Why haven't the extreme right wing bombed a mosque then?

Again your lack of historical knowledge lets you down. There is no "extreme" right worth talking about in this country. A cup of tea and a dust up is about as extreme as we as a people get. That's the British way.

Bombing a mosque is just further illustration you are away with the fairies.

Report Just Checking • February 6, 2016 9:16 PM GMT
We saw how lefties answer that sort of difficult question after cologne, which was:
"There are s*x assaults by white western men, therefore if non white men do it, it's no different, and to point out that there is vastly high incidence of it among them, or that this sort of incident was completely new in Europe, or it's indemic to their culture, that makes you a racist."

Which is a bit like saying that "there are always fights and sometimes on Saturdays, therefore football hooliganism was never a problem" or 1,000,000 other anologies you could draw to demonstrate how f***ing thick many on the left are.
Report Eeternaloptimist • February 6, 2016 9:44 PM GMT
Just back up a little there Leopard. Ours isn't a country which by it's nature and once again history has reached for banning in framing how one person lives their life or makes choices relating to that life. Where is has it has become oppresive. It is the folly of the law makers which has led us to a place where people like you advocate banning and ordering people what they can and can't wear. They make stupid laws and exacerbate the problem by making further stupid laws to try to address their own stupidity. The Niqab or any other form of dress isn't the problem. It is the attitude of the people behind it.

Stop importing people with barbaric attitudes and people will once again be free to wear, think and act how they like as long as they don't oppress somebody else.

May be the chill that autumn brings
May be a hundred different things
Within the measure of a day

She may be the beauty or the beast
May be the famine or the feast
May turn each day into a heaven
Or a hell

She may be the mirror of my dream
A smile reflected in a stream
She may not be what she may seem
Inside her shell

She who always seems so happy in a crowd
Whose eyes can be so private and so proud
No one's allowed to see them
When they cry
She may be the love that cannot hope to last
May come to me from shadows of the past
That I remember til
The day I die

She may be the reason I survive
The why and wherefore I'm alive
The one I'll care for through the

I'll refer to our troubles again. I had mates that were involved but would never have gave information away on them even if I hated what they done. Tacitly they had my support even if I wasn't directly involved.

It's the same as Islam. I would say that the vast majority of Muslims hate what ISIS stand for but deep down they agree with them. Changing a mindset is almost impossible but we have to try. That's the only way I can see things changing. That's why ISIS and groups like them attack schools and universities as education is their biggest threat. Changing a kids mind is a lot easier than an adult's.

Brits move abroad especially to Spain yet few bother to learn the language expecting the natives of that country to understand them instead.

Brits do not tend to incite hatred, parade their religious differences and burn flags in angry demonstrations never mind plot bombing outrages on civilians in shopping centres. They are usually self sufficient, not relying on state benefits and disagreeing with hwole swathes of the host country's values and assumea live and let live approach, rather like hindus, buddhists and most other religions bar one.

Your trying to draw comparison between British living in another part of the EU and Asian immigration. But I think you will find that the British living in Spain have taken their money with them and have greatly improved the local Spanish economy, remember what Spain was like in the 60s and 70s. Also the British haven't bombed the Spanish and manipulated the Spanish legal system in order to advance British intrests and culture, and the Spanish don't self hate themselves in order to brown nose the British.

My background was 4 years in an Approved school and when I left nobody would give me a job so I started my own business with no help from the Government or the banks only very hard graft on my part much the same as immigrants faced when they started their business no doubt. Sorry about the delay Daffodil and my response to your confusion but I've been watching the rugby.

I didn't see any rallies against the bombing of mainland Britain during the "troubles" or to be precise terrorism. Because that's what it was,out and out terrorism and blind murder.

First example of your confusion. The IRA and associated groups were many things but they were clear about their ultimate goal of a united Ireland and what they would do to achieve that. Even so they were generally also clear about their tactics which involved terror of the British but no real desire to harm British civilians in general which on the rare occasions where there was a mistake proved counter productive eg Warrington. They sought confusion and terror with philosophy and policy change as their goal. Conflating them and their goals with those of the Islamists is disingenuous and frankly naive.

When a white man commits rape his ethnicity or religious beliefs don't get a mention.

Often agreed but then in general the political, social and law enforcement agencies haven't conspired in the name of community cohesion to subvert justice and sweep these crimes under the carpet. I've lost count of the number of people who fail to grasp that this is the real scandal. If you haven't read reports such as that into Rotherham I recommend you do so. Respect for the law and equity in its application is a corner stone of how the British see themselves.

We want Muslim women to learn English? but the large majority of our Politicians can't speak a 2nd language including Cameron and co who had an excellent education via Eton and Oxford etc.

