He swam 100m freestyle in 1:53 in 2000 at Sydney.  To put that into perspective I can swim it quicker than that and I am not very quick.  The world record is about 48s, 1:53 is slower than the 200m record I think.  Now the interesting bit.  By 2004 He had got his 100m time down to below 57s!  Wtf.  Didnt manage to compete in Athens because of a visa bungle.  Turns out he may have had some talent but training in a lake is clearly not ideal preparation.  Might do a little bit more research.
Pause • Switch to Standard View Eric the Eel, interesting fact.

Think he got his time down by swimming in shark infested sea water.

Can the Crafty Cockney swim 100m in under 2 minutes? I don't think so.

In at number 7, unless he too some day gets to become the face of continental lager, or lives with Hattie Jaques.

does Erik the Viking count? What with him spelling it with a K and that?

He was more popular as "Eric The Eagle"!

“When Alexander of Macedonia was 33, he cried salt tears because there were no more worlds to conquer..... Bristow's only 27.”

When Sykes, or even l'Eric, have quotes about them like that, then I'll be ready to concede they're top 5. Until then, I know some of the top 3 have their knockers, but I'm happy to see Bristow inserted at 4.

Alexander the Great did not conquer India, his soldiers did not like
fighting an army that had elephants.

Seriously impressive. 1.53 is incredibly easy for anybody who swims but 57 is seriously quick. We have very good swimmers at the tri club who are a fair way off that sort of time so good on him.
