.. because I've had a chunky bet on it.  Can you think of a better reason?  Of course you can't.

Having grown up with the EU project I feel qualified to pass comment.  I look on it fondly, like an errant younger brother - slightly deranged and prone to exposing itself to strangers, but family all the same  The founders of the proto-EU, starting with Jean Monnet's 1951 European Iron and Steel Community (and many past/passed UK politicians who favoured joining), saw first-hand the horrors wreaked on Europe by WW2.  They sought to join France and Germany inextricably to avoid a fourth Franco-German war in less than a century.  Sadly these principled men have been replaced by self-serving bureaucrats who seek only to increase their power/influence while ensuring they are well rewarded for carrying out 'god's work'.

This is not a referendum to leave Europe.  We have never been more European in our outlook.  There is no reason why we cannot cooperate and maintain good relations with the remaining EU countries.  It is about leaving the stifling and ultimately destructive bureaucracy of the EU project (there are 170,000 pages of the Community Acquis, the accumulated legislation, legal acts, and court decisions which constitute the body of EU law).  The EU is arrogant, elitist, rigid, wasteful, tolerates corruption and is more concerned with its own survival than the benefit of the people it's supposed to represent.  Certainly, it is the main reason European productivity is falling behind most of the rest of the world.  It increasingly resembles the old USSR or, in terms of racial, religious and linguistic diversity, the former Yugoslavia.  And we know how they turned out.  It is deeply anti-democratic, and although democracy is pretty rubbish, it's the least worst system of government.  Voting to stay under the control of Brussels isn't the ethically superior choice, it's the choice of someone who has little understanding of reality.  tbc

Bodil  - apologies for contacting you like this, but I've been asked to do so by a most distinguished former contributor this Forum, a man once associated with the Borough of Newham no less, admittedly in happier times.

He's asked me to tell you that he's copied and pasted some of your very wise words onto various other online places such as Facebook.  He hasn't tried to pass off the material as his own, but notified potential readers that your words are the work of a "very clever man who shall remain nameless". (His verbatim quote).

Over and out.

Odds and sods.

The open borders of the Schengen zone are a gift to organized crime and terrorists.  The smarter criminals come to the richest countries, which includes us.  Thanks to our weakened/liberalized police/legal systems, they are having an increased impact on our crime figures. I've seen articles from our indigenous crime families complaining about the ruthlessness of the newcomers.  The European Convention on Human Rights prevents us from deporting many dangerous criminals (though to be fair, our own legal system cheerfully takes loads of money to protect the rights of the offender (less keen on the victims)).  Unless there is an active arrest warrant out, we have to let in known criminals.

To regain full control of our borders we have to leave the SM/EU.  The migration crisis cannot be solved within the EU.  Merkel arbitrarily broke the Dublin agreement (asylum seekers remain in the (safe) countries in they first registered) to admit a million Middle Eastern refugees.  It's been estimated that they will each bring in 4 to 8 family members.  Once granted citizenship they can move anywhere in the EU.  The second-language of the vast majority is English, and all major groups already have substantial populations in the UK. And remember, we get migrants from all sides of every conflict, not just the innocent bystanders.  As an aside, the older 'uns on here will remember when the Tamil Tigers of Sri Lanka were largely funded by credit card fraud at UK filling stations.  Well, the Sinhalese (also here in significant numbers) solved their local inter-racial spat by herding the Tamils (introduced by the British to pick tea) into a corner of the island and shelling the hell out of them.  As a species we do tend to violent solutions.

sofia, I was hoping that you were going to tell me that Scotland will leave the UK if we vote to go.  So I'll pretend that you did anyway.

According to the Petroleum Exploration Society of GB bulletins, just 16 exploration/development wells will be drilled this year, the lowest for decades.  Decommissioning costs (removal of wells/installations) are estimated to be around £58 billion, mostly to be paid by the UK (or Scottish) government.  With tax breaks etc, UK income from the North Sea this year is going to be about minus £1 billion, so I recall reading.  You really dodged the bullet by voting to remain.  The Scots are too smart to vote out again.  They elect the SNP because they know - correctly - they will extract the maximum from the English.  Meanwhile the SNP elected cohorts are in the process of showing themselves to be just as corrupt, venal, sexually depraved and prone to substance abuse and violence as any other political party.  It was good while the dream lasted.

