My computers only 3 years old, but seems to be getting slower by the month.
I use ccleaner, registry cleaners, avast professional, Malwarebytes  etc but doesn't seem to make much difference.
It also seems to be worse since I changed to Windows 10, so I followed the
"5 ways to speed up windows 10 type you tube thing".
After following its instructions pressing Start-Control Panel-Configs etc, the thing I need to press last doesn't seem
to appear on my list, although it will be shown on the you tube screen list.

I then go on to a forum and someone will say its because I should go into advanced and untick the
"unbanded hertz corrector" or something just as geeky.
I untick this, and then a message appears "do you want to proceed with this? It might make your computer blow up, or give you herpes "
Its normally at this point I give up.

Any tips or links?

I thought I would have a bash at 'Windows 10' a few weeks ago.

It was far too alien for me to step onto, as I can't spend time trying to get to grips with it, as I am not a "recreational" user!

I get the invite pretty much every day and say no, but today, despite saying 'later', it still started to download and took a few clicks to stop it!

When I binned it last time I got the usual caring message asking what was the problem, but responding was a waste of time!

I hate computers, as it seems that every time one changes anything there is a problem ahead, and faced with the options as per the OP here,
how does one know what to click on?

Just a thought. If you've lots of  e.mails you've been procrastinating about deleting, do it.  Often seems to speed things up here when I do that. No guarantees mind..

It could be that your computer needs a clean of its hardware of dust, ie the fan and air vents.

your first job is to open task manager. (taskmgr.exe)

(which i hope still exists in windows 10).

make sure that you select the "Show processes from all users"

then click on the performance tab.

high cpu usage and high virtual memory usage are usually what causes a computer to run slowly. you need to see if you're experiencing either of these and if you are, you need to pick out the culprits.

Delete anti virus software, you don't need it, at least don't have it running.

Get a Solid State Drive, Black Friday tomorrow, sometimes they appear in Amazon flash sales, I got another this morning, A sandisk 480GB for £80.

Windows 10 sends lots of data about you and your PC to MS, go through the privacy settings thoroughly and turn as much off as much you can.

Delete any software you don't use.

In CCleaner go to Tools > Startup, turn off as much as you can so that things aren't running in the background/loading files.  I have a list of about 40 things, only 4 are run at startup.

Use the registry cleaner in CCleaner.

I'm not a big fan of these cleaning programs BUT I would recommend Wisecare 365, there is a free version, and it does a very good job, more thorough than CCleaner.

All else fails, do a clean install, or upgrade your hardware.

Ta, CCleaner has been a bit naff for me recently. Used to get rid of 300mb+ of junk each week, now I'm lucky if it does 30mb.
