Adele is said to be one of the few superstars who has enough influence to decide how she wants people to listen to her music.
Martin Talbot is from the Official Charts Company and told Newsbeat: "Her fans range from children to aunts and uncles. Not only does she have fans who will go out and buy the record for themselves, there's a huge potential for gift purchase as well."

Basically, he means people with sh!t taste.

Exactly, 626, although you'd probably recognise the Someone Like You dirge if you heard it. Sh!t like this sells by the truckload - Dido sold 21 million copies of her first album, Adele's 2nd is the biggest selling album this century with over 30M. Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Alanis Morrissette, and even the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack all make the top 20 best selling albums in history. People love bland.

You might think this ridiculous but, genuinely, I wouldn't know Adele or any songs despite my daughter raving about her!

Now, as she is the topic I took another look, and she was singing something I heard before, but which still didn't do it for me.

watched and listened to a few of her songs on YouTube.

My conclusions:

1. Needs to lose a few pounds

2. Might sound better when her sore throat gets better

3. Somebody should tell her shouting is not singing

Underwhelming IMO ... the Sven Goran Erikson of music, i.e. completely and unwarrantedly overrated.

I nearly said she makes Lenny Henry seem good at what he does, but she's really not THAT bad.

You seem a discerning sort Diva but as Sonka says the best songs tend to come from troubled souls and for me Adele is at her best and most soulful when she's pouring her heart out. Mona Lisa may have looked a bit miserable but then......

If you want something a little more upbeat there are a good few with Hometown Glory and One And Only springing to mind. She also did a wonderful cover of an old Bob Dylan song Make You Feel My Love and she did a howitzer of a release song Set Fire To The Rain on her last album.

There's plenty of room for both Mikael. There's nothing bland about Adele. She's just different to PJ who is a fine artist in her own right. I remember a mate of mine took me to see Harvey in concert before she made it big and she was underwhelming.

Sure Adele is gutted at being called fat, a bad singer and bland by the super sexy, multi talented BF forumites.

She is natural, has a great voice and is down to earth. Whether you are a fan or not I think her voice lends itself to the heartfelt numbers she belts out. Cannot see it fitting 'I've got a brand new combine harvester' or 'Agadoo.'

Indeed bigmo but, as I said in my post, it was an Adele fan who described her new album as 'garbage.' I've never listened to any of her albums. I already knew they were garbage!

Tbh, I'm kinda glad that Polly Harvey can only shift 250k copies of a masterpiece, while stuff I consider to be junk sells in the tens of millions. Nowt like a bit of cultural snobbery!
Report Mikael D'Haguenet • November 23, 2015 4:29 PM GMT
I dispute the 'rare talent' part btw. I've provided names of several 'artists' who churn out middle-of-the-road stuff that gets lapped up by the masses. It's fairly well established that we're a bunch of middle-aged white blokes on here. Most don't bother listening to new music at all, and haven't for years. They do occasionally hear something from the mainstream and latch on to it though.

I'm sure we could cite plenty of fans of any musician who would complain that an album is shiite. Even the great PJ Harvey. I don't subscribe to lfc's view. I remain convinced that such things are subjective and my subjective view is that in my lifetime I can think of four truly great female interpreters of popular music from this country. Two of those I'd class as power singers being Bassey and Winehouse and two who were singers who elicited emotion or what some people call soulful singers. These were Springfield and now Adele. That's how highly I rate her. A measure of which is that she's often better live than on record.
Report bigmo • November 23, 2015 5:51 PM GMT
We'll just go round in circles debating this.I guess We all get a little precious if we rate something and others label it trash.I'm sure you would feel the same if I labeled your favourite artist as trash.

Adele is just one of many wide ranging artists I enjoy listening to.I think it's unfair to label her work as trash though as some posters are.
Report lfc1971 • November 23, 2015 6:23 PM GMT
Let me explain why a work of art/music and its value must exist outside and above peoples opinions. It is simple an exercise in logic.

Have you ever(most people have but not all) listened to a piece of music say at age 13 and thought it terrible or it just had no effect on you. A nd then, perhaps a year later you play again the same piece of music and something starts to happen, you play it a few more times and it hits you like you have discovered something beautiful. And you have.

Now what has changed, it is the same piece of music which is now a masterpiece. It hasn`t changed, you have....this is why it is the music that exists and its beauty independent of people and you may or may not find it.
Report Clouseau • November 23, 2015 7:01 PM GMT
