Sheep left cut and bleeding after being roughly sheared, their painful, gaping wounds crudely stitched up by shearers.
Lambs with their tails and parts of their ears cut off – without painkillers.
Sheep hit in the face with electric clippers, slammed to the floor and kicked and stamped on.
This is just some of what was revealed during a recent PETA US exposé of a wool-producing farm in Argentina. These horrors are similar to those previously documented in shearing sheds in Australia and the US, showing – yet again – that wool is the product of a cruel business.
Will you speak out against the abuse of lambs, sheep and all other animals by making a generous donation to PETA today?
Sheep are intelligent, complex, sensitive animals. As a prey species, they are easily frightened and should be approached and handled gently. But as revealed in footage by PETA affiliates, that's not how they're typically treated in the wool industry.
The PETA US exposé comes soon after the release of footage showing abuse at farms in the Ovis 21 network, a supplier of clothing giant Patagonia. A tremendous outcry from caring people around the world helped prompt Patagonia to announce that it was dropping Ovis 21 as a supplier, as well as pledging that the company wouldn't buy wool again until it could be assured of "the humane treatment of animals". Those moves – along with the company's promotion of new animal-friendly polyester fleece – are good initial steps, but as Patagonia delves deeper into the wool supply chain, it will surely find that cruelty will always be a part of wool production.
From wool-producing farms in Argentina to shearing sheds in Australia and the US, PETA's international affiliates have again and again exposed terrible abuse of sheep throughout the wool industry.
You may recall a previous video exposé by PETA US that revealed cruelty in all 19 Australian shearing sheds which the investigators visited. That case documented that dozens of workers employed by shearing contractors abused sheep in Victoria and New South Wales – Australia's top wool-producing states – as well as South Australia. These workers may shear a total of more than 4 million sheep every year.
Please stand up to such abuse by donating online to support PETA's work for sheep and other animals.
