What a film!

Outstanding from start to finish, and what a horrible eye opener.

If this doesn't win the Oscar, it will be more of a scandal than the race row. See it if you can, it's brilliant.

Saw it last week - good film, wouldn't go overboard about it though

mind you, I saw Joy tonight and that was one of the worst films I have seen in years - in comparison, Spotlight was magnificent

The other oscar fave is the Revenant. I found that a very dragging film. I personally thought Bridge of Spies was better than the Revenant.

Bridge of Spies is a good film.
Report treble • February 5, 2016 10:59 PM GMT
Yep, I thought Mark Rylance, who played the spy, was excellent. Being British, he's probably going to win the bafta for best supporting actor and is 2nd fav for an oscar, same category.

I had read about the incident and thought worth a watch. I enjoyed it. Tom Hanks is their darling, so he must be in the running.

Anybody seen The Revenant? Any good?

Hatefull 8 I gave up on after 40 minutes.

Revenant is OK, but I felt it dragged. First 30 minutes or so, great, then dragged.

I'm waiting for a decent torrent of The Room. My mates a right bloke's bloke, but he said it had him in tears in a nice way.

Watched 'Spotlight' last night - absolutely brilliant with a varied cast all on top form
The plot even though a true story is gripping. Wonderful characters

Just sat through 'The Revenant' tonight
Entertaining but way over-hyped.
Hard to root for any of the characters even Di Caprio, there's little in the way of plot
and even though some scenery is spectacular, there's some laughable CGI scenes with animals
Quite disappointed after so many rave reviews

Viewing 'Room', 'Brooklyn' and 'BofSpies' over the next week.

Agree about both films you've mentioned. Bridge of spies is really good. Will be doing Room and Brroklyn myself over the next few days, and The Martian and Carol.

'Bridge Of Spies' tonight

Not as good as 'Spotlight', but better than 'The Revenant' just

Spielberg / Hanks present to you an American hero you've never heard of,
but here's 2 hours why he (and our country) are so great.
Report themightymac • February 7, 2016 12:30 AM GMT
Educated folk, like myself Crazy have certainly heard of Gary Powers. Knowing the true story actually makes it better viewing. However, you are quite correct regards Hanks and films about American heroes, fact or fiction. That's how he has won so many awards. Yanks love to blow their own trumpet and tell us how great they are. Speaking of that, here is one American great who could certainly blow his own trumpet Laugh

Just come out of a coma after watching The Revenant. Haven't seen Spotlight yet, hope to see it this week.

Bridge Of Spies was a very good film. Carol was a beautiful film, visually stunning, bit of a slow moving first-half but builds up to a very emotional second-half. Very powerful performance by Cate Blanchett, but Rooney Mara matches her all the way, would be a bit unfair if only one of them gets an oscar. 2 really powerful performances. It is a lesbian love story, so might not interest everybody.

....also, about 25 mins of ads and trailers before a film is too much !

Saw Spotlight last night after seeing this thread. Hadn't heard of it before.
Really enjoyed it. Great cast, good acting and compelling & thought-provoking subject matter. Was reflecting after that it might just about be the biggest institutional cover-up / scandal in modern world history.  A vile rotten system that has a billion brainwashed disciples all happy to turn a blind eye to the most appalling systematic abuse.

Wonder if they'll do Spotlight 2 about our friends in Cologne & Sweden???

TheMightyMac

I was referring to James B Donovan as the unknown American hero.

Gary Powers' character is rightly about 7th on the bill,
he's a bit-part player

My favourites in 'Spotlight' were Liev Schrieber (the new editor in chief)
and Stanley Tucci (the weary, but good-hearted lawyer)

Scenes between Tucci and Ruffalo were magical

Sublime supporting performances

Not seen Spotlight yet but looking forward to it. The Revenant was very average. Seems amazing to me that it's in the running for best film and that Leonardo appears a certainty for best actor. For me his performance has been miles better in a whole host of films. I guess he's getting the Oscar for a few near misses in the past.
The Danish Girl and Carol are both very good films. For me Alicia Vikander in the Danish Girl was outstanding though unfortunately she didn't get a best actress nomination.

Seen SPOTLIGHT, very, very good film. Compelling and brilliant acting. If you liked All The President's Men you should like this, but just thought President's Men was slightly the better film.

"Spotlight,  What a film!

Outstanding from start to finish"

Totally agree, gripping film all the way through. Very emotional, and the scale of it and the numbers of victims uncovered in the end was staggering ! The reporters were aware they had a big story, but never aware of how big until the end when it was just overwhelming the number of victims that came forward.

The acting and directing was all brilliant, but not just the big name cast, the victims, all the acting was superb. A very dark story but very well made. Not sure if it is the right film for Best Picture Oscar but it deserves to be, from the major players that I have seen this was the Best Film for me.

Any trailers I've seen for Spotlight just remind me of All the Presidents Men and has put me off watching it.
Not sure I could get the comparisons out of my head and enjoy it.

"....remind me of All the Presidents Men.....

Pretty sure you will. Both films are excellent journalist dramas and absorbing stories, but that is the only comparison.

I really enjoyed All The Presidents Men and have watched it several times over the years and again recently. But Spotlight is very emotional and deeply moving. It is a very powerful film dealing with a grim subject. Investigative journalism is the only thing that is the same about both films, and Spotlight is a terrific film, the journalistic process here is also a very gripping story about the power of the press. Think you should see it, it's one of those films that keep you riveted to the screen.

Thanks HD2 I'll give it a go. I don't watch many films and very little tv but ATPM, like you, I've watched more than once. Great film.

To answer Dannos question a very emphatic No.

Its the paradox of our era that liberals hate religion but have this soft spot for Islam.
Ben Afleck a staunch defender of Islam.

Its naked fear that makes anything about Islam off limits.
I think you can't mention it but they all know what happened Theo Van Gogh.

^ Just when it looked certain that The Revenant was going to run away with Best Picture, it was a weak fav really. Way over-hyped, lot of people didn't rate it and didn't like the film, I personally hated it although it did have it's moments. But after Birdman won last year I never thought that would ever win Best Picture. You just don't know sometimes with these awards and the way it goes.

Spotlight was a brillant film and deserved to win. But all the buzz was for Revenant.

Cary Grant never won an oscar, and Marilyn Monroe was never even nominated for an award.