Muslims have been here in large numbers for over a half century. Few cared about this issue for most of that time. It has become an issue for two main reasons. One is the belief that failure to integrate is helping to drive radicalisation. Few care about other minority groups not learning the language because there isn't a significant number within them challenging and subverting British values. The second is that a disproportionate number are at the same time sucking on the welfare teat and refusing to engage. Plenty of groups aren't so good at integrating like some of the Chinese and indeed much longer standing groups like Orthodox Jews but they just happen to be far more self sufficient. Very similar to how Brits tend to operate in Spain. They are a significant net boom to the places they go. And of course they don't have a significant minority within them intending to subvert and overthrow the established order in those countries.

I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me about British values and this so called Christian country we live in, after all most Christians don't even know where there local church is or the name of it.

British values? Plenty. Tolerance and support for those seeking to get on. Adherence to the rule of law. Fairness and equity in dealing with others generally. Practicality and a realistic fudge where difficulties present themselves with religion being a good example. Many people at the same time associate themselves broadly with things like CofE but practice a form almost of secularist religion which with certain exceptions is benign in nature. Reformation and centuries of realism and compromise have arrived at this. Islam does not have this and consequently the radicals often seem to drive the agenda. Most "Christians" not knowing where their church is or who their vicar is will be a prime example of this "soft" Christianity.

Let me know if you're still confused. It can take time but I do enlighten most people like you suffering delusions.

Sadly more confusion. Yes we are incredibly fortunate that our language is almost a world language with many people falling over themselves seeking to learn it as a second language and it would indeed be great if more of us were committed to extending our horizons. The point being that when in Rome. If you want as you suggest to thrive in a foreign environment, even opening your own business, then in order to interract with others you may need the language. Cameron is our Prime Minister and doesn't. Him being fluent in other languages would be useful but not imperative. There is no relation to people who want to live, work and integrate into this country from within.

I don't understand most of the rest of your post Daffodil. Feel free to resubmit it when the effects of whatever you consume have worn off but I got the last part. One thing I do know is my history and I can answer that point in several ways. Firstly, there is no evidence of such widespread signs as you allege at that time. There may have been isolated ones which have been magnified in peoples imaginations for their own ends and continue to this day. So my view is that part of your assertion is unfounded.

Even so you need to check what tolerance actually means. It doesn't mean being compelled to do something against your will. It means, for example in this instance, accepting the fact without any manifesto commitments successive governments, against the majority view, decided to change the make up of the country and said country broadly going along with it without major social unrest. Thatwas tolerance and can be contrasted with what was happening at the time in America.

British values then.

That’s got me thinking.

Plenty of the clichés you’ll hear when asked what British Values are – fair play, honesty, support for the underdog – are either out of date (those first two shot to pieces by corrupt politicians and lying newspapers ) or are not intrinsically British.

But a sense of humour, my God we’re the world leaders! Most of the people I know or ever come into contact with have got a Ph.D in wind-ups. It’s our stock response for good times, bad times and all times in between. Of course, plenty of this is based on offensiveness, being offensive and taking the mickey out of the easily offended, which is why those without this core British value are so keen to try to legislate our humour away.

No one can be offended by monochrome except those who long for colour and whilst I loathe the phrase ‘political correctness’ (usually invoked by bigots  hiding behind the freedom of speech argument instead of defending it), those who take umbrage at humour they don’t like, can just go die as far as I’m concerned . These are the people who hold anti-British values. These easily offendeds. These who have a template of acceptability in their heads, not based on what makes them laugh but on what people think of them if they do laugh. These are the people who want to legislate away anything that makes us alive and happy and vibrant and different.

I’d rather eat my left nut than watch a Bernard Manning DVD. Ditto Tommy Cooper, ditto Charlie Chaplin, ditto Sarah Milican, ditto The League of Gentlemen, ditto plenty of others. That’s taste (good or bad, that’s up to you).  But if you are offended by these people get your own jokes. Get some retaliation in first. Take the p1ss out of them. Laugh at them – that’s the British way.

You might even enjoy yourself.

Nope. You're still not making sense Daffodil. Extraordinary claims require a significant degree of evidence. Presenting alleged isolated incidents as evidence to condemn 60 million is farcical. Especially when placed against events at the time in countries like America. I'm not sure hanging, mutilating, murdering, segregating et al quite compares to the odd harrumph.

Toleration isn't an absolute though is it?

We're more tolerant - and you can decide whether that's through social enlightenment, inherited 'British Values' or our intolerance being legislated away - than plenty of countries like, say, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Uganda, Eastern Bloc countries. Probably not as tolerant as The Netherlands, Sweden (though from my reading, that is changing), Canada.

Which kind of makes it interesting when a tolerated minority want to change the very liberal, tolerant values that welcomed them here in the first place.

Daffodil it is always a mistake for a country to try to appear to be nice. Other countries are not impressed and people inclined to take advantage.

I take the point your trying to make, but then that country needs to change it's values? and stop living in the past. Yes I remember the days when you could leave your front door open or you gave up your seat to an elderly person on the bus or PC Bloggs slapped you around the ear for being a cheeky ****, but those days are long gone, yet folk still......

