Which English county has the longest coastline?
Report morpteh mackem • November 8, 2016 12:04 PM GMT
cornwall
Report i_agree_with_nick • November 8, 2016 12:05 PM GMT
Not Cornwall.
Report scandanavian_haven • November 8, 2016 12:25 PM GMT
I know the answer because I'm a google cheat so wont say what it is, but looking at the map of the English counties I can't see it, looks like a few have a longer coastline
Report Franzi • November 8, 2016 12:38 PM GMT
Coastline lengths are hard to pin down - it depends how closely you measure them. This is a classic paradox which is explained by fractal dimension, and is true for many geographical boundaries.

In this case, knowing the answer which is expected, it is likely a very precise measurement of every nook and cranny would return the crown to the more obvious answer. This is because the expected answer has a 'smoother' coastline than Cornwall.
Report i_agree_with_nick • November 8, 2016 12:43 PM GMT
That's a good point, Franzi.
Report i_agree_with_nick • November 8, 2016 12:49 PM GMT
The answer is Essex. btw.

I would have guessed Cornwall or Kent but going back to what SH said, I think that can be answered partly by Franzi's point. I guess there's also the question of where does the Thames Estuary become the sea?
Report scandanavian_haven • November 8, 2016 1:10 PM GMT
My answer would have been Devon, a fairly long north and south coastline, but I guess logically Franzi would be correct if that is actually the case, you'd never have got the answer though by looking at the map

Report blackbarn • November 8, 2016 2:11 PM GMT
This question is a regular Trivia Quiz nightmare - I only ever used it onceCry

Re County coastlines.  Several sources quote Cornwall as 420/422 miles and several sources quote Essex at 350/360 INCLUDING sources that state authoritatively that Essex is the longest.  I absolutely agree with the point about scale but imo the smaller the scale used the more likely it is that the answer is Cornwall.

Where does the coastline end and an estuary begin?

What is the difference between a river and an estuary?

Salt water.

Isle of Wight ... coastline goes on forever.

Right.

Does that show on the maps they use to measure coastlines?

Report i_agree_with_nick • November 8, 2016 3:28 PM GMT
The point about the river/estuary issue is that it's not obvious when looking at a map.
