweight). Now I have a BMI of 19 (borderline underweight). It appears there are no health benefits whatsoever for going from a BMI of 25 to 19, but it's nevertheless a quite substantial weight-loss.

Change#1: I stopped drinking sweet drinks (including fruit juice and artficially sweetened drinks, which are just as bad), and eating candy. I did this for dental reasons, not because I wanted to lose weight. It did however result in a substantial weight-loss, and that weight has stayed off ever since.

Change#2: A couple of years later I went vegetarian. Then I lost a bit more weight, and that weight has also stayed off.

Note that both changes I made have been permament, at least so far. I still don't drink sweet drinks, eat candy or animals. Everyone knows that sweet drinks including artificially sweetened drinks are associated with obesity right? So not much to say about that. On average vegetarians weigh a bit less than omnivores (and vegans even less), so maybe not surprising that I lost a bit weight when I gave up meat as well. A few things to note about my vegetarian diet: It's high in fiber (fruit, vegetables, legumes), and out of necessity I do much more cooking from scratch than what I did before. Eating lots of fiber is associated with lower body-weight, and lots of cooking from scratch means less highly processed crap, and you don't necessarily have to give up meat to make those changes. (In the unlikely event that I convince someone to go vegetarian - make sure you don't become deficient in vitamin B12! That happened to me, but it was discovered in a blood test before I noticed any seriously bad effects.)

Personally I think you should think about permanent healthy lifestyle changes that you can stick with if you want long-term results. Sad that there's so much conflicting advice about what's healthy. (Maybe take a look at what they eat in places where obesity isn't a big problem?) Better with small changes you can stick with than drastic changes that you find intolerable in the long run.

I wish you long-term success Zorro, and everyone else who is trying to lose weight!

guy in lecture said if you eat wrong... the body wraps the toxins
in fat and stores it away. if it's a natural food it can deal with it.
use it to build muscle and bone etc.
when you do burn fat in a diet you release the stored toxic stuff, and
you feel lousy - that's why diets usually fail. ?

ufcdan, well done.

You'd better believe what you did was correct, and that carbs and sugar are the killers as far as diabetes is concerned.

Remember insulin resistance is what Stage 2 diabetes is all about.
Diabetics have to produce more and more insulin because it isn't doing its job and the blood sugar remains high.
Simply giving patients medication to bring down blood sugar simply makes the condition worse if they continue eating carbs and sugar.
Which can lead to full blown Stage 1 diabetes.

Fat does not trigger insulin. Yes that is correct, eat as much as you like.

So simply cut out the carbs and sugar and your blood sugar count comes down.

Why isn't this information given out by GPs?

The answer is that they're controlled by the pharmaceuticals and there's no profit in curing people.
Producing drugs that manage health conditions are the perfect business. You never lose your customers.
Except when they die.

i'd reiterate what Mr A says...

Don't start or try and 'diet' that you can't see yourself continuing for the rest of your life.

And, have a look at what fat people have in their supermarket trolleys and have a look at what slim people have in their supermarket baskets.

Laugh

I'm making lamb curry with potatos and cauliflower. 2 of my favourite vegetables. That's about all you need to know. Cook stuff you like.

i have a nephew who never eats eggs?
I think it's mad, as french toast(eggy bread) is my favourite thing.
with bacon and hp, it's a gluttony thing.

some egg gets past him, as his mom makes fried fish with breading and egg is used
to stick the breading. mayo has egg too.

It's nuts how people develop aversions to certain foods.

i hate garden peas but would eat them to be polite.

i've never ate sushi as i don't want parasites.
and the fish is coming from Asia?

Well, I just had smoked haddock a few small potatoes and some frozen veg.  Did I enjoy it?  Not the veg.

A bit peckish again now but tomorrow is another day.

Nature has played a dirty trick  on humans, all the stuff we hardly need like sugar and carbs tastes great and we crave it. While veg which we do need and does us good tastes bland and gets left on our plates.
Or boiled to death so there's nothing left except mush.

Lots of people have food aversions, Zorro. I never drink milk or eat butter and am none the worse for it. Milk is fatty and sweet and could be from where the love of sweetened fatty foods like chocolate and cake originated. I don't eat those either.
I don't think it essential to eat a lot of green leafy food if one compensates with plenty of fruit. Personally I love cabbage and root vegetables as well as all types of fruit.

Losing weight is a mental challenge.  The physical solution is simple.  Eat a better diet (more protein, fruit and veg, less sugar, fat and carbs) and exercise more.

I'd advise trying ostrich fillet.  It's expensive at £20 a kilo, but it's only 2% fat and super filling.  After a nice steak it's my second favourite meat.  It's particularly nice with fries, but you can just cook it with onions and salad and swerve the fries.  You'll be amazed how filling it is and there is no waste, so even though it's expensive you don't need that much.

because the leaner the cut of meat the more weight you will lose / the less weight you will gain.
