I did this thread years ago, but can anyone remember what the Nazis called themselves in war films and in reality too? What did they (the Nazis) call the Nazi reign?

Political 'Nazis' or Military 'Nazis'?

A fair difference

Mmmm...well, let's just ask, what did Hitler call the damned thing?
Report Velasquez • June 6, 2016 10:48 PM BST
He called it the THIRD REICH, didn't he? The THIRD Reich...

Which then begs the question...

I thought this thread would be about the dilemma of the director.
Germans speaking German with subtitles, or English with comedy accents.

I watched a bit of some dreadful war film the other day with Gordon Jackson playing a German officer and he still spoke in English. Laugh

"Aye, Sieg Heil Laddie!"

The point I'm trying to make is this : We all heard that phrase dozens of times, but no-one ever seems to ask, "Hang on...the THIRD Reich...? What were the FIRST and SECOND Reichs??"
Report mad mad moon • June 6, 2016 11:17 PM BST
I hope the German Gordon Jackson didn't fall for the old "Goot luck" routine.

The Fatherland was used from time to time.

The second Reich was from 1871 (German unification) to 1918.

The first Reich was (I think) the Holy Roman Empire which ended in the 1600's.

Yup, Nick, and the so called Holy Roman Empire was a huge confederation of European states much like the EU, with Germanic states at its core...the HRE lasted for about 1000 years too, which was Hitler's boast.

Hardly any British person thinks about this as it is HISTORY FROM THE GERMAN VIEWPOINT.

Good point from Dunlaying...forgot about that.

So...eh...and THIS is the punchline, like...is the European Union the FOURTH Reich...? Joost askin', like...Mischief

americans use homeland rather than fatherland? eagle as emblem. senate and republic like rome. all their posh buildings roman/greek architecture. latin laws.
permeates the whole fabric of the country. other countries too.

the royal families of europe use eagle emblem.
the drama fall of eagles tells the story of their demise.
russia had double eagle - related to victoria and the queen.

First Reich (962-1806). Second Reich (1871-1918)
