TONY Blair “underestimated” the consequences of waging war in Iraq in a move which led to the rise of Daesh, he admitted yesterday.

The former prime minister conceded the 2003 invasion to topple Saddam Hussain had contributed to the growth of the Islamist terror group at an event in Westminster yesterday.

The long-delayed Chilcot report is expected to be heavily critical of Blair on its release in July.

Yesterday Blair said he failed to appreciate the complexities of the region when he committed British troops to the bloody war, which led to the deaths of 179 service personnel and thousands of civilians.

The ex-Labour leader said: “We underestimated profoundly the forces that were at work in the region and would take advantage of change once you topple the regime. That is the lesson.

“The lesson is simple. It is that when you remove a dictatorship out come these forces of destabilisation, whether it is al Qaeda on the Sunni side or Iran and its militia on the Shia side.”

Blair went on: “To be honest, my understanding of the Middle East is a lot deeper today than it was when I was prime minister.”

"To be honest"?  That coont wouldn't know honesty if it kicked him in the mush.

Sooner Bliar appears in front of the Hague, the better, imo.  I'm not talking William, btw!

Corbyn wants him charged with war crimes, i suspect Dr David Kellys wife does as well
Report ebulGery • May 25, 2016 2:25 PM BST
So incompetence is going to be his defence.

It is not good enoughAngry, a lot of people told him he was wrong at the time.

Not only are there the death's from the invasion. But there is also the appalling death toll which has happened since in Iraq because there is

no strong leader to keep these guys in check...which is what Arabs need.

N.Iraq is still not under control, because of ISISSad.

I agree with Corbyn.

Pipe down you mugs, nobody warned or suspected the dangers of deposing a murderous dictator and giving the chance of freedom and democract to Iraq.
Blair was a good man but naive in that he underestimated the true levels of barbaric madness in that region.

Once a dictator is deposed the reasponsibility then falls on the citizens of that country to build a successful and democratic country.
They cannot expect America and Britain to hold their hands, many countries have followed this path and they must do so also.

Iraq has a population of 30-40 million. It is potentially one of the wealthiest countries in the world. How many of its citizens have joined the Iraq military to serve their country and fight for peace and freedom?

We had no right to remove Saddam..that is up to the citizens of that country.

People were told he threatened us with weapons of mass destruction....that was a lie.

Because of that a large number of humans beings are now dead and maimed, that is where my sympathy lies.
Report ebulGery • May 25, 2016 8:38 PM BST
I think countries have to right to expect America and Britain not to invade their countries.

Countries have a right to their own sovereignty, or we might as well justify Adolf Hitler?

Report jollyswagman • May 30, 2016 4:19 PM BST
who remembers him in the room full of schoolchildren? he looked as mad as sadam.

he should be on trial for what he did imo.

what also bugs me is that i often drive past his house in london and you know when he's about because there are armed police officers outside his front door. we pay for his protection for the rest of his life even though he's made a fortune for himself.

i wonder what people in the middle east thought when they found out he was going to be a peace envoy?
