100 years ago this w/end

Britain had ruled the waves since Nelson spanked the Spanish and French in 1805 ,but new tech in armour ,guns and shells were tested and although the outcome was not definate ,had Britain lost the first world war would have been all but over .

see some much needed insight into this Naval Battle and hopefully see some footage from the time

My grandfather was on a ship in the battle of Jutland, can't remember which ship he was on though. I do know that he then served on HMS Renown for the rest of the war, but Renown didn't get involved in any action.

Latest high technology Battleships - crewed by hundreds of men and boys who came from home that did not even have electricity.

No wonder so many mistakes were made.

The BBC will probably try and spin it that ye lost the Battle Of Jutland,ye didnt.

Don't much like the idea of ' replicating' action scenarios to give you a realistic idea of what it would have been like at the time,
No it doesn't , you weren't there, so have no idea of what it was really like.

Seemed laboured to me and repeated many of the ideas given in last week's programme. More a jolly for Snow and his female sidekick than anything else although the brief visit to the American dreadnought was interesting.

Facts would have been cheering on them Germans.

He definitely would have claimed the Germans won the battle.
Report ebulGery • May 29, 2016 11:09 PM BST
I missed it, I will look out for the replay.

I don't think we lost the battle, it was indecisive but we certainly did not do well, some of our tactics were a little out of date.

Such as putting rate of fire before accuracy of fire, shells outside gun turrets was not too good either.
I will watch before commenting further.

The battle did enough to stop the Germans challenging us with ships again, in that sense we won.
Report johnizere • May 29, 2016 11:41 PM BST
I remember my grandfather telling me some bits about the battle (Jutland).
He was a stoker, so didn't get to see much, if any, of the action.
He told me about the tremendous noise as the guns were fired, and the ship used to list violently when they were firing, that's the power of those guns when they were going off. I think he must have been around 17/18 or so at the time, iirc he was born 1899.
some way to spend your youth?
Report akabula • May 29, 2016 11:45 PM BST
I think it must have been worse for people like your grandfather than those ondeck.
Every noise and every violent movement must have brought fear.
Report johnizere • May 29, 2016 11:54 PM BST
Correct akabula, must have been pretty scary down below.

German gunnery was somewhat superior - think Leitz and Zeiss.  But the big difference was the suicidal continuous powder trains from magazine to turret in the British ships, where faster rate of fire was a fetish - all blast doors open to speed things up. Probably the same thing happened to the Hood in WW2 (though the wooden decks wouldn't have helped). The strategic function of the Grand Fleet was a total blockade of Germany.  This was never broken and around 750,000 Germans may have starved to death (and I doubt they've forgotten) - which led to collapse in morale of front-line troops.  The German High Seas Fleet was ordered to a Death or Glory mission in 1918 and promptly mutinied.  So it was a British victory, albeit costly.