Roger, Of course tolerance isn't an absolute and neither is having a sense of humour (although reading some of Eternaloptomists replies you need one) but again I hear of this welcoming tolerant society that does not exist albeit by a few.

But it does though, to the extent I outlined!

Yes you will have minority hotheads like the NF, BNP etc - but their support magically disappears when the electorate is confronted with a ballot card. You may get disgruntled talk about Muzzies and Poles, but put on Live Aid or Comic Releif or even a local coffee morning and the innate goodness and yes tolerance of the British public shines through.

Most people I hope (I know I am) have a prejudice based on performance. If your loud, arrogant, bad-mannered, bone-idle, think the world owes you a living, then I have a problem with you. After that I don't care what colour you are, where you're from or where you stick it.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this.

Yes Roger but at least you put up a sensible argument along with lfc1971.

Bloody hell Daffodil!

You do realise that intelligent, polite debate, not wanting to smash your opponent into tiny pieces and calling him / her a luvvie / liberal/ Guardian reader / Daily Mail reader / Hitler, will get you drummed out of the Chit-Chat Stormtrooper Sect.

I hope you can live with the consequences.

Daffodil

As for for the signs you never saw they were in abundance as were the house signs selling to white's only but of course in your world none of this happened.

Please stop lying and misrepresenting my views which are clear. I didn't say there weren't isolated incidents. I said you cannot extrapolate from isolated incidents that the British are intolerant. Certainly if such signs were in abundance as you allege there would be ample independent documented evidence. So where is it? BBC? Parliament through Hansard? Newspapers of the time? Or just in your mind?

You have already shown yourself up with your remark about the IRA not being interested in bombing innocent civilians and if they did it was all a mistake, continue to live in cloud cuckoo land.

More misrepresentations. I said, Even so they were generally also clear about their tactics which involved terror of the British but no real desire to harm British civilians in general which on the rare occasions where there was a mistake proved counter productive eg Warrington.

As I pointed out there were occasions where this wasn't adhered to and it was counter productive. If you can provide me with examples where groups like ISIL phone in warnings to minimise civilian casualties of course I'll give your views more respect. You won't because you can't.

I didn't say they were all in your mind. I asked you for evidence of their widespread use. You haven't provided any. If you have any evidence to provide from a book I'd be more than happy to read it. In the meantime this from The Guardian seems an eminently sensible request:

A plea to Guardian readers. If No Irish signs were as common as is asserted, there should be plenty of them remaining in private collections, local archives and the like. Twenty years ago I tried without success to find one and had to fake one for a book cover. Can we please see some?

If you have any of these signs you may be able to help the good Professor.

Eternaloptimist, these signs were common place, they were hand written and I doubt if folk kept them, why would they? most B&B's had them along with lodging houses (not all I grant you) I have no reason to lie about it.

The ira didn't always give warnings,it was later on when support was waning and when they did, secondary devices were placed to injure or kill those going to help,ie; police or army, why then target civilians in the first place? and of course mistaking a school bus for an army vehicle is an easy mistake to make.

I'm sorry but before we go further I need to clarify just how much of an idiot you are. Why when I repeat a comment about what the IRA generally did do you reply with an obvious statement that the IRA didn't always give warnings? Are you capable of passing the mental capacity to post test? I've been quite explicit about the IRA's general attitude. Of course this wasn't always adhered to but it was a general policy.

Do you understand now or shall I explain it more simply for you?

I'm not saying you are lying. You along with many other people may be the victims of false memories. You may have seen a small number and conflated them into a greater number. You may be completely accurate. I don't know. My point which remains is that if they were as widespread as you allege surely there would have been television porgrammes, newspaper reports or discussions in Parliament about such behaviour at the time? I can find no evidence of any of this. So where is that corroborative evidence?
Report DAFFODIL1 • February 9, 2016 7:01 PM GMT
Eternaloptimist, you used the wording "rare occasions" which is patently wrong, that's the point I was making! innocent people were not killed on "rare occasions"
Report DAFFODIL1 • February 9, 2016 7:07 PM GMT
And as for "false memories" I traveled and lived at the time in Birmingham,Leeds,London to name just a few places, and in all of these cities I was turned away from lodging houses,B&B's because of my accent with these signs in abundance and I stand by that statement.
Report Eeternaloptimist • February 9, 2016 7:29 PM GMT
British civilians were indeed killed on rare occasions as I pointed out earlier Daffodil. I'm not sure how you can deny that. In decades of the troubles there was a fraction of the number killed in just the one attack on 9/11.

And yet there is no actual evidence.

Are we at cross purposes? I have never denied that, that has been my argument,it was not rare occasions!Baltic bombing,Warrington,Birmingham x 2, Harrods,Bishopgates,BBC Headquarters, although the real IRA were thought to be responsible

With the exception of Birmingham all those bombings were aimed, as I said in my earliest comments, at spreading terror rather than seeking to kill. If murder was their intention then they wouldn't have sent coded messages alerting the authorities.
