Kenny - Out of sensitivity to your sensitivies, I will limit my comments - as you know shooting deer in appropriate season is entirely legal. And any idiot (not you) who thinks that fence represents a deer-proof pen/trap may be a little short of knowledge of the subject.

Kenny - I agree - it is not something you'd have your photo taken with as some major achievement. But your culling "I don't know if they do" and "maybe even necessary" illustrates your continuing and alarming lack of knowledge of the countryside. Still we've been here before Hey-ho

"maye even necessary",was just to wind you up, lol. The point of the thread is why the hell look so smug and happy when you have killed a beautiful creature.

Kenny - the wind up would be believable IF you hadn't posted "I don't know even if they do" need culling, about 30 minutes before that post. Anyway here's an educational thread to help you. It is not a huntin, shootin.fishin site, tis the one the RSPB refers you to because they can't post anything deer negative themselves for fear of upsetting their "regulars"

Read the article on it and he is pleased with his kill so it seems, although it comes across to me that this was a ill thought out PR exercise, he talks a lot about not being a soft touch and needing to be hard to get to the top, think it was taken before the Ashes? maybe trying to send out some kind of subliminal message that he is not easy target and the meek choir boy he's perceived as.
Still, anyone with a grain of sense wouldn't pose with dead animals, especially one in the public eye.
I put it down to naivety and bad advice, if it was a habit, it would be different.

"I don't even know if they do",was actually true, because there are arguments for and against which I read about before starting the thread, although it would appear that culling is necessary in certain areas, A lot of people advocate fencing as an alternative to killing.I'll have a look at the video later, thanks.

Scandi - I haven't seen the article, and I see little wrong with a trophy shot of legal game. HOWEVER, I do agree that if the rationale for the shot was as you describe, it was ill-conceived as a profile enhancement exercise. Didn't Botham do something similar (not sure why he needed it) apart from the long walk of course.

Kenny - Re fencing - if you have a deer sensitive crop, as my neighbour does (Vineyard) and I do (Cider orchard) this is an option but it is hugely expensive (and visually very intrusive) because of the required height. BUT that is not the big issue, much more important is the impact on the natural regeneration of woodland (particularly ancient) of which we have a lot here in the South Downs National Park. The link I gave you has lots of info on this, and the impact of deer.

On a culinary note, may I just recommend the liver of the Chinese Water Deer, it is nearly on a par with Roe. (Well the venison is good too). Just in case anyone is interested.

I know but it does seem like a image thing to me to shake off his squeaky clean persona, rifle, blood, death probably seemed like a good idea to him at the time, idk.

scandi - Gotcha, but honest guv - my 22.51 post is in all sincerity. The deer at Alistair's feet IS a Chinese Water Deer, and despite being an introduction to this country is great eating, and the liver is particularly good. Venison Liver (particularly Roe and Fallow) is seriously good - at least on a par or better than calves liver. Just ask your butcher if you don't believe me.

Glad for you Kenny. What beans and where from? Halfway round the world I guess, unless you've splashed out on early English Broadies. . Any info on the pain tolerances of these beans, all that travel this time of year must be a real chore. I am going to be harvesting mine soon, unless the deer get over the fences.

A self-confessed country boy, Alastair enjoys working on his father-in-law’s farm and shooting on his days off from the game.
Alastair said: “Deer stalking is a release from cricket and I love being in the outdoors. I’m proud to be a member of the UK hunting community and I’m keen to learn the effects of deer management through my guide Alex Hinkins of Wings Hunting & Shooting.”
“We had a fantastic trip to Norfolk and I’m already looking forward to my next outing.”
Looking forward to it!!!! Sick bastard.

Gosh Kenny, your double standards know no end. Food miles are now an irrelevance to you, local produce an anathema, and vegetable travel cruelty knows no bounds. Your credibility is shot (sorry - humanely dispatched).

There's not much skill in shooting something as big as a deer from close range.
So I can't see what he's looking so pleased about.
Perhaps he just enjoys killing animals?
Must have a screw loose if that's the case.

Crippen - Why post on something you known nothing about?.......
This is a little deer, adults about 20 inches high. They are quite hard to shoot, which is a bit of a bu gg er since this imported species has absolutely no place in the British countryside.

same folk who pay to kill animals to preserve them long term could easily cough up same money to relocate them to where all could enjoy, or failing that they could be managed so as the population doesnt increase to a level whereby we need to kill them.
anybody posing having killed anything for fun has to be a bit lacking somewhere

Our cricket team need to salvage a bit of pride so a belated contribution from Cook is still welcome.
I don't approve of anyone killing animals for fun but I can appreciate his batting and fielding skills.

He's on the wane admittedly, but who have we got to replace him in the slips? It won't be long now before he is "advised" to call it a day. I'm taking your advice regarding the meds, KoD.

Pity Phil Sharpe, isn't available, Foinavon. The greatest slip fielder I ever saw, and a Yorkshireman. My brother in laws brother played in the same Yorkshire side as him.
