Thinking about taking up Microsoft's upgrade to Win 10 but concerned about what would happen if I get the BSOD. How can I format and reinstall if I have no disk?

Alternatively would I be able to reinstall Win 7?

Thanks.

Also if I bought a machine running Win 10 would I be able to "downgrade" it to Win 7 easily?

Cheers.

Does your laptop (I presume) not have a recovery partition of the original operating system?
Also microsoft allow you to download the ISO disk image of your current operating system for recovery purposes that you can download first then burn to a DVD. I've had to do this, if I were you I'd do that first. I know your fear, when windows 8.0 forced me to go to 8.1 (no cancel option) - the screen took on a blue shade for a few hours of grief :(

pretty sure there's a rollback available by default.

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/windows/how-downgrade-windows-10-uninstall-win-10-reinstall-windows-7-8-summary-3633149/

the real question is why do you want to upgrade to windows 10 when support for 7 doesn't end for another 5 years.

Sick of all the promoting of Windows 10 I finally gave up and got it!

Now, if I was just a recreation type of user I could have lived with spending a week trying to get my old head around it.

Unfortunately I'm not, and despite their blagging about how easy and familiar everything is, that is far from the truth.

I uninstalled and reverted to seven after just one day.

Best advice is to leave the fekking thing alone imo!

How did you revert to 7 AP? I have driver issues with Windows 8 that can only be resolved by downgrading to 7.

Microsoft WTF

Windows 7 v good imo and works very well for me, but no, Microsoft .... if it ain't broke, fix it til it is, they says.

So they fixed it with 8 and now 10. wow, genius.

I'm no expert, in fact far from it so just follow what I think is good advice.

This is the route I took and it was simple even for me....
.
If you’ve upgraded a PC to Windows 10 — not performed a clean install, but an upgrade — you’ll have an easy option that lets you revert to the last version of Windows. To access this, open the Start menu and select Settings. Click the “Update & security” icon and select “Recovery.”

You should see a “Go back to Windows 7” or “Go back to Windows 8.1” option. Click the Get started button to get rid of your Windows 10 install and restore your previous Windows install. Microsoft will ask you why you want to go back.

If it’s been over a month — or if you’ve run the DIsk cleanup tool and removed the “Previous Windows installations” files or deleted the C:\Windows.old folder by hand — you’ll no longer see this option. Windows 10 appears to automatically remove the old Windows installation files after a month to free up space.

I've not used 10, will do so soon probably, I don't like 8, far prefer 7, but they say 10 is better than 8.

Re reverting, that's all well and good aunty if it's working, if it blue screens you're ****ed, I was so annoyed when 8.1 did that to me. The ars*holes had even removed the Function Key boot way to get into recovery as that saves like 1/2 a second off boot time, so trying to get into the emergency boot options was a nightmare.

There are a bunch of tools working at Microsoft these days, no common sense at all.

This thread was a good read.
I've stuck with Windows 7 as Microsoft never explained why 10 is better.
Their sales pitch is "you'll love it, it's great".  Why is it better?

I think the guys at microsoft are so arrogant they think nothing they do can go wrong and if it does it's the users fault.

If you were a little old lady and your computer one day force upgraded windows and self-f**ked-itself to a blue screen, it's not your fault, it's microsoft's fault, but they are soo ****ing arrogant, they won't see it that way.

And the little old lady isn't going to be able to fix it so will have to go to a computer shop or with luck have a geeky relative. If she's lucky.

They annoy me, can you tell? Laugh

Had 10 since it come out, i've had no problems at
all with it - was just an upgrade from 8 but runs very smoothly

My monitor isn't at full resolution and the drivers only supports W7. W8 won't let me install them even though I know they work. The only thing I can think of doing is to downgrade, install the drivers and then upgrade again. I need to wipe my PC as it's full of junk but I'm wary of doing a fresh W7 install in case my W8 key doesn't work.

Thanks for your help.

i somewhat foolishly updated my display driver software and management application this week ( i hadn't done it for 3 years and a small problem with some new software had popped up so i thought maybe an upgrade will fix it) and spent a day trying to fix problems which came with the upgrade (and it didn't fix the problem i was trying to fix). I just ended up rolling back to the old versions.

The volume of money burnt installing non critical upgrades and dealing with the fallout is probably one of the largest expenses in IT wrt to benefit delivered.

I strongly believe we're not too far away from companies binning SaaS, and bringing hardware and software back in house and refusing to upgrade anything if it's fit for purpose.

It will take one big bluechip to do it.

Oh, what was your support cost this year for your major enterprise apps.

F*ck all. Nothing. zada. nilch.

WHAT? How did you achieve that?

we did nothing, because nothing was broken.

ask yourself why it's free and then familiarise yourself with how to switch off all the data harvesting.

It's funny isn't it, the thinking seems to be

"You liked windows 7, but like everyone thought 8 was sh*t, and we didn't listen even to anyone about it?
Worry no more! We've finally listened and brought out 10, which is .. a bit more like 7 again. 7 years after 7 came out".

Only reason I'd be tempted by 10 is if the integration with the phone was fantastic - if I had one, and I don't.

Thanks for the info and advice guys.

Difficulty is my trusty old laptop seems to be coming to the end of it's life and the only replacements I have so far found offering the spec I want at a price I want to pay all have Win 10 pre-installed.

Being a confirmed Luddite I don't really want to "upgrade". Was perfectly happy with Win 2000!
Report Just Checking • March 5, 2016 8:16 PM GMT
do you have lots of old hardware like scanners/printers etc that you'd be annoyed if you couldn't use if you couldn't get drivers?
Report Ovalman. • March 5, 2016 8:49 PM GMT
erm yes?
Report Just Checking • March 5, 2016 8:54 PM GMT
Well that can be the issue. If it's old you might be able to get a 32 bit driver but the real chaos begins with an oldish product and if you get 64 bit windows and there was never a 64 bit driver.

I'd maybe search google for

My product 1234 and windows 10

and see if other people are already complaining about it.
