yes - in most sports it would be unfair to have both the  gals and guys participating together - the possible exception is horseracing - but even then there's just a handful of top female jockeys- which itself proves the point

So lets choose a sport - any sport- where there is a level playing field

I know- Darts

watched in fascination whilst 2 girl bruisers slugged out 33-36 dart legs missing doubles after doubles/ busting time and again .....

and wimbledon tennis- the girls get paid as much as the men when the best wouldnt make the last 32 in a men's top tourney- and they play / entertain for 3 sets max - not 5

Its about time we put women back in the kitchen- if they cannot play to a decent standard.

why put up with such substandard performances-?
With one exception: Female beach volleyball - just about the most exhausting sport known to man.
After 30 minutes watching I'm absolutely shattered

cheers allCool

I think maybe it's the time women spend in the kitchen, bringing up kids and generally running the show, that means blokes can devote their whole lives to something so essentially trivial as being good at sport Grin.

Got to disagree

The big female tennis players (Sharapova/Williams etc) generate more revenue than the men outside the top 4. Women buy cars and sportswear as well
Report Crisp77 • January 8, 2016 2:25 PM GMT
Most women's sports probably make a decent amount of money from the You've Been Framed £250

Report Ramruma • January 8, 2016 2:36 PM GMT
Underpaid or overpaid? As @Zazu says, it is not about performance but bums on seats. Money goes to the sports that sell most tickets and satellite TV subs. If people want to watch men driving fast cars and women playing tennis, that's showbusiness.

Quite happy to have separate fortnights at Wimbledon for Mens and Womens tennis.

Compare TV revenue and ticket sales for each and divvy it up as prize money.

Will take a wild stab and suggest the Women wouldn't be getting the same as the men under that regime.
Report rogerthebutler • January 8, 2016 3:16 PM GMT
But why stop there?

Charlie Magri and Johnny Owen couldn't take on Muhammad Ali, so let's get rid of the weight divisions in boxing.

Mo Farah can't run as fast as Usain Bolt in mph terms, so lets do away with any athletic event over 100 metres (field events aren't proper sports I mean hop step and jump and tossing an orb about??!)

In fact lets just have a men's 50 metres, restricted to steroid-amped freaks who can hit 45 mph at least.

Cricket? 20/20 or nothing, with plans to phase in 10 / 10 by 2020 (see what I did there?)

Just reduce sport down to pure, distilled, easily-digestible, emollient fare that can be over and done in as little time as possible allowing us to go and get on with our oh-so busy social media fixations or d1cking about on our mobile phones.

According to Forbes Serena Williams earned $24.6 Million in 2015 and Sharapova $29.7 M.......same source has Andy Murray earning  $22.3 M

I reckon Ronda Rousey earns as much as any male UFC star as well.

Women buy stuff

Both would sell out. As for TV rights, America is the big market and if you can think of an American man likely to win Wimbledon, let us know. Meanwhile, the US networks will be all over Serena Williams.

I find the OTT attempt to push womens' sports quite patronising to.... women. It's not the same. It's inferior and often quite naff. If the media pushed over 40s mens' sport it would be embarrassing, yet we could wipe the floor against womens' cricket, footy and rugby.

Girls enjoy sports but few will continue to play team sports in their late 20s and beyond for obvious reasons. Their priorities change.

You see girls play footy, cricket etc (largely due to this media push), but rarely if ever see older women play. My local cricket club has girls' teams but the womens' team packed up a few years ago...

This attempt to suggest the sexes are the same is ignorance. Our differences is what makes society strong.

Zazu - That Shara earned more than Williams or Muzza (and that most of the best paid female athletes are good looking) suggests it is not about how good, or entertaining you are it is all about what you look like.

Hardly an endorsement for cause of the feminism or equality.

Most people seem to agree with me on this thread for a change

To say women are the equal of men in sport is strange meaning of the word equality because that they are not and never will be

Still far be it for me to stop it, I object to the word to the word discrimination though

Most of them do want to play sports themselves, they are into things like babies, husbands a nice house etc
Report ebulGery • January 8, 2016 6:53 PM GMT
If a women seems the equal of a man I would acknowledge it, but when women are not they should acknowledge it, but they don't

they make false claims of discrimination all the time to explain their inferiority.
Report rogerthebutler • January 8, 2016 6:58 PM GMT
What are we talking about here?

Women playing sports?

Women and men playing sports?

Women and men playing the same sport at the same time?

Women watching sport?

Men watching women play sport?

Remuneration of women and men who play the same sport?

Over 30 (age and stones) women playing sport?

An opportunity to g0b off about women playing sports when they should be making you a sandwich?

What?
Report Darlo Bantam • January 8, 2016 7:00 PM GMT
In terms of the OP, the darts prize fund for men is 10x that of the women.

In the current day though, prestige, media exposure and prize money will nigh-on be only be determined by market forces. Albeit there are some events where women can piggy back off men.

that is the best role for women Roger, you got the ideaLaugh

Everybody has a choice Roger men and women. My observations is that women are not really into sport are they?

People say we should encourage them into sport, why??????????, it is a men thing we should encourage men to do it not women

That is stupid and very inefficient, Nobody stops them in this country if they want.

It is false claims of discrimination in this and other areas that is harming Western societies and the World.

Leave women in their traditional role, stop listening to old boots, feminists and women who hit on other women.
Report Injera • January 8, 2016 7:32 PM GMT
Roger, it's not about 'gobbing off' as you so eloquently put it..

It's about having a debate about the true nature of womens' participation in sport.

There's a campaign for 'equality' so there must be an intelligent debate with equal scrutiny.

Grand Slam tennis is embarrassing with its equal pay for 2 completely different events; one over 3 sets and one over 5.

Locally we have girls' footy and cricket. The girls love it but there are no women playing. Why? Because once girls get to a certain age their priorities change. That's a good thing, not a negative one.

The obsession to turn women into men is appalling.

As the feminist Steinhem infamously said of her gender: 'we are becoming the men we wanted to marry'. Yuk..
Report rogerthebutler • January 8, 2016 7:55 PM GMT
Oh come on lighten up!

I was merely responding in the manner initiated by the OP and then carried on by mobo and myself earlier on in this 'debate' as you see fit to call it.

As a father two daughters that have represented Great Britain in international sport, one of whom is a current World and Paralympic champion, I'm just watching this with bemused detachment

What is hilarious here is that the original post was tongue in cheek, and we now have "hundreds and thousands" explaining why the sexes are not equal in sporting terms. You couldn't make it up.
