I wouldn't eat at a restaurant that serves Halal meat.
And I wouldn't buy any Halal meat product from a supermarket.

Good point Ron...that's baffled me for years - just why are they more interested in a few cracks of the whip in horse-racing whilst turning a blind eye to this barbarism?

There's no mileage in posting what I'd really like to say as I'd have my collar felt by the filth at my door within a few hours - and such an incident WOULD make the news...unlike the stories the media are so keen to airbrush.

The reason there is little complaint is firstly because the public have little or no solid view on how their meat is produced - "two chickens for a fiver etc".

The reason the animal protection lobby dont care is that they are persuaded (for right or wrong) that ritual slaughter (Halal or Schechite) is literally a dying practice; Even the RSPCA concede that between 85 and 90% of ritual slaughter is now pre-stunned.  They dont care from then on because the religious processes from then on are virtually identical to the normal slaughter process. In short they dont care that the killer has a funny hat, a curved knife and utters religious "utterences" cos by then its immaterial to the animal.

Just one final observation, these debates always focus on Halal, no doubt because the Muslim faith is uppermost in the minds of many, but in this respect the Jewish faith is pretty much synonymous,  with its own version of ritual slaughter.

Countries in which animals must be stunned right after the cut include Latvia, Estonia, Finland, the Lower Austria province.
Countries that impose stunning before slaughter comprise Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Denmark, and Sweden.

Ron - countries are all over the place on this issue. You can google which ones ban both, which ones ban one or the other, and which ones have variations on a theme. like stunning after the throat slitting. The UK of course allows gassing of poultry without pre-stunning which would be prohibited under the halal or schechita processes.

I'd eat halal killed chicken over supermarket gassed chicken every time.

I do think though that all NOT pre-stunned meat should be marked as such, to give the consumer a choice.  This would, assuming the public care, result in a growth in demand for halal and shechita killed chicken.  Funny old world.

HALAL

Halal slaughtering involves cutting through the large arteries in the neck with one swipe of a blade, while a Muslim butcher recites a religious verse.
All blood is then drained away since the consumption of blood is forbidden under Islamic law.
Under Islamic law, an animal must be slaughtered by having its throat cut while it is conscious.


KOSHER

According to the laws, in order for a meat to kosher it must come from an animal that means the kosher rules.
These are the animal must be ruminant and have split hooves. Ruminant animals chew food once and swallow, before regurgitating it and chewing again.
Animals that Jews can eat include cows, sheep, goats and deer.
They cannot eat pigs despite the fact it has split hooves because it is not a ruminant animal.
Before slaughtering, the animal must be healthy and uninjured and a sharp knife is used to slice through the main arteries and windpipe, causing a drop in blood pressure that causes the animal to lose consciousness. Jews believe this is a way of killing that shows 'respect and compassion' as set out in Jewish law

HOW MANY ANIMALS ARE KILLED in uk?

The total number of animals killed in British slaughterhouses in 2013 was over a billion.

This included 9.8 million pigs, nearly 15 million sheep, 18 million turkeys, 14 million ducks, over 945 million chickens and 2.6 million cattle. Add to that 4.5 billion fish and 2.6 billion shellfish you have a total of over 8 billion animals killed in the UK each year.

This equates to around 22 million animals slaughtered every day; 919,000 an hour; 15,000 per minute and 255 every second.