Must get back to the serious stuff.
Report bodil • June 23, 2016 1:19 AM BST
Will the Brussels' bureaucracy try to punish us for leaving?  Hell, yes. If we make a success of it then EU will break up - at least the main contributors will take their money elsewhere.  The form of punishment? Well they could put tariffs up on what we sell to them, but since we run a massive trade deficit with them - we import some £68 billion (and rising; in 2015 the total EU current account surplus with the UK was £107 billion) more goods from them than we sell to them, the power lies with us.  The exporting countries will slap Brussels down.  We are the largest overseas market for German cars - the German manufacturers will ensure a smooth transition.  They are among the most effective Brussels' lobbyists (how else did they get away with killing people with diesel exhaust emissions for so long? - note the scandal broke in the US, not in Europe; and figures out today show the emissions are even more lethal than previously calculated).  The EU needs London as a financial centre, it does 80% of EU capital markets business.

The Remain camp keep saying "inside a reformed EU ..."  But the EU is almost constitutionally incapable of flexibility/reform.  It faces an existential threat from Brexit but in October 2014 Cameron was presented with a surprise bill for £1.7 billion, much to his fury (and much s****ing in Brussels), and when he negotiated in February for a new relationship with the EU, he was given no significant concessions (although to be fair, he didn't actually ask for any). His deal was all smoke and mirrors with nothing legally binding.   The bureaucracy of the EU is massively wasteful and incompetent (and often corrupt)and excels only in demonstrating a hunger for centralised power and personal advancement/reward.

In the interests of fairness, I can think of one positive change the EU made, concerning fishing(aka the ruthless plundering of the UK's seas by the continentals, principally the Spanish).  Thanks to Hugh Fearnley-W.etc, they abandoned their policy of discards.  But it did take them 30 years to do the bleedin' obvious, and it's calculated enough fish to supply the UK's fish and chip shops for 300 years were wasted in that time.

I didn't see it but I heard about it. Obviously she meant well, but got it wrong from what I can gather.

I'm guided by the CEO of Compassion In World Farming on this.

In our fight against live exports, we have been told time and again that since animals are legally considered ‘goods’, it would be unlawful under EU regulations to ban the trade of live animals. And yet, if we left the EU, the trade would most likely continue. Indeed, trade between the UK and member states would then be governed by World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules, which, just like the EU regulations, prohibit trade restrictions on ‘goods’. Therefore, any attempt to ban live exports could face a challenge by the WTO, and without strong political will to see an end to the trade, any such move would be unlikely.

For 21 consecutive years the European Court of Auditors has refused to sign off on the EU budget.  In 2014 they stated that 134 billion euros of EU budget payments were affected by material error.  Too much money is wasted or siphoned off by criminals.  In 2015 the EU's own anti-fraud watchdog found 670 million euros were lost to fraud, mostly in Romania, Bugaria and Hungary (only 1 of the 139 inquiries concluded in 2015 concerned the UK).  Just this week it emerged that the Hungarian PM Viktor Orban spent 2 million euros from the EU building a vintage railway line between his 2 childhood villages where his family and business associates own many properties. It was supposed to have up to 7000 passengers a day but in the first month the daily average was 1. But, hey!, it's EU money so why care about waste, mismanagement and value for money?

Will hope triumph over fear tomorrow?   I have to say this has been the most vitriolic and bizarre campaign I can recall.  What has been most shocking is the consistently negative and scaremongering tactics of Cameron and Osborne - between them they have threatened World War 3, mass unemployment, international isolation, collapse of the pound, destruction of pensions, collapse of living standards and the NHS, fragmentation of the UK, and assorted plagues - and all with the aim of saving their own political careers. Vote out and you can get rid of the latter pair - how can you resist? And if the present bunch of politicians don't deal with mass immigration, eventually we will elect people who will. That could turn out really badly.

There's no point in voting with the controlling financial/political elite to remain, unless you are one of them (as you may have guessed, I never did get that phone call).  You really feel an affinity with Blair, Browne, Major, Goldman-Sachs, the "Labour" London elite, J P Morgan, the IMF, the World Bank, Michael O'Leary, the G7 Central Bankers, the CBI, Cameron and the vampire Osborne?  Well, do ya, punk?
